I have helped people complain of such things as well..Let me add a few points
1. Please make sure you attend classes and listen attentively...This is important because when you are reading that topic,you remember explanations used previously by the tutor and the knowledge will stick.
2. Using the course outline,read ahead of lecturer..for example,if a lecturer informs you that he will teach ReACTiONS of alkanes in his next class,try to read the reactions before the class and immediately after the class.
3. While reading,try as much as possible to remember using Mnemonics.....like a list or a song to remember things or try to relate things to familiar things...such as the colour of iron(iii)oxide which is reddish brown to the reddish brown shoe you dad bought or the belt you have....It will stick that way.
4. Quit moving with friends who will do nothing but make feel inferior.....they will make you fail before you get into the exam hall.
5. Read and read and read a material more than once.....read to the extent that you will be able to tell the next sentence from the first.
6. Include God in your endeavors and steer clear from friends.

I am a student of a state university I am in my third year now.
My first and second year grade were very low not that I don't study but I always seem to forget what I studied during exams.
When my first year result was out it was far below my expectations because I really took my time studying so as to make good grade but it was not so
I prayed about this.
Again in my second year same thing happened I don't know if its the way I study
I even get mocked by my friends whu don't even study as much as I do. I actually get depressed and sometime think of committing SUICIDE.
Sometimes I will leave my place of residence for the library for almost 6-8 hrs just for good grade but it will turnout the opposite.
I am in my third year and with exams fast approaching I will not like what has happened in the past happen again
Please I will like u to suggest ways IN WHICH I can read as well as retain as well as recall during exam

Get at least 6 years past questions before writing any exams. Solve these questions as if you are in the exam hall, then review your answers with suggested solutions. You should be able to see how far you can retain/recall during exam. Solve enough questions!!!!
You will be familiar with how to tackle questions during exam and reduce exam tension. You should have work through different scenarios that will make you confident.

From your writing....I think you are not ready for university level education. If you successfully completed secondary education you would know how to study, to retain and apply what you learned. University is not the place to learn and practice how to study.... and whatever course you are doing... you need to have above a certain level of knowledge and understanding or the lectures and work would be above your head. If you find it is then maybe you need to take a break and reapply later when you are better prepared.

if you see the problems in the heads of many men and women smiling you will run to your room to thank God for what he has done for you.
suicide is not the black man's mentality.
there are many uneducated millionaires out there who have graduates doing shoddy jobs for them
what do you want out of school? good grades only? because good grades does not guarantee financial sucess. even if you are granted the best result now, with the attitude and mindset you have; you will still tell people you want to commit suicide tomorrow at the slightest change in fortune or challange. With suicide, you are not exactly threatening anybody. no body mourns another for too long. you are the greatest stakeholder of your life. if its good; you in a position to help others. otherwise; you are in a position to demonstrate a strong will power, resilience, and a mindset that recognises the fact that theres no going back on this journey to sucess no matter how rough the road is. and tomorrow. yours can be the story of a hero who despite all the obstacles; did not give up in the condition where every body would understand if he did. give thanks to God. theres more to life than meet the eyes. life transcends beyond school, grades and many other challanges designed to help you develope a strong character.

Dear student,
please follow these steps and you should improvements in your grades.
1. If you have not already done so, repent of all your sins and give your life to Jesus Christ. Also be an active member of a Christian fellowship in your institution.
2. Dont just read for the purpose of passing your tests or exams, read for knowledge.
3. Always ask questions from your lecturers in any aspect you dont understand in class. Dont postpone till some time after the class.
4. Always make sure you do proper revision after every lecture; this will help you understand better since its still fresh. This will also help you to only need revision during any test or exams.
5. Never miss any lecture and always try and sit in the front of the class so that you will hear the lecturer clearly.
6. Get the syllabus ahead of each semester for every course so that you may be able to read ahead of the lecture. Let your browsing be more about your studies.
7. Always pray before and after you read and do same for your exams. Pray that God will take your reading especially those aspects that will come out in the exams or test.
8. Play less. You have to play for sure but let it be for less time compared to before.
9. Dont keep boyfriend or gorlfriend for now, it would further be a distraction from your studies.
10. Always do your assignments in time. Never wait till deadline day or postpone it. If possible do it on the same day you were given.

There is a huge difference between read and study, you study for an exam. Get past questions to prepare yourself. Then watch your activities, are you actively involved in any social activities? This helps your alertness and psychology. Good luck

Loool.... Okay, so I've read a lot of comments on this thread, and I'm like WTF!!!!! spirit of knowledge and understanding.......if that means persistent reading then yupzzz... I agree.... But if it's actually a real spirit, then trust me that's a very lame way of religions attempt to conquer all... I think I have a solution to your dilemma based on your problem.... First...do not engage in the practice of having a reading partner... Although reading partners tends to increase your drive to read-knowing the fact that someone is actually waiting for you at a particular venue will motivate you to read- you tend to kinda absorb your partners weakness, it slows down your reading speed.... What you can actually cover in an hour will take you like two or three hours....in fact, the reading session may turn to a talk about soccer, and if with a female, a romantic tie


If you intend on having a super genius intellect, practice PHOTOREADING technique....this is available on the internet....if you use the internet as well as you claim, you would've probably found it already..... And if you really know your way around the internet, using websites like 4shared.com, you'll find the pdf and audio lectures of the technique for free....
Please practice this technique during your holidays, and make sure you perfect it before you try it on your studies....

