Car: infinity I30 base.

The car has been very reliable. But recently, I realize I have to rev the engine higher before it moves, especially after stops. Is it a transmission problem and what's the solution.

Thanks

seems like a tranny problem. The car might not be starting in first gear. Have you scanned for transmission codes? Is the ATF level ok? What color is the ATF and how does it smell(does it smell burnt).

2005 Lexus es 330

Just bought it on nairaland nigerian used with a bad transmission.

It can't change out of first gear and drops to neutral with a little thump

I haven't actually seen the car. The mechanic purchased it on my request and described the above.

He says it has to be changed which is the current plan. He says he can get a used transmission for 120k

Please advise

Wow , you are really an auto wiz! Yes it smells burnt, the color is dirty brown- black. It starts at first gear though.

sounds like your speed sensor might be bad or might have a wiring problem. If not the gear will need some repair . 120K is not too bad a price for the gear but I'm sure you can fix it for a little less. Have the car scanned lets know what codes your ECU trows out

An oil flush might improve it a little but You will probably need a new transmission.

Means the problem might be electrical . Have your mechanic test all the solenoids if any one is stuck or not functioning properly

I have changed the oil. The oil inside was very dark and about 1.5l. I used honda dw1 4l to guage it. But the symptoms are still there: Hesitation before changin gear, jerking when changin to R, D and D2 on idle, and a clunkin noise from the gear side when shiftin to R and D. Please what do u advice? What could be the problem? The D light is Not blinking.

I think that gear is already damaged. it is usually not too expensive so its better to replace with a good one. but just to be sure get you mech to check that the solenoids on the gear were not switched. ( the brown and black in their right positions)

Thank u very much. So u advise I change it outright instead of trying to rebuild it?

Pls do you have an idea how much it could cost

It is a lot cheaper replacing with a used transmission than trying to rebuild it. Rebuilding a transmission with genuine parts would cost between 200k -500k(or even more depending on the car) but the gear will end up being like a brand new tranny with warrantee. Buying a used tranny might not cost more than 100k and they do work (with a little bit of luck they might last a couple of years so far u check if the oil is not smelling bunt before buying ).

If anyone tells u he will rebuild ur transmission for less amount then be sure it will never be a clean job ans such jobs don't last up to e months before it goes back to square one.

Very true, though it could be much cheaper than 200k. The more the forward gears, the higher the cost of rebuild.

Thank for this info. But I do not think it makes much sense to spend 200k - 500k (average 350k) on one repair for a car whose re-sale value averages 400k

I will do my best to ensure the ATF from the used tranny is not smelling burnt tho. Thanks

Now u get the drill. That's more reason why Americans prefer to sell their cars once they notice any transmission problem rather than rebuilding them once the warranty period is over. Rebuilding transmission in the USA costs between $1,500 - $5,000.
