" Wow!" Rachel's eyes widened in admiration as she beheld Stella fully dressed in her wedding dress. She just looked amazing. Every single accessory she had on seemed to match perfectly. Right from the blinking white bead necklace on her neck to the beautiful earrings she had on down to her silvery Dexter heels and wow, she looked really great.

" Don't mind me, I couldn't wait for the makeup artist yet. Could hardly sleep all night. I should take it all off before they arrive, don't you think?" Stella turned to face her fully with a smile on her face, " Are you just going to stand there? How do I look?"Stella smiled with so much joy in her threatening to burst forth though she was visibly nervy.

" You..... look... nice, I must say," Rachel could find her voice finally as her eyes were still on the wedding dress. Now, she wished she wasn't the conveyer of spoiler news.

" Thanks, means a lot coming from my would-be sister in-law in less than twelve hours, " Stella was still smiling as she paced slowly.

" Hmmn, I guess so. Has th...." Rachel started trying to make out the best way to start up the conversation when Stella suddenly seemed to notice her seemingly casual dressing,
" It's barely six a.m yet. What's up and why are you not all 'dolled up' yet? Do you plan on being late to your brother's wedding?" Stella had her eyebrow raised already.

" I was already getting dressed up when errm..." Rachel stuttered as Stella's smile faded and she became anxious.

" What happened? Is it...? Oh no!" Stella slowly sat back on her bed already having a full glimpse into whatever Rachel was about to say.

" I'm sorry, Stella but it was my dad that called off the wedding really late last night and I thought I should come see you first thing this morning," Rachel disclosed finally.

" What?! Your father?" Stella raised in disbelief. She had thought Mike was the one who sent his sister to her to save her the disgrace of showing up at church the next morning without a groom. He really kept to his words but how he got his father to be the one to call off the wedding was something beyond what she could fathom. She buried her face in her palms and couldn't find the tears to shed.

--------

Chief Adeoye swallowed his pills quickly trying to get his nerves calm. He hoped the pills will take effect soon as he put down the glass cup on the tray held forward by the maid. She received it and turned to leave bowing lowly.

" Sir, the calls are getting incessant. Should I at least take.....?" The personal assistant had hardly ended his statement when Chief waved him off,

" Don't take any calls, Dele. They would be here soon anyways. Just get me Kiitan. Get him here, now" He forced out clutching his chest and breathing heavily.

" Are you okay, sir?" The P.A. questioned though his eyes could have told him his boss was far from being alright. Right from the previous night when he had been pacing about in the study with his head hung down in deep thoughts to when he had asked him to put a video call to his ex-wife and they both had spoken for almost an hour with him being asked to excuse them.
The final straw was when he had been called back in and asked to send a message to the headquarters that the wedding which was slated for the next morning was getting called off. He had gone like, ' What the...'. Just when he thought the chairman had it covered and he had even asked his wife to get his suit ready.
Then the chairman called the multimillionaire planned wedding off, just like that. He could swear that if Mike was his own son, he would have had a rope hung round his neck to bring him to the wedding if the need permits so.

Now, he couldn't even consider going home. The chairman's personal line had been buzzing nonstop about what was going on. All he had been doing was direct them to voicemail but now he needed to start thinking of an excuse to give the various business callers. But first, he should get the man a doctor, he didn't look good, Dele thought as he cast a long look at Chief Adeoye with his hand on his forehead and his eyes shut with his breaths rapid but a little stable. The pills must be taking effect, he thought and left the study. Just when was this Mike going to answer his phone, he said to himself as he redialed the number hoping he picked it now.

Mike ran his right hand over his head as he sat up in the sofa. He pulled away the blanket and folded it aside. Sophia must have put that on him last night and he had really slept for this long. Nearly ten hours straight, he thought as he glanced up and saw it was nearly eight a.m. already. A luxury he couldn't afford even in the villa. He wondered what magic Sophia had used to get him to sleep longer than the five hour sleep he struggled to have each day.

" Mummy!" It was Temi's loud voice that got him to finally stand up as he yawned and rubbed his eyes.

He saw Sophia already at the dining table with a bowl of cereals while she reached for the flask of water and turned to look at where Temi was standing by the staircase. She glanced over at him and smiled, " I thought you were planning to lay there all day. Morning," she greeted him and beckoned to Temi who seemed to see her dad now as she ran to him.

" Since when did she call you mummy?" Mike asked curiously as he caught Temi up and threw her a couple of times making her giggle over, " Morning, sweetheart. And you were a real sleepyhead yesterday, you know," he told the kid and hung her over his shoulders.