To have an above average intellect, you can use this second technique....trust me, you would be among the top students in your class if you practice this.... You must use this at the beginning of your new semester for maximum effect..... Make sure you have the course outline or scheme for that semester.. .. First, before any class, preview what you want to read....get a material that covers the topics that you would be taught in the next class....DON'T MEMORISE... Don't commit anything to memory ... Just speed read the material....speed reading means you so not say what you are reading aloud and you do not subvocalize.... In this stage which I'll call preview.....look for any connection, new words, new formula ...things you've not seen before... New concepts and ideas....encircle them with a pencil ...this should not take you up to 10 minutes, no matter how difficult or new the material is.... When you are through with that, google search the new terms and concepts you've just circled.... After that, try to relate what you encircled with the surrounding words, then read up the material.... Please time yourself.... Give yourself 1 hour..to preview one new material....the idea goes like this.... Building up memory is like building up a house.... trying to cram or assimilate a whole new material for the first time is like trying to build you house by uprooting someone else's own and placing it on your land... Trust me you'll have a mess for a house, just as a mess for a memory... Building a strong memory is like building a house ....gradually and gradually it becomes strong to withstand the winds of exams, tension and all.....now number next.....after previewing, have a sound sleep... Go to class the next day....listen attentively.... Please don't go about with the habit of asking d lecturers questions... This irritates me....why ask the lecturer when you can easily look it up on the internet....most people ask questions to sound intimidating in class.....let your result speak for you.... Keep your profile low key....

Pen down the questions you have on a book which you may call scrap book ..... If the lecture dictates, please do not write.... Just LISTEN (STEP 2).... And pen down important POINTS...especially when they relate with what you read the previous night... Your lecturer will probably give you guys his lecture material, but if not, read meet those who write down every word the lecturer says... Photocopy them... Now return to your hostel or to a place where you'll not be disturbed.... A place where no one will stare at you oddly... and do this......MEMORIZE(STEP 3).... READ OUT LOUD.... Read the material saying it out to your hearing, do this as many time as possible.....repetition is the key.....this way, you're commiting the material to memory in three ways.... Visually with your eyes, verbally by saying it with your mouth and via auditory route by hearing what you are saying.... I call this accelerated learning... Now this could take you 4 or 5 hours.... You should be able to say every line, even if you're asked to recite a line in from sleep.... The idea is this.... The fact that you know and cannot forget your name is as a result of your mother repeating your name severally to your hearing.... Now after that......take your textbook, and read it up....normally...don't commit textbooks to memory... Textbooks just helps to add important information missing from your lecture material ( i call this SEARCH FOR THE MISSING LINKS....this is a sure way to deal with those lecturers who are notorious for setting questions outside what they taught.....)... Next, resolve to pastquestions... Do this consistently, search for pastquestions like your life depends on it... Read read and read ...repeat rePeat and repeat.....with a MOTIVe set to be the best and your AcTION of continuous reading, let your MOTIVATION be fuelled by your motive and driven by your actions... Remember to reduce your out-of-school activities...reducing church activities to Sunday activities....prayer meetings, in-between-the-week-activities, and all should be scraped out.....BRO with this info, you're good to go... One more thing... Don't make the library your sole place to READ... The theory is this.... If you consistently read in one spot, you'll better remember it on that spot....some kind of psychological dependence related, learn to read in different places,.. If fact, when solving past questions, practice it in the exam hall...you'll get accustomed to the environment that during your exams, it would be like you're just solving one of those questions....


Last bullet......

. The main cause of exam failure in students who read every day yet come out with ugly results is simple.... THEY READ THE WRONG, IRRELEVANT, AMBIGUOUS MATERIALS... They are the ones you'll see in class with huge textbooks, asking questions that makes the lecturers look awed and confuse others...

Just be humble, quiet... If you're the type that teach, go ahead and teach what you've learnt.... In the end, you'd succeed...remember to make your effort seem effortless....don't show everyone how hard you read.... Read with all effort, but let others think you're doing it with ease.... THIS IS THE SECRET!!!

Chika without sounding overly spiritual, I'd love to know if you've given your life to Christ cos this could be a spiritual affair, if you have not please do and hand over your academic to Him too and you'll be surprised by the changes, if you have then I'd advice you embark on prayers and fasting praying with your whole heart about the issue, then change the approach with which you study, example, check the best times in which you understand better, by reading at night and in the afternoon, secondly it's not about the duration you've read but rather it's in the amount your brain is able to understand and retain so I'd advice you read in short breaks and then try to see how much you can remember of all you've read. there are a lot more tips I could help you with, if you are really serious about this issue, just send me a private message. meanwhile God bless and help you.
