(yoruba/igbo) Nigeria Politics Ended Our Childhood Friendship Today by handsomenairala: 12:32pm On Apr 12, 2015
We met and became friends in my first year in Secondary School but prior to this meeting, we had met at extra mural classes organised by Ghananians.

We attended one of the best Roman catholic secondary schools in Ondo state and our relationship remained the same ever since we left Secondary school to different tertiary institutions.

After so many years in different directions of life, fate led us to each other on that fateful day; we met again at Barbing Salon in London; exchanged pleasantries and phone numbers. And funny enough, we both attend the same Pentecostal Church.

However, problems started last week when the issue of Oba Akiolu was being blown out of proportion. I went on my Facebook page only to see his Timeline filled up with myopic views/biased write ups about Yorubas and distorted history. I ignored it but my conscience couldn't. I therefore decided to call his attention to what Arthur Eze said about Yorubas in the presence of Goodluck Jonathan and Obi of Onitsha and the Yoruba quiet response to the repulsive and annoying utterances. I told him that as a pastor-to-be; your Timeline has always been used for Evangelism but all of sudden, it has now been turned to a platform to bash Yorubas. I told him to desist from such habit and i moved on with my life.

Unfortunately, he chose not to address or respond to my submission/grievance. He went on his Timeline and bashed me in directly. I read his indirect message on his Timeline, I wanted to talk but I thought there was no need for it and I moved on. To my surprise today, he filled up his Timeline again about how Urhobo, Itshekiri, Ijaws etc should come together against Yorubas and I got upset.

I went on his Timeline and narrated the history of Nigeria which turned out to irritate and upset him. We exchanged words and I advised him to delete me off his friends list for life.

Sad, isn't it?

But life goes on. Thank God I m deleting bigot out of my life.

Your write up is one sided and for the politicians who try to divide Nigeria via religion and ethnicity should try and finish what they have started. As for you i comment my reserve.

We can play politics and disagree over issues but when it comes to tribal related stuffs, we have to be very careful. One thing we lack in this country is understanding and emotional judgement on critical issues rather than rational. If we can get things right, we will solve lots of problems as a country. Ethnoreligios bigotry will never do us any good. That doesn't mean we shouldn't protect our ethnic interest, which must be within the context of civility and sanity.

Sadly, the elite aren't helping things!

one thing I know is that someone( Lucifer) brought enmity between God and men at a time but along the line someone(Jesus) amended the broken relationship between men and God.
Long time ago,our leaders have brought enmity among the tribes for selfish reasons,if we cannot amend the broken relationship ,the next generation will find reasons to do so,and they will reap the fruits of love. #Saynototribalism

their problems are they are always right and always better than others in their myopic eyes.

To them, everything they do must be accepted and anything you do must be castigated.

They are the only hardworking people, others are lazy

They are the only rich people, others are poor,

They are the only successful people, others are useless.

They are the only educated people, others are illiterates.

They are clean, others are dirty (and we all know where the twin cesspit of hell on eart is --aba and onitsha)

They are the only exposed people, others are backward.

The only thing we have not heard from them is that their fathers manhood are bigger than that of others.

All these are borne out of venom of defeat that culminated into hate and inferiority complex.

Comparing Arthur Eze to oba is the height of absurdity. Oba is revered among the yoruba while Eze is a political jobber who sponsors politicians to gain relevance. Outside the cycle of his political associates, he is nobody. Why would u be likening Eze to Oba in order to white-wash Oba's despicable statements.

Do well and read Chimamanda's write-up and u will see why many Igbos are very bitter abt d Oba's statement. He was evoking the memory of the 1966 progrom and u expect the Igbos to just forgive and forget. Thats a very provocative line of thought.

Go to United States, Europe and just try to joke abt killing Jews. Ur entire career and reputation will be finished dat same day. Attempt sumtin similar in Armenia too and see. But its only in Nigeria, the Igbos are expected to forget and move on.

Go and hero-worship ur bigoted oba...u dont deserve the friendship of an Igbo person.

@all, I only got upset not cos I am a Yoruba man but for the fact that this Igbo guy was born and brought up in one of south west cities.

As an Igbo guy, he was entitled to all what I was entitled to as a Yoruba boy while growing up in our neighbourhood. You could imagine how I felt when I read those messages on his Timeline against the same people you drank their water. I felt betrayed and disappointed in him.

Honestly speaking, I didn't even attack him initially, I only made him to see reason why Igbos should not be blowing issues out of proportion. Unfortunately, he played victim mentality first and when he realised that didn't work, he responded by warning me not to respond to his write ups again.

And I told him, as yoruba man, I won't stay here and allow you to talk about my people in that manner. Respect my people and i ll respect yours. However, if you are not comfortable with my historical response to your myopic submissions, pls don't hesitate to do the needy(delete me).

He even bagged his degree in one of the federal universities in south west, can you imagine this same guy betraying us.

OP I truly feel you. Mine happened during the last. Presidential election with a very close friend of mine who's from Akwa-Ibom. We argued bitterly about the result...... She said Yorubas ganged up to kicked Jonathan out of power..... That Jonathan is a good man and he's an hero......... Eeeeeh o, trust me na......I taught her HIS 101.

Fortunately, our friendship withstood it...... That's how powerful politics is......... That's is how much politics have influence over our lives.

Pls, I want you to clarify a point here before the whole thread turn to tribal war.

Why is it that Igbos always deal with Issues from what was done to them as people but not what they Igbos have done to others? Life is all about Igbos bro.

If Igbos could address this, half of Igbos problem with others is half solved my friend.

I m yet to see an Igbo man that is interested in what happened prior to Pogrom in the North.

I am yet to see an Igbo man who is interested in how Northern, western and middle belt leaders were callously killed and maimed.

I m yet to see an Igbo man to address why Aguiyi Ironsi singlehandedly destroyed our well maintained regional system of government.

I m yet to see an Igbo man to address why Igbo formed political alliance with the Northern Oligarchy twice and at the detriment of southern part of the country.

My friend, if someone has done one of these to Igbo people, what would have been your view today?

The problem of Igbo youth today is believing in everything they read from their leaders while you expected others not to believe in what their leaders had told them too. How I will suppose to know the truth? The answer to that question lies in historical books about Nigeria history written by foreign writers.

Pls and pls, have you ever seen the same Chimamanda writing anything against Igbo? No I presumed. Igbos are too perfect you think or she thinks........... open your eyes bro and see the damage your progenitors have done to you guys. If I have four neighbours and the remaining 3 neighbours don't like me for any reason, trust me, I ll look inward and search my soul

You equally said Arthur Eze is a political jobber who should not be taken serious. Can you imagine that my friend, you ll be d one to tell whom others should take serious or not. You see what I am saying.

If Igbos are at liberty to pick Oba Akiolu words, why can't Yorubas pick on your politician's words who is a leader in his own right too

Bro, let's be honest, unbiased and impartial at all time

I just don't know why they are so self centered and so tribalistic any thing not of Igbo origin is not good at all .even here at ABA the trend is even worst getting an accommodation is like hell the moment the realise you are a Yoruba they started speaking there Igbo language then it is over they don't know I understand there languages .it is so bad that most of them the moment you start an argument with them they get aggressive. The trend is so common among them all here in ABA and it really run in there blood. All my colleagues have all gone back to the west finally because the don't feel save at all .the proportion of westerner to easterners here is like 2500 of Igbo to 1yoruba is as bored as hell am thinking of moving out of this forsaken city soon.
