I have a question for all.

Is the strength of a machine vibrated block same as that of blocks moulded with hand?

No no no no no no
Don't let anyone talk you in it.
Though hand is normally accepted.
But given the same conditions vibrated ones wil. Have mOre strength.

Love this topic,i having been thinking same too,cos no one no the mixing ratio of this so called vibrated blocks.
i prefered to mould blocks than to buy,but time and supervision is a hidrance here.

I have an idea i tend to use when am set for my projectprobaly next year,a block industry is directly opposite ma plot so i will arrange with
the guy, that is i will but cement, buy water and sand then i will ask them to moould for me,i will only pay cost of moulding which is about 700#/bag.
abi wetin una think,by so doing i will get the desired strenght and good mix i want.

See this thread, The technology of block making and make your decisions from there.......

https://www.nairaland.com/755766/technology-block-

Some call it blocks while others call it 'sandcrete', this is an important building material which we get by mixing powdered cement, sharp sand and water in a ratio made to suit the job it was produced for. You might wonder why I used the phrase 'in a ratio made to suit the job it was produced for'? Okay,  there are many uses for blocks apart from using it to raise the walls in homes and fences. Blocks could be used for a variety of works, including

1. Walling of a house
2. Making a fence
3. Building a generator house or any other house that have vibrating machines inside it.
4. Toilet pits or soak away tanks.

Because of the various uses for blocks, the mixing ratio cannot be the same, we tend to reduce the ratio of sand to a bag of cement if we want a more solid mix or a block product which can do more than covering the walls in a house. I will like to mention here that most houses, especially those built with reinforced concrete columns and metal rods, blocks don't bear any loads, this is why you see houses built without blocks at first, the builder will first raise the columns and deck the first floor, then continue with another set of columns which will bear the next floor, and up and up we go.
There are many different types of blocks in modern building, these include

1. 9" hollow blocks
2. 6" hollow blocks
3. 6" solid blocks
4. 5" solid blocks

These blocks could be used according to the specifications of the building plan you are using. Most houses with more than one floors uses the 9" blocks on the ground floor and maybe the next few floors, but as a house rises in height, it is recommended that the weight of the blocks on the top floors be reduced, ie. If you use 9" blocks to do a ground floor, use 6" to do the top floors to ease the weight on the columns, beams and foundation.

Many more things to say about blocks, let me rest and come back to the topic later.

Allow me to chime in a little bit into this very controversial subject. Concrete blocks depends mostly on the quality of aggregates (sharp sand, soft sand etc) and most importantly the mixing ratio.

Because the way Nigeria is, most people want something for nothing. Lets assume that a properly made block will cost like N140/block, people will come and start haggling even though they know its the normal price in the market.

What most block makers do is cut back on the quality to accommodate the price. If someone is adamant that they want to pay N120/blk, the guy will say fine rather than let the money "walk out the door".

I was listening to a program one day and it featured Engineer Victor Oyenuga (President, Nigeria institute of Structural Engineer 2009/2001) and his recommendations is as follows:

3 sharp + 1 soft + 1bag of cement = 25-30 blocks

I have 2 close friends that produces blocks and even though they produces a little bit more than recommended, they agreed with the the above.

My 2 cents

The unit of measures is the standerd wheel barrow.
Then i agree.

4 wheel barrow to a bag of cement at max 25 blocks of 9or8 inches or 30 for inches

Firstly
I am in the UK, i already did my house foundation (using both manual and machine moulded blocks) before i left naija to london. In two weeks time, I want to continue the project up to completion with the need of about 3000 blocks. I have my immediate younger brother who is going to continue with it (I appreciate his support so far). My concern is weather to get the blocks manually moulded or using machine. it costs N360,000 with machine and I know it is actually roughly N60,000 cheaper to do manual moulding. Mind you, I have to compensate him for his return transportation to the site (N400), daily call credit (N200), daily feeding allowance (N800) which will amount to about N18,000 if manually moulded for 12days. So i have saved N45,000.

As for operational time, I am not in a rush at all - weather for machine or manual moulding

Please I need a very reasonable and genuine reply as to know what to do asap.

Secondly
As old age nears and urge to get married increases, I already planned my introduction/registry for june as I am going to travel to nigeria by then to return here after like 15days, then travel again to naija by sept for wedding (traditional/white) and return again after like 15days. If I chose to do wedding (traditional/white), then the building project will stop at linted level, which means i wont be able to roof/furnish. Then travel again to naija after my fiance graduates after 9months (invariably, she will be in school studying within the one year of marriage) to bring her here for the next 5years. Please note that, I do not have any residential place to be in naija except my parents' partially built place, which i can never go wen I land, so I have been lodging in hotels weneva i land in naija. My concern is: which one do you guys think should be prioritised: wedding ceremony/house completion. If I choose house completion, I will not wed this year until next year. If I choose wedding, then I will not complete the house this year until next year.

The last question is a tough one... Wedding or Completing the house.

I personally will complete the house... if the girl cannot wait for another year or may be less, then she does not love you enough.
Do not leave a house uncompleted.. at least roof it, so you can safe guard the house and continue after wedding..

I may sound unreasonable or selfish, but that is what I will do, personally...

My friend I'll suggest u go and open yr own thread instead of wanting to derail this topic with yr love affair.

If u don't know what is more important to you at this stage, then i 'll suggest that you are not ready for marriage just yet.not until the house is fully completed.

ETHIX:
Please mould your blocks. Find details below:

A tipper of sand cost 14,000 (not sharp sand o)
A tipper can mould 16 bags of cement
Workmanship per bag is 700 naira
You can mould 35 blocks with a bag of cement and the block will be very strong.
The cost of 1,120 blocks is 105,700 naira
Far better than you buying 1000 blocks for 120k
You pay for workmanship according to the bag of cements used which is 700 naira per bag regardless the number of labour used.

Is not as if there is huge margin from moulding your blocks and outright purchase. However your building will not experience any mishaps.

Op, NOTE the bolded. Its all encompasing.