" I didn't know when too. I guess she's started now," Sophia paused as if trying to recollect something. She only shrugged, " So I hope you weren't in too much regret for dumping your 'royal bed' and spending the night on a couch," She said with emphasis.

" Well, actually I slept more peacefully here and do not regret one bit. It's a good thing anyway since today is Saturday," he told her and walked to her at the dining table.

" Your wedding day too," Sophia said gently and put the prepared cereal bowl aside before screwing back the flask.

Mike sighed before Temi pulled his hand again, " Throw me up again," she asked him excitedly.

" Alright, dear," he turned his face away from Sophia whose eyes were scrutinizing him really hard as though she wanted him to say something and threw Temi up a little higher than before and catching her in mid air.

" Michael, switch on your phone. I'm getting worried," Sophia told him plainly.

" I left it in my car last night. Intentionally, sort of," he admitted and pulled the bowl of cereal to himself, " Is she ready to have breakfast now?" He asked again changing the topic and making Sophia more worried.

" Temi would eat whenever but right now, you should get your phone and I don't know.... Answer a call," she wheedled pleadingly. The whole suspense was getting her unsettled.

Mike looked at her for a couple of seconds hesitantly before walking out of the living room to get his phone in his car. Sophia watched him not shifting away from where she was.

" I'm gonna turn the damn thing on now," he said and switched on the android.

Sophia crossed her arm across her chest and said nothing, just watching him.
The phone had hardly being on for a second when tons of messages seemed to beep at the same time. He sighed and was about to click the first open when a phone call came in and Mike slowly put Temi down who was hung over his shoulder all the while, " Hello," he said into the receiver on answering after staring at the ringing phone for a while.

The other parts of the conversation sure didn't seem totally expected nor unexpected either as Michael's expression was confusing her. The whole anxiety rush over her was overwhelming and she rested against the dining chair for support.

" Dad called it off," Mike told her as he ended the call and looked over at her.

Chapter 28

Dammy pushed the front door, a little surprised it was not locked from within. Maybe Sophia had a guest or was not inside, she thought as she took off her sandals.

" I was just going to call you. I think I left the door open," Sophia said on seeing Dammy as she stepped down the stairs with Temi strapped to her back with a wrapper.

" I thought you were not inside and I had planned on coming today even if you don't call," Dammy told her and went to check on Temi at her back who was asleep and really sweating, " Is she okay?" She asked since it was the first time she would see Sophia having her child on her back.

" Yes, she should be. She was crying so much the minute Michael stepped out. Said she wanted to go with him. I could only calm her this way," Sophia explained and gestured for Dammy to sit.

" How about you?" Dammy asked seeing Sophia still stood taking paces.

Sophia shook her head, " I don't want to wake her yet. She gets uncomfortable the minute I try to sit," she told Dammy now,

" Nawa o. It's not easy to be a mother. I should start learning from you," Dammy raised jokingly making Sophia laugh shortly as she stood next to Dammy's sofa and rested against it,
" So, how is today like?" Dammy switched back to why she was here. Sophia had told her Michael's wedding was supposed to be today and she had told her he would do anything to stop it. Sophia had just laughed, said he wasn't that bold. Now she was here to confirm if she had been right.

" What do you mean?" Sophia retorted feigning ignorance though she clearly knew what Dammy was referring to.

Dammy raised her eyebrow, " You mentioned Michael was here earlier today. Why would he be here when he has 'guests' to attend to somewhere else? What's going on?"

Sophia stood back straight up and tried sitting on the arm of the chair. When she saw Temi didn't stir, she turned back to Dammy, " I think Michael has gotten into something with his dad. Not that he's telling me anything which sucks terribly. But he told me before he left that his dad called it off and that look I saw on his face shows he has plenty to do with that. He only told me he'd be back and left. He really....." Sophia sighed.

" First, you need to get me something for being right when I said your Michael wasn't getting married if it wasn't to you," Dammy teased at first.

" In your dream, abi?" She smiled.
" And are you sure he didn't give you the slightest hint? Anything before today that can give you an idea of what he was up to?" Dammy moved back to a serious note.

" Aside him asking me to leave for L.A. with Temi? Nothing," Sophia shook her head.

" He asked you to leave?" Dammy was obviously a little surprised

" Yes, but I didn't even let him end before I told him no. The U.S. is not somewhere I plan on going back to anytime soon," she continued in defense.

" Then, he most likely moved to plan B. Thanks to you being strong headed," Dammy noted.

" What could that be? Because I am so in the dark here," Sophia stood up again looking at Dammy with interest.

