...yea right ...turn of...as if if I pull up wit ma £28,000 (cash) range rover spot..u wunt jump inside...BLAK WOMEN!! (no ofeinse) angry
Why must I wana jump into yours when I have my own? In men, I hate those who flaunt wealth, or those who think they can use it to get me, and I also hate those who u can just see that they are pretending. I don't mean to brag, but I have my own stuff, which my 2 hands worked very hard for. So in a guy fakeness is a complete turn off. I prefer REAL people, and not someone who might wake up having forgotten his accent one crazy morning, or one who feels as if he can't get a lady by just being him. It takes a real man, to ignore what he has and allow a lady to fall in love with him, and not his material. lol Mr Cork, that's how real men get real woman. I still don't believe that in this day and age there are still people who wan't to use cars, wealth or stupid fake accent to get to ladies. which planet are some people living in? or have I just been too caught up in my own world with my own kind of people? is this how the rest of the world sees things or is it just a Nigerian mentality?

Who do I even quote and leave the other. A lot of mix up here.

I have watched Soyinka speak severally and I couldn't find any trace of British accent from the way he speak. Na wa ohh.

Fact is, if you weren't born in Britain or spent your childhood years there your British accent is likely a fake. A lot of people just rap words thinking that's how Brits speak. I laugh. Only about 2 in 10 of those who have migrated and living permanently for years in the UK has the British accent, though not even perfect. Needless to say tourists who just visit on holidays or rap words thinking they have British accent.

If them no born you for UK, or you spent your childhood and teenage years in Britain your British accent is most likely fake.

Quote me with Nigerians who weren't born or grew up here with British accent let's compare their accent to Brits, with available videos on YouTube.

There are many linguists in Nigeria today and yes they speak many languages decently and coherently - would you say an IBO man who speaks yoruba speaks fake yoruba?

People pick accents faster than others and just because many migrants in the US/UK have their mother accents after several years doesn't mean they aren't many others who speak British or American correctly.

There's no big deal with a foreign accent, if you can learn yoruba, Ibo and hausa - then you could also learn the british accent or American. It's all about passion and interest.
Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by Nobody: 6:48pm On Mar 19, 2015
Let me join in the argument.

Some countries have a strong accent thereby making it difficult to fake. That don't mean it can't be done. It all depends on the dexterity of the person trying to fake it and how much time they put into studying the said accent.

When it comes to a British accent. I pretty much understand that the way an average Londoner speaks is quiet different from the way a Welsh man speaks. Same also goes for someone from Scotland. Now that begs the question. What is does British English sound like?

The same can also be said of a Lagos born and bread as compared to the way a Northerner would speak English. Everyone would have his unique accent representing where he or she comes from.

I'll like to add that early exposure also plays a foundational role unto what kind of accent you eventually adopt.
Me for instance, I started pre school at a very early stage..(You guys won't believe the age I actually started 9 months) and my very first teacher was a foreigner. My very first class buddy was a white boy and he used to beat the crap out of me. grin. I started speaking my mother Language (Yoruba) when I was about 7 due to change in environment. Before then I didn't understand jack. This background would play a role on the kind of accent I adopt and over time I picked up new accents according to my environment.

I've actually met a Nigerian girl who speaks like an American. She exposed herself to lots of American influenced media and sort of switched. I still find it difficult she never stepped in the U.S cuz it sound so natural.

Point is, accent can be developed based on the kind off exposure you have. Both through media or location. Besides, there are a Million and 1 languages and corresponding accents and whatever you speak with is only a matter of personal choice and exposure. Fortunately, the Nigerian accent happens to be one of the top 10 sexiest in the world. grin

Haa.. I don't agree with this your post o.. nah.. you got it wrong this time!!

One; I have seen Soyinka talk before and yes he has the brits accent..

Two; I have seen peeps who migrated here in their early 20's and the rest, been here for a very long time. and when they talk you'd think they were born here. do you know background influences a lot??

And please how do you spot a fake brit accent?? teach me, since you know a lot about the fake accent undecided

When it comes to differentiating vowels sound in writing that's not my thing but I am reasonably good at knowing the difference of consonants.

There are many videos on YouTube of Brits whose accent one can never match as same with Soyinka's. Please for starters, take some time out again and listen to Soyinka's videos again on the net and compare with that of Tinie Tempah, Cameron, Boris Johnson etc and see if you can boldly say Soyinka's got Brit's accent. I know you here Brits talk everyday as well in person or you may even have the Brits accent yourself, you really think Soyinka's accent is same with what you here on the streets daily?

Based on the argument on immigrants who migrated to Britain at an adult age with pure British accent that's one fact I won't also want to be engage on. Mixing up words like Jim Iyke did in the past in movies is not American accent but many people thought it was then and still is now. I have had this same argument many times with guys who almost 95% of people in Naija thinks their accent is Brits but admits theirs and the Brits born is largely different.

When you attend an office where a registration is made, and passports or biometric checks is required to run some checks. No matter how British you think is your accent if you weren't born or spend teenage and relatively young years in the UK, the question of where are you originally from will always pops up, if you like have a red passport. But when they here proper Brit accent, such a question hardly surfaces. And it has nothing to do with skin colour, same treatment goes to white (EU citizens) and blacks (African kids or those who spent their youthful age here). Such question comes up because the Brits identifies and can differentiate their accent from that of copy-cats. Pardon any typo, busy with other stuffs while typing.
Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by Nobody: 10:09pm On Mar 19, 2015
^Dude!
What is it with the copy cat thingy... angry

What type of accent would you call I.k Osakioduwa...the dude that hosts Big brother Africa? Just asking, I'm getting. somewhere with this.
Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by JahzaraAde(f): 10:10pm On Mar 19, 2015
Hahaha, this post mades me laugh! Indeed, it's such a turn off it makes me cringe tbh. I usually assume this subset of guys are trying to mimic my accent, so I try my best to ignore it.

Hmm. Little do they know that the Nigerian accent spoken in a deep velvety voice is a very big turn on for me. If he can drop a few bars in Yoruba too (and even a couple of Yoruba adages), he most probably has my attention!
