Why is everyone going Harvard and Cambridge on this statement. Vanguard seems to just be whipping sentiments here. The only statement quoted to Buhari in the report is “It is sad that the value of the naira has dropped to more than N230 to one dollar; this does not speak well for the nation’s economy,’’. Why can't they quote how he said Naira will be equal to the dollar.

this way you'll undastand why nigeria us d way it is, a lot of people who are lettered yet illiterates, who have certificates yet cant pass down valuable knowledge. our leaders understand what majority of nigerians are-gullible. if not,a reasonable person ought first to look for d quoted statement, check for d context on which such is based if it exists or not evaluate for its plausibility b4 jumping to conclusions. however i see people who are on thus thread cos of the title, people who wasted money going to skul criticising buhari for astatement he didnt make. weep for your country or pretend they dont exist.

Pa Buhari is on it again .
This time around he said..................
I’ll make Naira equal in value to dollar, says Pa
Buhari .
.....................................................
Recall according to him Pa Buhari he has 150
cows that refused to increase or reduce in
numbers for decades. No wonder he has to go
borrowing from his friend that works in bank
before he could pay for his presidential ticket.
One begins to wonder what exactly this man Pa
Buhari means by making naira equal in value to
dollar.
This man that couldn't pass any exams during
his days in the military is really making
mockery of the whole issue.
Honestly, me i don tire for this mans intiboribo

Are you serious Your speech just gave you off as someone who lacks complete understanding of Economics>

Illiteracy no be moi moi oh!! Ha! So if someone tells you he will equate the value to the dollar you would just swallow it hook line and sinker??
What were you doing when others were attending Economics class??

For the Naira to be equal to the dollar, you would need to see our dollar reserve rate go to something like a trillion dollars!! Even with 20 years of 20% economic growth rate, we would probably not be there!!

Now the bigger lesson for you is that a very strong Naira is not good for our country especially if you want to produce goods and export competitively..
Now let me explain that to you:
A bag of Dangote cement sells for 1500 Naira.
When the dollar was 160 Naira, that bag of cement was equal to $9.
At the new rate of 215 Naira, that same bag of cement is now equal to $7.
That means if Dangote wants to sell his cement in Albania, he has a better price point than he would have had 5 months ago.

Now imagine the Naira is exchanging at 5 Naira to a dollar.
That same bag of cement would now be equal to $300. Where on planet earth would he be able to sell his bag of cement at that price??

Any country that desires to produce and export to the rest of the globe, prays for a weaker currency to allow its goods better pricing amongst competitors. If Buhari understands economics, he will never pray for a very strong Naira except of course he wants us to keep importing everything!!

Well done sir!!!

26. Nigeria debt paid by Obasanjo. Now Nigeria is back into debt! and naira is worthless too.
27. Not a single criminal in govt has been apprehended or prosecuted. That is not stealing!
28. Quote of the year: Stealing is not Corruption! (That from a PhD holder Pres. GEJ)
29. Commander in Chief of Armed Force who couldn't visit Borno, Yobe and Adamawa to commiserate wt d people but goes there to campaign!

inability to capture, extract information and bring to justice a singe
captured boko haram fighter up till today
25. Mrs Dafty's personal terrorist bombing campaigns in Rivers state (Stoning
the opposition)
26.
Dafty's work for the benefits of enemies of Nigeria - Handpicking
Abacha's son as PDP candidate for Kano, stoppng FaniKayode, treasury
looting case and appointing him in his campaign, supporter of Anenih,
IBB, and other treasury looters who should be in jail
27. Conversion
of MOPOL to Meiguard of the rich while the poor wallow in abject
insecurity; and using regular police, eg. Mbu, as political thugs!
28.
Postponing elections by refusing to provide security when in fact,
elections will last for only one day, and the entire armed forces and
police in Nigeria could have been deployed to secure just that 10hrs of
the election day.
29. Sending troops to look for Sambisa forest in Tinubu's Ikoyi house
30. Giving AIT 10billion to air false and negative videos on APC.