" You just have to wait a little. Your Micheal seems really adorable," Dammy smiled.

" Adorable in running off? Then, yes," Sophia smiled back at her , " I need to finish up some laundry. You want to help?" Sophia beckoned as she walked to the stairs.

The doctor looked at his patient and shook his head. The man's blood pressure was beginning to skyrocket and it was getting dangerous. Only if he could agree to come to the hospital. But Chief was really stubborn. Had swore not to step out of that study until his son came in to explain himself.

' Kiitan is what I need now not stupid tests,' he had stubbornly said.

" Sir, I still think you should come in. It is not safe for your delicate health this way, sir," he tried persuading again but only got waved off. The personal assistant then ushered him to the the door. Taking a last look at his patient, he silently prayed the man would be alive for much longer even in his headiness. He might collapse and have a stroke if he continued this way.

As he was about to pull the door open, the handle turned simultaneously and the son walked in. Thank God, the doctor couldn't help but mutter and glanced at Mike once before finally leaving.

" Can you excuse us too?" Mike said to the personal assistant. He never exactly liked him. He was just another of his father's puppets.

" I'm sorry but I don't feel it would be safe for the chairman with just you," Dele countered standing closely to him.

Mike wanted to say something else when his father took his hand off his forehead and spoke, " Dele, you leave. Let me talk to the prodigal son," he put his legs down from the sofa on which he had been lying.

Hesitating for a little while, Dele looked up at Mike again before reading the memo and walking out, ready to eavesdrop on the conversation by the door.

" You sounded like the call was urgent. I thought you were in I.C.U. or something." Mike still managed to feign calmness as he could hear his dad's hard breaths. He didn't think his dad could get this weak. He was still human after all.

" Is this because you hate me so much or because of that girl? The one that claims to have a child for you? Or you just didn't want to get married?" Adeoye asked his son.

" All the above coupled with the fact you managed to create enmity with a number of people. Even I was surprised by their readiness to make you toothless for a while." Mike said to his dad and proceeded to sit on the other sofa opposite him.

" You realize what you and your brother are doing is more to your detriments? I strive to make you strong and wealthy and I get this?!!!" His voice raised a pitch higher as he pointed at the papers on the study table.

" I made good use of your strivings. That should compensate you a little. And come on, dad, the company is still owned by us. Only your rights would need my signature to become valid. It's still got a silver lining for you, dad" he sat to face his dad square.

" How you got them to sell out half their shares to you to make you the major shareholder, I don't understand that but know one thing, Olakiitan that you started it all. Let's see how long you can hold on to being Chairman. The ball is in your court now, son and I am proud you learnt a couple of things from me. I only hope your knowledge helps you to hang on for much longer," Chief Adeoye told him in a tone that could get anyone thinking.

" Dad, you're still chairman you know. Just a motion for your dismissal which is going to be decided on Monday. So you are welcome to DeLair any day. Always are. Just don't bring along some of those your sidekicks. They make me sick," Mike said and got up. He walked to his dad's study table and smirked on seeing the notice of change in leadership and shareholding as well as the motion for change of the chairman and Mike being the substitute lying there. The major shareholders surprised him when near seventy percent of them were ready to sign their alliance with him. They were not exactly fans of his dad after all and only followed him because he was still chairman and no one was ready to challenge that then.

" What did you promise them?" Chief Adeoye couldn't help but ask. How Mike convinced nearly half the board to give him half their shares each to make him hold 58.7% now was the first thing that made him develop a headache. When he was here thinking they were mostly his loyalists, they had turned back around to form an alliance with his son that now made him ' toothless' indeed since Mike wouldn't need him to sign before taking steps. If this was what he got for signing marriage contract with Mr. Lawson, then he wish he didn't. While he was expecting his son to come to him and agree to the marriage, Kiitan was busy colluding with a board on how to get him busy for a while than play with his life.

" I learnt a couple of things from your dear lawyer and mum," Mike told him and turned to leave the office," And see a doctor, dad. You look tired," he added in the same words his dad always used to tease him when he didn't know the weight of the sword his dad handed over to him by making him director. Now he knew better than walking away.

Chapter 29

---------

" So what do I offer you?" Sophia asked handling with her hands nervously as Peter sat on the sofa. She just found her feet stuck to a point.

" Anything is fine," Peter told her trying to maintain his calm. He wasn't dating her anymore so he was wondering why he still felt awkward sitting opposite her. He really was going to get over her someday, he thought.

Sophia went to the double door Haier Thermocool refrigerator and pulled out a pack of fruit juice. She picked a glass cup on the dining table and went to set it before Peter.

