benteke is a 3rd-tier striker.
we need an elite striker - young, pacy, good finisher, etc. we should throw £30m at lacazette. he's the striker with the biggest potential out there. lewandowski would be a steal too.
I don't agree Benteke is 3rd tier, even tho he may not be Man United's level. he'll be someone not gored sitting on the bench here as well as confident enough to fight for his spot & talented enough to grab his chances + he'll not arrive @ an exorbitant fees.

besides there are no top level CFs in the market & we have to keep an eye on our talented academy graduates which is a tradition @ OT & synonymous with LvG's methods. it can't just be buy buy buy like the sugardaddy gluttons!

Wayne Rooney: I’m “ready” to play up front for Man United again

By Ibrahim AkkasPosted on March 2, 2015

Wayne Rooney has insisted that he is capable of playing up front and is more than ready to play in that role for Man United, should Louis van Gaal ask him to start in that position again, reports Man United’s official website.

Rooney, 29, reverted to his more favoured role of playing in the striking position against Sunderland at the weekend.

The decision by Van Gaal to play the Man United skipper in the most advanced role was a wise call against Sunderland, as the England international produced two goals to send the Black Cats packing.

Rooney’s goalscoring form has been critiqued and questioned by many, with some arguing that a player of his quality should be scoring more Premier League goals this season.

But the England skipper isn’t too fussed, claiming his goal record shows he scores more often than not.

Rooney said: “Everyone knows I’ve played midfield for the majority of the season but my record shows that I score goals so I’m not worried about that at all

“I was obviously pleased that the manager played me up front and I was delighted to get the two goals but the victory was the main thing today because after last week [when United lost to Swansea] it was important that we bounced back.”

Against Sunderland – Rooney had a 80% shot accuracy
Furthermore, Rooney was also asked whether he’d like to carry on playing as a striker for Man United, the 29-year-old revealed he’s ready to play in the role again.

Rooney said: “Well, that’s down to the manager. I’ve said before that it’s his decision and I respect his decision, wherever he wants to play me.

“I’ve played there throughout my career so obviously I know how to play up front. So I’m ready to play there if and when he wants me to do it.”

So far this season, Rooney has bagged ten Premier League goals in 23 league outings. Furthermore, the England international has also been an creative force too. The 29-year-old has created 36 chances, assisting four times. Only Angel Di Maria (44) has created more than Rooney at Man United this season.

The Red Devils’ next game is a potentially awkward clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday evening.

Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao led the line after Louis van Gaal's claims of not having a reliable striker

On the surface, it looked like the old Manchester United. It was a formation which was as close to 4-4-2 as you can get in the modern game. The wingers, Ashley Young and Angel Di Maria, were playing as wide as they could and there were two recognised strikers, in Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao up front.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2973519/Manchester-United-2-0-Sunderland-Wayne-Rooney-answers-calls-reliable-striker.html

Another daily mailreport, this time it's analysis:

Keep Wayne Rooney up front
Van Gaal recently bemoaned his lack of a 20-goals-a-season striker. He already has one, he has just not played him in the right position for long chunks of the campaign.
It is no surprise that Rooney's return to a striking role has coincided with more goals from the England man who averages more than the 20 Van Gaal craves in a red shirt.

Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m):
Between January 20th and March 11th, Costa went through these 7 consecutive matches without scoring a goal. Yet Rooney only missed one match without scoring and someone wants to die. Rooney even Assisted sef- against City giant defenders that can pocket a striker.

Liverpool 1 - 1 Chelsea
Chelsea 1 - 0 Liverpool
Paris St-G. 1 - 1 Chelsea
Chelsea 1 - 1 Burnley
Chelsea 2 - 0 Tottenham
West Ham 0 - 1 Chelsea
Chelsea 2 - 2 Paris St-G.

In 2012/13, between January 30th and April 8th, RVP went 13 straight matches with just one goal scored against Everton. He went the last 10 below without scoring. Yet this was RVP at his scoring peak.

Man Utd 2 - 1 Southampton
Fulham 0 - 1 Man Utd
Man Utd 2 - 0 Everton
Real Madrid 1 - 1 Man Utd
Man Utd 2 - 1 Reading
QPR 0 - 2 Man Utd
Man Utd 4 - 0 Norwich
Man Utd 1 - 2 Real Madrid
Man Utd 2 - 2 Chelsea
Man Utd 1 - 0 Reading
Sunderland 0 - 1 Man Utd
Chelsea 1 - 0 Man Utd
Man Utd 1 - 2 Man City

* I ask again, why do some guys here hate Rooney so much? Even Harry Kane they shout about, we saw him and Rooney pair against Italy, Kane didn't look like scoring or doing anything meaningful even if the match was extended for another 500 minutes. Scoring in the closing stages of the season is usually hard for renowned strikers who are targeted for serious marking, particularly when it involves solid defenders from big teams.

* BinghiNya / Nyabinghi , hope you can see why I argue heavily sometimes. A striker has to play a full season in striking position before he can hit 25 goals plus because there will be ups and downs in the strikers work on the field. Period of free scoring and period of drought.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 9:32am On Apr 14, 2015
In that 13 match period of RVP drought in 2012/13, Rooney scored 6 goals playing in the number 10 and in the wing. Just a similar thing Mata and Herrera are doing for us now when Rooney may not score.

EPL
Man Utd 2 - 1 Southampton.......... 2 goals Wayne Rooney.
2 goals 2
EPL
Fulham 0 - 1 Man Utd.................. 1 goal Wayne Rooney
EPL
Man Utd 2 - 0 Everton
UCL
Real Madrid 1 - 1 Man Utd
EPL
QPR 0 - 2 Man Utd
EPL
Man Utd 4 - 0 Norwich ............ 1 goal Wayne Rooney, 2 Assist.
UCL
Man Utd 1 - 2 Real Madrid ..........Played as a 2nd half sub in a 10-man United.
FA
Man Utd 2 - 2 Chelsea................Rooney 1 goal.
EPL
Man Utd 1 - 0 Reading............ Rooney 1 goal
EPL
Man Utd 1 - 2 Man City

He could have made it 7 or 8 goals if he was not unselfish to give Kagawa an assist where he was clear to score himself. Football is a team work. When we should be happy that we are doing well now, some people love starting problems and shortliving our celebrations. Rooney is doing a good team play and handling defenders well. He is not bullied off the ball and his movements distracts the central defenders.

so all of a sudden, you have now realised dailymail get their feeds from opta? if they do, why did you say you read something different from dailymail & goal.com? lying is your hobby.

rooney played in the hole - he was glad the manager played him in the striker role after falcao departed the pitch. that was the first time this year he had been played in that role & he was glad the manager did. until then, the media were on his back that he hadn't taken a shot on target in 2015 in the league.

pay attention to details.....& FFS, stop lying.

The 29-year-old said, “No, not at all. Everyone knows I've played midfield for the majority of the season but my record shows that I score goals so I'm not worried about that at all.
“I was obviously pleased that the manager played me up front and delighted to get the two goals. I respect his decision wherever he wants to play me. Hopefully I can kick on from here.”