35. SPONSORING of ethnic MILITIAS TO STOP POLLS (e.g. MASSOB, OPC)
36. EMBARASSING PHONE CALL to the Moroccan KING...
37. Babysitting Boko Haram until it became the global threat it now is with

Mistakes are allowed, we are humans. Jonathan's election was a mistake.
Repeating the same mistake again is unpardonable.
Our Children dont deserve that from us!

and that is a prove to tell you that population increase causes inflation.

seriously population increase cause inflation...

inflation is when too much money chases too few goods. when supply don't reach demand...like the one buhari causedp during his rogue military dictatorship. when he reduced import license thereby reducing supply..he made overnight millionaires.. this is a perfect example..

The magic of translating a few pounds in 1970 into today’s multi-billion corporate empire is the secret of what defines
Cletus Ibeto as one of Nigeria’s Corporate Caesars. In the narrative of his life’s odyssey, Ibeto seems to have crossed a
decisive rubicon in business when he profited from a policy change during President Shehu Shagari regime. Under the
liberal regime of President Shehu Shagari, goods could be imported without import license. But as Nigeria’s external
reserve dwindled the government introduced import license.
While other importers stalled at the fence, monitoring the state of things, Ibeto moved to secure N3m import license at
a time a dollar sold for 68 kobo. He sub- sequently imported 65 containers of vital motor spare parts. By the time other
im- porters went for import license, the gov- ernment has tightened the screw and it was virtually impossible to get
import license. To worsen matters, Shagari’s government was toppled and the borders were closed, but by then, while
nobody could import anything, Ibeto’s containers were already in the Nigerian ports.
Ibeto became a virtual monopolist for motor spare parts. “That was the turning point for me,” he declared. “Come and
see the line-up of people who wanted the spare parts. I was packing money with cartons. There was no armed robbery
then, no kid- napping. ..It was a seller’s market. And the mark up was almost 500% but people were buying! In fact,
within two days of the ar- rival of the containers, I made four million pounds!”

This is the highest political lie of the moment, Buhari thinks that exchange rate depends on executive fiat, this shows how much of elementary economics he understands. This reminds me of the then Barkin Zuwo when he was asked to name the minerals in the North, and he said they got coke ca cola. Fanta etc

Ok. So let us assume that such an event happens overnight without a drastic change in productivity or a massive drop in real wages.

An average Nigerian Banker makes around #150,000 per month. Skills wise, this guy might be comparable to a guy making $3000 in the US
So 1 USD suddenly becomes #1 and this banker's productivity and salary stays the same but his salary becomes equal to $150,000. Before he is happy with his paycheck and go on to buy the latest car in town, a few things change.

Why would the bank pay him $150,000 when they can get someone for $3000 in the US? Of course they would not. So, every Nigerian –Bankers, engineers, teachers, accountants e.t.c - would be fired from their jobs and jobs would move out of the country as workforce is cheaper outside Nigeria. Where you cannot move the job outside the country (such as cleaning), companies would find tech. An awesome robotic vacuum cleaner worth $1000 would be used rather than the $30,000 per-month for human cleaner. As people get removed from the jobs, plenty of other jobs that rely on them (restaurants, cafes, retail shops, tourism, airlines...)....all vanish.

As people get fired, they will be ready to work for lower and lower salaries, until their salary drops below the international level of say $1,600. Since 1 USD = 1#, that would make great bankers make #1,600 per-month. How would they pay their outstanding loans and other financial obligations like instalment on cars for example. They cannot and they would default.

The banks would have huge unpaid loans and they will go bankrupt. Investors would exit and government would have print a lot of money to keep the banks alive. That would spike up the inflation and push down the naira so much that the rate might become #900 = 1 USD. At that point, the wage in Nigeria will be so low that jobs will move back again and the cycle would continue.

So in summary, it will just be a Nightmare and if anyone has said he’s gonna make that happen, I don’t know what the person was thinking.

And you think the bolded is IMPOSSIBLE, right?

Its a pity, if you know what the "increase" in Legislooters salary can do for Nigeria, What the money used to BRIBE Obas and Pastors in the last 5weeks can do, ......what money stolen from our nation via round-tripping subsidy SCAM, can do....

I would have loved to do a detailed analysis of your post but its late in the night for me, but l will summarize.