" Thanks," he muttered, " And where is your child?" He asked her.

" She is sleeping upstairs," Sophia told him as she watched him poor himself a glassful and sipped.

Peter nodded. He never thought he could have the courage to come to her house again. Not after she ripped his heart apart effortlessly. But to move on, he knew he had to come back and sort his feelings out. Let go of her.

" You aware today ought to have been Mike's wedding day?" He asked her as she slowly took a seat opposite him.

Sophia nodded, " He said his dad called it off."

" You know what Mike did to get his dad to call it off because of you," he looked straight at her as she still held her fingers together unable to meet his eyes nor reply,
Peter continued seeing she wasn't saying anything, " Mike started a war with his father. Asked the board to pass a motion to dismiss his father as chairman and he also acquired a lot of shares to become the next possible substitute for his dad. The whole company is presently in an anxious mood on what the results of the board meeting on Monday will be," he explained to her.

Sophia stood up from the sofa unable to hide her concern, " And Michael? You think he would be alright with all these?" She asked pacing.

Peter snickered, " God, Sophia. You care this much about him that you even forget I'm the one sitting here. Damn it, I thought I still had a place in your heart," he said in a hurt tone. Sophia paused abruptly,
" I was just worried about him. He doesn't have a reason to start something like this with his dad no matter how poorly they get along," Sophia tried explaining though that did little to convince Peter. He had lost her the minute she had seen Mike with him at that bar.

" No, come on. It's great. You two are epic, you know? And I came here to let you go. To free myself from the strings I still leave attached. So don't bother explaining. And moreover, he loves you this much. Told me he hoped to disappoint me and kept to that. I was impressed when I heard the news. You two are great together." He stood up and walked up to her,

" I'm going to miss you, sweetheart," he told her and pulled her in for a hug. Sophia didn't bother pushing him off. He needed it more than anything,

" Peter, I am so sorry about everything. You deserve better than me. You'd meet someone much more better than a psychotic drama queen like me," she tried reassuring as he pulled away from her.

" That could help a little. I think I just got your permission to go out and date," he tried joking as he carefully hid the pain he was feeling at that minute.

" Thank you for everything. You would never know how much help it was having you around," she told him as he smiled back and proceeded to the door,

" Say hello to the girl. And I hope not to ever run into you again," he finished and pulled the door open to leave.

Sophia smiled and sighed. Why did she have to be this much of a heartbreaker?

Dayo scoffed as he saw Dotun approach him at the bar counter,
" Tck, surprise indeed," he said to himself and took a shot of his whisky.

" How far, Dayo?" Dotun stretched forth his hand to Dayo who first looked at the outstretched hand hesitantly and then at Dotun's face before taking it,

" I'm good, relatively. So what's up?" Dayo asked looking at Dotun suspiciously. He didn't trust him one bit anymore.

" Come on, don't look at me like that. What did Kiitan tell you I did?" He took his seat beside Dayo and ordered a glass of whisky too.

" Nothing much. Except you've been up to no good since I last met you," Dayo told him and turned his eyes away.

" He has also been up to no good. You aware of how well he's handling his father's company affairs? He has been a real model son," Dotun remarked and raised his glass to Dayo as he received it from the bartender.

" I know that well since I was also a party to the decision. You forget my dad is also a member of the board," Dayo told him, " When you change, by the way? When did you degenerate up to this point?" Dayo turned to look back at him.

" I don't know. I only lost the only chance of burying the hatchet with Mike, though it couldn't exactly be buried. I....just found out where I stand right now is a really big loss to me," Dotun admitted and took a quick gulp of half his drink.

Dayo made a quick observation of Dotun. He didn't even know whether to trust him or not, only he knew Dotun and Mike were long past the point where he could make them forgo the past. Especially not now when Mike was back with Sophia and would do whatever it takes to keep her with him. That didn't include bringing Dotun back in the picture. Just like he said, it was his loss.

" So you're still going to marry that your fiancee? You're fine with it?" Dayo was seemingly concerned and curious. If Mike could never get involved with Dotun, then maybe he could manage an acquaintanceship with him. Just, maybe.

" Of course. Not like I have a choice. Not everyone is as daring as Mike," Dotun observed and sighed. Time had really flown fast. He remembered his eighteenth birthday party. Mike had raised a bottle of champagne and made a toast before opening it,

' No single thing should come between us, D-boy. This should be a toast to a friendship that would last forever. That is if your back isn't all bent and your teeth are still in place by the end of 'forever', ' he had toasted jokingly at the party then with most of their friends laughing.

