It is just sad that the people whom are elected to represent their so-called people are living like demi-gods in the country with no interest in helping their constituency or the country as a whole. We keep haggling and insulting each other over the Presidential candidates and ignore these kind of politicians who go under the radar in this country siphoning public funds.
Re: National Assembly Severance Package To Gulp N2.8bn by Olaone1: 5:12pm On Feb 19, 2015
Yet, there are APC members there. Have APC members there ever protested this obscene package? Whether at state/federal level? No! They are always coy about it.

Change ko....change ni. Nothing will change. Y'all will be shocked.

I know the NL partisan crowd will not comment on this thread since it doesn't talk specifically about Jonathan or Buhari or about PDP and APC. Apparently BOTH parties are perfectly satisfied with the status quo. Yet our gullible people will line up and take bullets for their "rock star" politicians who don't give a toss about them or their future.
We are a naïve, shallow, credulous people.
The dominant posters in the politics sections are mercenaries, vultures feeding on the carcass of Nigeria's political system. They are less interested in the actual state of governance and more focused on promoting their sponsors.

Seun, we need a function on Nairaland where we can save some posts as "favourites", like we have on Twitter.

None of dem boys (APC e-boys) wants change. It is all about their parochial interest. Whether APC warriors or PDP warriors.

What these politicians get paid as NA members is obscene, yet, APC members are always in tandem with others whenever they want a pay hike. How many pro-people legislative decisions have they initiated as NA members?

It is all about the Benjamins undecided

I say we start an internet movement to reduce the income of a Nigerian senator by at least 90%

They DO NOT deserve to earn as much as they do.

The "official annual salary" or whatever mentioned here is only a tiny fraction of their official income when "allowances" of ridiculous proportions are calculated.

If Nigeria as a nation CAN NOT afford to pay its lowly civil servants minimum wages equal to that of the United States, then they will need to explain exactly why the rules change drastically for so-called "law makers" who only make laws that line their pockets with public funds.

We HAVE to do this NOW, and question these rogues.
Re: National Assembly Severance Package To Gulp N2.8bn by samofson: 5:24pm On Feb 19, 2015
We are busy screaming GEJ this, Buhari that !!! when the real people we should be castigating are our so called lawmakers.

They are the reason we are where we are now. If there were not a bunch of rogues and nonentities they would have stood up to the Executive and we would not be where we are today. Imagine if you went to work for only 78 days in a year... you go still get jobhuh??.

if you check everything that goes on within the Government today, you will find out that there is always one honourable or senator or LGA chairman slowing the down the process of development because either e never see something chop inside or the one wey dem offer am no do

Please lets take our LGA, State House of Assembly, House of Reps and Senate votes very seriously because these are the levels that would prove if our country will ever return to greatness.

Also we all should start pushing for a reduction of the allowances received by these lawmakers in line with the current economic hardship and drop in crude oil prices. Everyone from bottom to top must feel the pinch and that also includes our President (Current or Future)

Its threads like this that shows those who genuinely have the interest of the country at heart or those who are paid to comment on social media...check this thread closely and you will never see those 'popular' monikers here except its a thread bashing either the president or his opponent....like someone said on TV this morning its not the politicians that are the problem but we the people and it is only until we rise up and say enough is enough...you can imagine the salaries of this people and yet most probably never sponsor or head any committee in the house... its a shame really where we are as a nation

Re: National Assembly Severance Package To Gulp N2.8bn by Nobody: 5:55pm On Feb 19, 2015
Meiji:
Ladies and gentlemen, a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria:
When National Mirror sought to know the state of the budget from one of the committee members last two weeks, the senator was short of cursing the correspondent, retorting, “Now I know that you are one of those wishing me to fail so that I would not return back to the senate. You want me to be working on the budget when my colleagues are in the battle field struggling to see how they will win their own elections back to the senate. I wish you are near reach now so that I crack that your coconut head.”
Omg this is freaking hilarious! grin and very disgusting angry at the same darn time!

Like seriously are these the people who are supposed to serve and represent the citizens?!! shocked

My brother!!!

Can you see how few the comments on this thread are? People run away from topics of national interest such as these, but they would feel comfortable in a PDP/GEJ or APC/GMB bashing thread!!!