Dont know how old you are but l can tell you that l was old enough to handle a Dollar, when the Naira was EQUAL to the Dollar..... and our reserve was not anywhere a TRILLION, not even a Billion Dollars, back then.
Check the exchange rate in the early 70's and confirm my point.
Back then, Nigeria was exporting a lot of Cocoa, ground nut, Palm Oil, Rubber, e.t.c

It was done then, it can be done now... Period!

2.) To say a very strong naira is not good for Nigeria, to justify the worse-than-Zimbabwean "Naira' we are spending today, is not doing "full justice" to economics!
I wont go on a long analysis of Dangote or Ibekwe but let us just "invert" your statement and see how it pans out.

Can we say "A very strong Dollar is NOT GOOD for America"?.....
.....and despite at almost #240 => Dollar, has it stopped Nigerians from importing from America (most of our imported cars are from there, just to mention one item) or scrambling to buy the Dollar?
More importantly, has it STOPPED America from exporting its products all over the world, especially to Nigeria?
Answer is obviously NO!

Finally, as educated people, we must refrain from espousing what l will call "half knowledge", deliberately or otherwise, especially when doling out "economic precepts". Our analysis has to be "balanced" and reflected on all possibilities.

Let me make bold to say that what YOU THINK may be LOST from a "strong local currency" can be, .....and IS actually NEGATED by the following:

a.) Superior Products (which are always in demand, irrespective of higher prices)

b) Reputation (E.g, America has a "reputation" for "full options" vehicles thus, despite the additional cost, people will rather inport an "American Spec", than one from japan or Europe.

c.) Strong Local Market (Countries with Big population which has "HIGH PURCHASING POWER" can still take advantage of their strong currencies without much negative effect as MOST products from their Factories get consumed locally)

4.) Selective Production (This is similar to (a) above but here, emphasis is on producing goods that are either termed "luxury" or very 'high-tech" and or "uncommon" e.h high class armaments, expensive cars that gets Russians buying , e.t.c.

Bottom line: A Strong currency is NOT a disadvantage to a nation or its export (as you asserted) ...... if you have the right people managing the "MIX" of Economic policies!

I understand that such economic "management" is beyond a "I know Nothing" President or his thieving cohorts, more so in a Nigeria where the leaders stiLl dont recognize the fact that calling you "economic giant of Africa or ranking you #1 on some utopian index" MEANS NADDA, IF YOU CANT EVEN POWER YOUR HOMES OR FACTORIES FOR AT LEAST 12HRS IN A DAY! undecided undecided

We have been trying to do two things since the days of Shagari, without success!

1) Convince foreign INVESTORS that Nigeria is 'the country' to invest. Except for a few "crooked" investors who themselves are only here to scam our system, with the collusion of their local crooks, l have not seen any serious investors in Nigeria, for decades! Some are doing what is called "window-dressing", being around "on paper" .... just in-case something crops up undecided undecided

2.) Export Promotion by keeping a weak currency: This one is a no-brainer! What do we really produce in this country, that is "competitively" worth exporting, ..............using Generator and Diesel as the source of industrial power?

Please, our leaders should stop scamming the populace!
It will not happen, not with Buhari, certainly never with GEJ......unless power becomes at least 80% stable.

Lastpage!

Why are you contradicting urself?BUHARI is on point, take it to anywhere i ll meet you there, telling us that a country like ours that imports virtually everything still needs a weak currency, guy try harder, japan can afford that, china can afford that,a weaker currency is to their advantage,Nigeria of today needs a very strong currency.our leaders devalue our currency cuz imf gives them this condition whenever they run to borrow, not because of any economic plan or advantage.our present Government is a sell out, they don't care about us.

Baba is on point.

You're funny... Did you say Soludo proposed this? Please, before I comment on Soludo (more like my mentor), please provide proof to back this up. I am not surprised SLS did... Anyway, like I asked someone, is this under a favorable or unfavorable condition. Please answer that..

Like I said, let's face real issues; nonetheless, a lower Naira is ALWAYS and will always be favorable under the right condition.

The Central Bank Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, recently unveiled a plan to revert the naira to its pre-1986 value. Prof. Soludo said among other thing that #20 will become the country's highest denomination against #1000 which is currently the highest. Doing this will put the naira at about #1.25 to American (U.S) dollar and invariably transform the naira into a world class currency, and become West African's common currency by 2009.
