ronald4lif:Lmaoo.. I get your point.. I was at the hair dressing saloon today and i met a girl there, a conversation ensued and i got to know she is Nigerian.. Igbo.. Asked her name and she couldnt pronounce her native name quite well, and the way she was speaking her Igbo was annoying to me out of curiousity i asked her for how long has she been out of Nigeria, she wasnt being specific and at the end,she just said about five years.. My face just sagged at the stup1dity the girl displayed.I mean what is wrong with some people ![]() Being proud of where you come from is now something to play dumb for?? The Yorubas receive a bonus mark for this.. They are always upholding their culture!! My name is Adanna and i aint changing it soon ![]() My comment is out of context to what the op asked o.. |

dechandel:Nne thanks for throwing more light on this. You're very correct. I respect the Yoruba tribe any day, they always stick to their culture and very proud of it. In the few cities I have been to in Europe, especially here in London you don't need to ask someone if he's Yoruba, they always speak their language anywhere they are. And even though they have English names you hardly hear them tell it except their Yoruba names. Sadly same can't be said for Igbos. One can hardly identify who is Igbo in a foreign country as many of them no longer speak their language in public. Was in a cousin's place on Christmas day and her daughter 16, born here, her name is Paris, the son Denzel and the last Jackson. So I spoke Igbo to the girl jokingly even though I knew she doesn't understand a word of it and as expected she didn't, then the mom translated and said to her you never learn. In my mind I was like is she serious, take a look at the names you gave these kids and you expect them to pick any interest in Igbo? It's not limited to Igbos abroad or Nigerians abroad. In Nigeria it is same story. You see people dumping their first name and bearing all kinds of laughable English names. The worse hit of late are our celebrities, they all give their kids names that doesn't represent their cultural background by any stretch. Some of them after spending something abroad starts forming foreign accent. Everyday the black man keeps relegating their culture to the background for that of the colonialists and think they are impressing any one. Africans are neck too deep in this ish and it's really sad. Asians never gives up their identity. |

ronald4lif:Denzel,Paris and Jackson.. The next will be chipmunks... Not that there is anything wrong with giving kids an english name,we all do have an english name,as a Christian and a Catholic,i got two sef .But it becomes bad when one totally forgets where he/she is from and embraces a foreign culture that isnt even welcoming. . Fvck being civilized.. Its being silly..Me thinks Nigerians tops up the list when it comes to losing identity ![]() Atleast you can easily identify the "Kwame" anywere, but Naija?? Hell yea, joke is on you ![]() |

dechandel:Yes english names are fine, I have got one as a Christian Catholic. But many think their english names are supposed to be their first names, and that by bearing flashy english names they are being impressive. I wonder to who they are trying to impress. What made me brought this up was the OP making jest of Sanusi's accent, and I wondered why his accent should be a thing of concern when english is borrowed. Maybe it is because some Nigerians now fake British, Canadian or American accent after visiting for weeks on holiday. |

ronald4lif:Off topic. By the way, how many Brazilians, Chinese, Indians or Russians do you know? Are these countries English colonies? |
| Re: Can I Make Her Change Her Accent? by ronald4lif(m): 11:02am On Mar 01, 2015 |
johnjon:I personally know about 6 Indians to be specific. And I am a fan of their movies too, non of their top movie stars bear English names as first. And India is an English colony. Also I don't need to know Brazilians etc in person before knowing they don't bear these names, I see a lot of them in different sport games. I was born and grew up in Cameroon till 16 and they are not as neck deep into this colonial slavery like we Nigerians. Cameroon is a colony of France and a lot of them bear their local names as first. |

ronald4lif:I wasnt making jest of Sanusi's accent. Its just dat I wd have preferred a more neutral accent for a man as educated and exposed as he is. Well, since u sed the language is borrowed. No walala. |

| Re: Can I Make Her Change Her Accent? by LewisO: 11:26am On Mar 01, 2015 |
U don't need to change her accent if her accent is still ok, i have an Igbo lady she's a graduate she's very intelligent, what i mean intelligent, she can speak very well, she even write projects for her colleagues, but u will still get that Igbotic accent through her tongue. No eulogy, i have a natural American accent. But English is a borrowed language. |
| Re: Can I Make Her Change Her Accent? by ronald4lif(m): 11:30am On Mar 01, 2015 |
LewisO:True to that. Her pronounciation should be more of a worry to him than her accent. |
| Re: Can I Make Her Change Her Accent? by rudebouy(op): 11:32am On Mar 01, 2015 |
LewisO:Bros, der is a difference between talking with an igbotic accent and souding like a confirm village girl. |

ronald4lif:i relegated my christian name to third name when i wanted to write my waec,i wanted to use my other two yoruba name coupled with my surname but my school principal advised me against it,that xtian name is the name people knew and addressed me with from childhood.....People now call me by my yoruba name,i now feel like am original and not origifake |

Horllamideh:Lol! Good for you. I don't think is right to have an english name as first. We are not English. Nigeria is made up of Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Ijaw, Kanuri, Kwali, Ikwerre etc etc and our names (first names) should reflect our hereditary, not a borrowed language or heritage. My first name is my Igbo name for that is my identity. If someone ask me my name and I tell them my baptismal name they will be confuse as to where I come from. That is because they know I am not English and my accent suggest I am not too. But if I tell them my Igbo name they may not know where I come from but many times they are pleased to ask what country bears (Chinasa, my name) and I feel glad to tell them, and even explained further the region of Nigeria that bears it and how many ethnic nationalities made up the contraption Nigeria. This I think is how it should be. If we can learn to keep to our local names that will be great for it is our identity. I give it to Yorubas on this, they hardly trade their local names and culture to that of the colonialist. |

rudebouy:First of all, you wish you had SLS's accent. And I'm bloody sure no decent attractive hausa broad in her right mind will tell you she loves you or even come close to you if that's what you're insinuating. |

You are forgetting a very important thing. Does she want to improve? Does she want to change? Does she see the need to? many saying English is a borrowed language are the same that bash Patience Jonathan fir her "uumblela" gaffs. Don't mind them. The world is melting together. You either speak English or French if you want to get ahead and you had better speak it well. Even the Chinese make every effort to speak English well and always appologise when they fail. Rudebouy, if she sees the need too and is willing to change, work on her tenses, her diction, AND her accent. I am not advocating a false accent but it should be less raw |