I say it all the time - we aren't deep thinkers. We are short-sighted, gullible, selfish folks who don't really want to see a better country, but want a better life for themselves ONLY. Concepts such as "societal good" or "national interest" don't make sense to most of us - we're only interested in bigger bank accounts, bigger cars, opulent lifestyles etc. I dare say we don't really hate corruption - that explains why we're quick to point to corruption at the other end of the political divide but stay silent when our favourite politicians are mentioned.

I really don't think we're ready for true development.
Re: National Assembly Severance Package To Gulp N2.8bn by ravgach: 5:58pm On Feb 19, 2015
Now those clamoring for change, who are also members of the National Assembly, will not want anything to change about this one. They are all the same thing. The difference is in what they say!

When the head is rust, the whole of the body will be on fire. What do u expect from these set of looters when they see how the president himself is wallowing in corruption, stealing from every corner. It is the time for Nigerians to wake up cos the destiny of this country is our hands and no matter how powerful these people may look, we gave them the power and we have the right to retrieve it back. We must not continue this way cos the destiny of our children unborn is at stake. Let's rise up and send these people back to where they came from. They have no pity for us so they deserve no mercy. Whatever they bring, collect it and vote them out. Enough is enough, we deserve better than this. Gej should know that the end will justify the mean.
Bro we have to change our constitution too.. it supports theft and corruption.. if not.. we re just on a carousell...

Now you know why I have never believed in the so called CHANGE slogan. Our legislators and local government chairmen who have refused to bring development to the grassroots are our biggest headaches in this country. I cannot take APC seriously until they campaign for a review of these nonsensical allowances

I tell you. I also share this sentiment! The Independence came way to early, plus we weren't prepared and mature enough to engage in the demanding and arduous task of building a nation worthy of standing for decades, if not centuries. Our leaders thought Independence was the same thing as building a great nation through selflessness, visionary leadership, focus and determination.

Politically, we, especially the masses, are not well aware and alive to the massive power we wield. Our lazy looters understand this, and are utilising it fully to their advantage.

It rather sad and depressing that threads like this are very unpopular. Reason is simple: the average Nigerian runs away from threads that demand critical thought, sound arguments, and dispassionate matters. They will rather grace threads that spread violence, division, partisan politics, and celebrities gists.

It's on issue as this one concludes we are not ready for the needed change. All the so called change matter na emotional appeal.

The national assembly is one of the greatest hindrances to our development as a people. Till we watch them bumper to bumper, and occasionally protest against them, we are on a long thing. There's no reason whatsoever what these thieves should earn the jumbo pay they do earn. IIt's an insult to the Nigerian workers!

We need Change!!! But From where?
Re: National Assembly Severance Package To Gulp N2.8bn by Firefire(m): 6:46pm On Feb 19, 2015
God bless the OP,

Nigeria current government setup is too bogus and a complete waste of resources.

Imagine the amount this legislooters will share as severance package when an average Nigerian lives on less than $2 dollars per day.

If the 2.8Bn Nigerian Naira is invested in education or rather shared to the jobless Nigerians, how better will this country be?

I keep asking those castigating Goodluck Jonathan, is Jonathan the only person running the affairs of this country?

Apart from this severance package, the whooping constituency allowance collected by the legislators are unaccounted for and nobody in their constituency is demanding accountability.

What justification do we have for this wastage?

We have painted black white for a long time in this country, it’s time to rise and call spade a spade, enough of wasteful government, enough of rotating leadership position among the same class since 1960.

May God heal Nigeria and give wisdom to those that requires it.

Shalom!

Most of you like defending GEJ without even thinking,
Why didn't GEJ reduce there satanic allowances amidst dwindling revenues like President Yar'ADUA did during the meltdowns resulting in lower oil prices, but because his actually is what you mentioned above.
Re: National Assembly Severance Package To Gulp N2.8bn by Olatad: 7:08pm On Feb 19, 2015
The money received by political office holders in Nigeria is quite outrageous, and all patriotic Nigerians should condemn this.I think there should be total overhauling of the section of our constitutn that states the benefits you enjoy as a politician. Its should be made less attractive so that its only people that are really want to serve will put themselves forward.Politics in this clime has been made so attractive that a pauper of yesterday can become super rich overnight for holding political office.God bless Nigeria