' Yeah. Don't just fall in love with a too pretty girl. She might just get between us,' he had retorted in laughter.

' You are right, D-boy. You would just have to watch it then,' Mike answered and popped the champagne open.

Dotun rubbed his right hand through his head. That was exactly what happened after all.

" Daddy, please. I swear this is going to be the last time I would bother you ever again," Sophia pleaded over the phone.

" Sophia, listen. I was planning to come home anyways three days to Christmas. So it wouldn't be reasonable to come this week. This is still the last week in November and I don't even know who the patient you are referring to is," her father contested on the phone. He was busy as it was, not that he couldn't make out the time but he just wasn't in for another flight down to Nigeria.

" Daddy, it's Abigail. Don't you remember that my friend? The one at secondary school that came to Minnesota alongside me. Daddy it's a matter of life and death here," Sophia explained to her father.

" Is it the same girl that ruined you in twin cities? Are you telling me to come and save her life now? Sophia, have you lost it or what?" He was definitely surprised at his daughter's request. He knew Abigail very well. He used to call her father when Sophia and Bimbo stayed at their place sometimes. So he knew her and was also aware of her involvement in his daughter's emotional torture. So why Sophia was calling down to come down to Nigeria again was a big surprise to him. He didn't even know where she had met Abigail. Thought they had parted ways long since.

" Daddy, you should trust me..... Hello... Hello. Oh damn!" Sophia put away the phone as the network connection got severed. She would redial his phone. There was no way she was letting Abigail pass on just like this. She had heard from an acquaintance the previous day that Abigail was having complications in child birth and was now in comma after going into labor for nearly five days. The very second she heard, Sophia had gone to see her in the hospital where she lay unconscious. She looked bad, really awful.
She had also met her husband who cared less, told a friend she saw him with that if at the worst she died then it would be good riddance. He only hoped the baby would be saved before she passed off. That had sent her uneasy. She couldn't watch her die like this. At least, she needed to get punished by her before she could think of taking the 'easier' way out.

She would call her dad again. There was no way she would let him turn her down. She would pay for his ticket if he tried that as an excuse though he could very well afford it himself. She understood him. Knew why he was being careful. After seeing his daughter relapse because of her friend, he had every right to refuse her. But that wouldn't be now. She needed his skills more than ever now. If he could save Abigail, then she would find a way to deal with her herself.

" Dr. Ayoola is already here. He's a renowned gynecologist who also has ample knowledge in obstetrics. He is an embedded talent who doesn't just take any patient. He stays in Iowa but was invited by his daughter, your wife's friend, I was told. So you have her to thank," the doctor informed Tunde who was a little confused. As far as he was concerned, Abigail didn't have one responsible friend he could point at. So he wondered who the Samaritan was,

" What friend?" He had to ask.

" Oh, you don't know? It's Barrister Sophia. She is just at the reception," he told Tunde who thanked him and went out to check who the 'friend' was. He went on to the spacious air-conditioned reception and scanned faces for who this Sophia could probably be.
He didn't have to wonder for long as he soon saw a doctor in his fifties in a theatre overall in the company of about five other surgeons as well as another lady who was standing close to him,

" Thank you so much, dad. Abigail is much too young to just be left to die," she was saying to him and it didn't take him long to figure she would be the Samaritan. One he had never set eyes on. Only she looked strangely familiar. He shrugged and walked to the group,

" Hello, sir. I'm Tunde, Abigail's husband and really pleased to have you around," he stretched his hand forward for a handshake.

" Good to meet you. You should thank my daughter here not me. I'm only here because she insisted," Dr. Ayoola told Tunde who turned to look at Sophia. She looked too calm to be his wife's friend, he thought as he stretched his hand to her," Hi, we have never met, I think?"

" Yes, we haven't. I haven't kept contact with Abigail in a while," Sophia explained and smiled.

A smartly dressed nurse walked up to the party then, " Everything is in place, sir. And the theatre is this way," she gestured to a wide passage to the right.

" Young man, you most definitely would need the prayers now," Dr. Ayoola patted his back and left with the other surgeons.
Sophia heaved and went to sit. Tunde followed and sat beside her. She looked like she cared a lot about Abigail especially with that worried look she couldn't conceal which wasn't making her beautiful face look any better.

" How long have you known Abigail?" Tunde cleared his throat and asked.

Sophia sat back and turned to face him, " Since primary school. Primary two. We were sitting beside each other and just got along so well. Had our share of fights....," Sophia smiled and continued with the description of what could otherwise have been a perfect friendship.
