Jonathan Sacks Sure-P Chairman For Preaching ‘Change’

President Goodluck Jonathan has removed the chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd) from oce.

This came barely ve days after Agwai had said that leadership change was inevitable in Nigeria and that the country’s leaders must accept it and move with it.

Speaking last Thursday at the 78th birthday anniversary celebration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta.

Agwai had also cautioned the military to stay out of partisan politics if they must win the war against Boko Haram insurgency and other security challenges.

Agwai was appointed substantive chairman of the SURE-P on February 6, 2014.

Jonathan on Tuesday replaced Agwai with Mr. Ishaya Dare Akau whose appointment, according to the presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, takes immediate eect.

Abati said, in a statement, that this was in furtherance of Jonathan’s eorts to continuously re-energise and re-position agencies of the Federal Government for optimal service delivery.

Abati said: “Mr. Akau, whose appointment takes immediate eect, replaces Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.) who served as chairman of the SURE-P until today. The new SURE-P chairman hails from Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State and holds Bachelors’ Degrees in the Arts and Law.

“Mr. Akau comes to the job with years of experience as a high-level administrator in the nation’s public service. His record of service includes tenures as Chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Education Board and Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission”.

The presidential aide said Jonathan thanked outgoing SURE-P chairman, Agwai, for his service to the nation and wished him well in his future endeavours.

Since the British handed over power to us, have we ever had one day light nationwide?

Have we had fuel nationwide before?

Now let me lecture you a little.

When we newly got independence, Nigerians were compelled by NEPA to always leave their light on always because there was excess power looking for outlet.

The military government of which Buhari was part of did not maintain the power sector iinfrastructure. We are not even talking about more power to accommodate the exploding population of the nation. But maintaining the already existing power infrastructure.

The obsolete iinfrastructures are telling on the nation now and we are looking for Jesus to come and do miracle. It is a gradual process to replace the obsolete infrastructure and increase the power.

Lecture me, on power grin

You must be a joker.. I have an advanced degree on energy from one of the world's top universities.

First of all, at independence, there was no such thing as NEPA. It was known as the ECN. Electric Corporation of Nigeria.

NEPA was formed in 1972.

Leaving light on is senseless, what an electric utility would do is economically dispatch its generators to meet demand.

As regards infrastructure, even if everything was perfect, we are still not generating enough. And there is a solution to this, the government can opt for distributed energy sources that can feed into the grid if necessary. While we develop our transmission infrastruture to make it smarter.

In 2007, Nigeria reached a peak of 4000MW, today our peak is just 4,500MW.. Right now, we are generating less than that.

People talk about privatisation. A poorly deregulated system is worse than mediocre regulation. We had an example in California where deregulation led to more black-outs.

4 years is more than enough to sgnificantly improve power, this government has failed to do so.

You said, leave light on.. that is incorrect. At independence, many places were still unconnected to the national grid.

The issue is this, when it comes to power, the present government is not doing enough.

Power can be significantly improved in 4 years. Goverment has failed woefully in this regard.

While do you avoid issues. OK among the places that was connected was it not so?

You said in your previous post that Nigeria has 4500mw. Of this mw, what percentage was before the present administration?

I have not avoided anything.. what was available at independence was not catering to the whole country. I do not know the generation and demand at independence.

I said peak generaton is 4,500.. n 2007 We reached a peak of 4,000.

As at 8 March , we were generation just 3,500MW.

Thanks though in 2011 it was less than 2000mW. But lets assume it was 4000mW.

For 50yrs including the power the British left us, we were able to maintain 4000mw. Comparing 40 years of 4000mW with 500mW of 4 year with many power stations waiting to add to the power sector, an academic professor will call it failsure but a business man will call it success.

What l want you to know is, we measure success when we compare where we are from where we came from and how much in time and resources has been invested.

Success is not comparing yourself with others because you will cut corners trying to catch up as we have been doing since independence.

With the investment in the power sector, we deserve much more.

In 1999, we were less than 2000MW, now we are about 4,000MW.

That looks like improvement until you consider the massive resources spent.

China's three gorges dam cost $22 billion and generates 22,000mw..

Nigeria has spent more

If Germany could generate more than 2000MW in one year (New solar plant from start to commissioning), I see no reason why Nigeria cannot initiate similar projects. The frequent excuses we are being given is that you cannot buy these plants off the shelf but 16 years is more than enough time to take care of our electricity needs.

Are you saying there has not been any investment in the power sector for the last 40 years?

This administration has built power stations what its doing its building gas pipelines that will supply the stations with light and get them connected to national grid.

Now this is where ordinary Nigerian miss it. This power stations can not give us light until they are supplied gas and the power connected to national grid.

Its a phase by phase thing. A child must be born before he/she can run.

Just imagine the President did what other President has been doing. Upgrade a few components of the existing power stations to add 3000mW which will be worn out in 4yrs time and the circle starts again.

Bro, building is the hardest job and many are not willing to undertake the responsibility, according to my boss. You have to get down to the ditch to dig the foundation and its never pleasant. We are praised when our building rise not when we are at the foundation.

This is the reason Africa find it hard growing.

They cut corners.

We have spent over $30 bn dollars since 1999 with no significant improvement.

In four years, enough generation can be added to meet Nigeria's needs..

Stop defending mediocrity..

Government allows for plants to be built with no infrastructure to get gas to them...

Many of the plants commissioned by GEJ were initiated by OBJ.

There we go again, the same excuse of it takes a long time to build power plants. I tell you it doesn't take more than 3 years to build a sizeable power plant from concept to commissioning if the will is there. I just gave an example of Germany which built solar plants in a year. We need to have an energy mix as a country. I remember that during Yar'Adua's tenure, gas pipelines to the power plants were being constructed (I saw them with my eyes, so what happened to those pipelines?) Then we were told that there wasn't enough gas due to vandalism by the militants. Now that the militants are in hibernation, why don't the plants still have gas?

You incorporate all in your plan and start with the plant.

This is the problem that arise when academic professors go into governance or business. They fail abysmally.

How many percentage of the plant components china used in building their plants where locally sourced?

Was the company a china company?

Where the work force all from china?

What was the distance between plant and equipment to site?

just to name a few of the things that can make a huge financial difference in building the two plants by different nation.
