What does the law say? Do we say we "feel" the law should be put aside for any reason? If yes, then we are saying we want a lawless society! Mopol squads and even conventional police are armed anyway, if its security that's the issue. But most important is - WHAT is the position of the law on this? |

if using military would ensure that everyone who come out to vote are going to return back home in one piece then they should be used but the military should not interfer with the election process |

zimoni:Sarcasm I guess. Ekiti style of things cant work again. We failed them in Osun and will surely do it again in the national level. @OP, are we fighting war? If no, there is no need for soldiers to be delpoyed for election, |

Mass deployment of soldiers is not necessary during elections. 1, As at now ..the nigerian military is largely partisan. Their bais against Buhari and the Ekiti gate scandal is still fresh in our memelories. The govt claimed they used the military to achieve a level playing field during the election, but as we all later found out . the reverse was the case 2, It is unconstitutional to use soldiers for elections. We would be encouraging impunity if we support such trend. 3,The Nigerian Police have many special squad to tackle any civil unrest. Just like the U.S have SWAT, Homeland... for special purposes 4, Soldiers are meant to protect us against external force not against ourselves. That's the work of the police. The police and The Civil Defence are less aggressive, I suppose. All they need is special training if they don't already have that. 5, More soldiers are needed in the insurgency states. its only these areas that the military attention is largely needed in the election. In all, this president promised to uphold our constitution. So does he means he needs to be told whats constitutional and not? In a sane society this wont even be a debate bicos its simply unconditional! |

It would be quite unsettling to hold elections without the armed forces present as some Nigerians have lost all sense of decorum and grown so barbaric. Some Nigerians no longer have any form of scruples. They are not able to place their temperaments in check or act with civility while discussing passionate issues. How would you expect them to conduct themselves properly at the polling booths? The military is civil and know better than to oppress anyone. We have seen them carryout their duties at the polls in Ekiti and Osun maintaining the peace with respect for citizens. I think APC is looking for a chaotic atmosphere to execute some form of mischief that I cannot put my finger on at the moment. They won in Osun with the military on ground and the results and court judgements have been in their favour. They say they are progressives... wouldn't they want citizens to remain alive So why would they not want all our force men to be on ground to ensure this?Regardless of whether the army is constitutionally permitted or not I think they should be deployed for the elections... It is very important that the citizens who are the electorate are alive to be governed and not left to chance to survive or be alive. Looking at the current state of our Police and how unorganised and uncoordinated they could be, it is difficult for people to place their trust in them. Police men were at the booths in 2011 when terrible horrors took place at the booths in the north to both corpers and civilians alike. I hope our President will do what is right and allow the military to be at the polling units nationwide... Thank you. |

Topeakintola:Ochejoseph is under the payroll of Abati. He sold his conscience for peanut and he is so proud of it, i stop reading the jargons he wrote when he said some party are full of violence like PDP is non violence and full of saint. Both APC and PDP are violent party but the biased OP wont agree with you. Pathetic. |

Its an emphatic YES..you guys know what happened post '11 elections, n all the blames heaped on the president, and besides that, important, the bh guys have been issueing threats and election period would be a good time for them to strike..so it shouldnt only be the military but the entire security agencies especially the secret agents..and we all know the govt work base on classified info..talkin'bout security, the president works in tandem with the secret agents, the nsa,the service chiefs and other security agencies,he doesnt, repeat,HE bleeping DOESNT WORK WITH THE APC! Now,those apc executive n honorable rogues and trouble rousers, would they be willing to sign an undertaking to be fully held responsible for any slight violence? |

Rexxie:Oga Ade stop your backward thinking and death wish. Why do we have mobile police and riot police? The securities were compromised in '11 and not doing there job enough by protecting those that were killed in the post election violence. This is a riot, violence and not war. Why on earth cant you differentiate between this? The defence force has division in which each division has a task operation. Violence eruption is the duty of police to stop. That is what they are trained for. Riot is not war. Bringing soldier on board would be equivalent to intimidation and scare tactic. We have enough men in the civil defence. We have enough men in riot police and their task is well defined. You people should stop bending the law for your selfish interest. Soldiers are been compromised and turning to bomboy because of politics. They shouldnt be political escort and taking order from silly civilian. The constititution and court of law do not allow soldiers to be deplyed for election. It is illegal, only those not abiding by the law and have hidden agenda of rigging election would want them deploy otherwise. If there is a riot, police should do the job they are paid for; hence commisioners of the state and IG should be probe for taking failed men into a task. We say no to soldiers, they are meant to fight war and not provide security ( a police job) on election. They are not to be see wondering around but stay in their barrack. |

Of course, the millitary should be deployed. In all my life I've never heard or read where the police successfully managed conflict within the country and neither are they trained to be proactive. Even institutions rarely invite the police to curb voilence. I won't even put it past them to start collecting 20naira from the voters before allowing them to vote. A hashtag for #NoSoldiersNoVote should have been trending now sef. But I would have prefered #NoOnlineVotingNoVote. By the way, do soldiers vote too? |

I think d OP of this thread started on a wrong foot with d opening statements, unless he/she can convince me that he/she is not biased and intends to reach an objective opinion of NLanders,he should explain what he meant by saying "a certain political party is prone to violence" and why he deliberately omitted the Ekitigate saga where d military is presently fingered in committing electoral fraud...... That said...because of d distrust people like me and d opposition parties particularly have,I think d army should be restricted to d troubled region for security during dis election. And my reasons includes d fact that d constitution frowns at d use of d military in elections, and d other regions are not prone to violence during/after elections in recent times and the military has been grossly compromised today...conclusively,I think majority of Nigerians ordinarily do not have problem with d military until d Ekitigate palaver and d attending reaction of d authorities and d presidency. So I say NO to military involvement in our elections for NOW |
| Re: Should Soldiers Be Deployed For The 2015 Elections? by beylinko(m): 10:05am On Feb 20, 2015 |
All things being equal, we shouldn't be deliberating on the deployment of soldiers or not. With the shortcomings and gross incapability that had been the emblem of our police officers, I for one cannot Trust them with the safety of my life. Soldiers are meant to be in the war front and the Barracks. But with the current security challenges n the way the polity is heated on the burner of hatred, ethnicity, self gratification( to mention a few), the country cannot be differentiated from a war zone. Hence, the deployment of soldiers is justified.. |

Yes they should and they must. Those clamouring for non deployment are perfecting plans to rig the elections massively. Was it not the same soldiers used in Edo and they one or is it the Osun own. So what are they scared off? |
| Re: Should Soldiers Be Deployed For The 2015 Elections? by highmood(m): 1:06pm On Feb 20, 2015 |
I want the military to be deployed for the elections. This is because the military is also a stake holder in this election and if situation becomes unmanageable by the policemen, they would still called, so why not use the military to prevent any breakdown of law and order rather than use them to calm unmanageable situations. And for those who think they have phobias for the military, they should sit in thier houses. For me, I feel safe having one military man close to me than a hundred of policemen. I support. The military should be used. |
