Dear Nlanders, just took delivery of 1996 camry. The car is good except that it is overheating. I am divided between those who say I should yank off the thermostat and those who think I should change the radiator altogether. A couple of people also feel I should just give the radiator a good wash. Wise ones, please help.

Removing the thermostat from any car isn't a good idea. It simply masks an underlying issue. Have the system pressure tested - an overheating engine could be caused by a myriad of problems - blown head gasket, cracked cylinder head / block, thermostat stuck in the shut position, a clogged radiator, inoperative cooling fan or even the wrong fuel / spark plug grade.

Removing the thermostat will simply make the engine over cool, which is bad. It will increase fuel consumption, as the engine CTS (coolant temperature sensor) will assume the engine's not up to normal operating temperature, and simply inject more fuel in. This will cause premature engine wear, as the excess fuel will wash the oil from the cylinder bores (bore wash).

Get your car checked by a competent engineer, and I don't mean the masquerades by the roadside, who don't know one end of a spanner from the other. Best of luck.

Matey, You are tooooo good. You certainly know your onions.

No fellow can take that away from you.

About time you should really look into "Siena Autocentre Nigeria"  wink   wink

@Siena, I am grateful and proud of you. Will try to clean up the radiator at the car wash first. If the problem persists, I will look for a competent mechanic as you advised.

There is nothing or need to clarify.

My Perspective on my thread has'nt been solely defined as a wrong practice.

Removing the thermostat is clearly a common practice all over the world, Because something is a common practise, does'nt mean it is correct and vice versa does'nt mean it is wrong.

Sienna, A fully qualified auto professional has clearly enlightened us collectively,  my not conflicting with Sienna and concuring with what he's said clearly reflects my positive acknowledgement with his advice.

Life is a learning curve, new ideas, techiques and philosophy's are imbibed and inculcated each day.

I use a Toyota Avensis 1998 model imported from Iceland. A mechanic had the thermostat removed about 1 year ago. I however noticed that anytime it rains and water splashes on the underside of the car, the engine splutters. It actually stalled on 1 day and the engine over flooded. What do I do? Siena and others, pls help out

I would reinstall the thermostat, then service the radiator, by flushing and adding some additives which seal radiator leaks.

The mechanics in naija, for the most part are illiterates and often times, take things out of cars saying things like ' the car doesn't need it'. Why did the car manufacturer install the part? Things that make you wonder.

Please don't let any mechanic take out parts from your cars!

After reading this thread i checked my car, honda accord 94 ('bullet') 2.0 le, and realized my thermostat had been removed. I've been unable to find a place to buy one in benue so far. And i also realized my fans both start turning once i turn on the ignition. sadAfter reading this thread i checked my car, honda accord 94 ('bullet') 2.0 le, and realized my thermostat had been removed. If you are talking about the cooling system "radiator" thermostat, don't even think about removing it. Contrary to popular myth, the thermostat sets the minimum temperature that the engine operates at, not the maximum. The maximum operating temperature is a function of engine ouput (load) and how well designed and maintained the cooling system is. On almost all modern cars, the cooling system has plenty of "overhead" to manage heat disipation under even the worst conditions. This is a direct result of the heat/cold driving cycle testing requirments for modern emission controlled engines.

If you remove the thermostat, the engine will run at a variable temperature and on a modern car this is usually too cold because of the large cooling capacities. This temperature is unlikely to be that which is required for proper operation of the engine management system. The end result of this is likely to be radically increased fuel consumption because of the Automatic Choke staying open for longer periods while it waits for the engine to fully warm up, greater emissions, and the setting of MIL or CEL "fault" conditions in the ECU. If the system runs rich for a long period of time, it can also cause a pehenomenon known as cylinder oil scrubbing in which the rich fuel/air mixture "scrubs" the oil off of the cylinder walls, resulting in premature piston/ring/cylinder wear and engine failure.

If you are experiencing high temps, change the thermostat, as it may not be opening all the way or may be stuck in a partially open position causing the high temps. Also carry out a coolant pressure test and check if your cooling fans are working properly.

Your Mecho is another roadside monkey, change your mechanic, or will he claim that cars in Southern USA (Texas, Florida etc) have their thermostats removed. Really it's like we are talking to ourselves in here.

The people who designed and built the car put a thermostat in it, they test their cars in the hottest and coldest climates on earth, the cars leave the factories with thermostats. Baba roadside says remove it, that the Oyingbo's don't know anything, come on guys, who is more qualified to make that decision, The builders and designers or the roadside mecho?

DO NOT REMOVE YOUR THERMOSTATS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.cartalk.com/content/you-should-never-ever-remove-thermostat

The thermostat is just a valve that goes between the engine and the radiator. It's purpose is to keep the engine at the proper operating temperature. When the engine gets too hot, the thermostat opens up and lets the engine coolant flow through the radiator, where it cools off. When the engine is too cool, the thermostat closes and stops the coolant from flowing through the radiator, so the engine heats back up.

But taking out the thermostat can actually do quite a bit of damage on a modern car. Most cars now have computers, which constantly monitor the engine temperature and adjust things accordingly. If the computer thinks the engine is cold--and it WILL be cold without a thermostat--it'll richen the fuel mixture. That will lead to poor mileage, carbon buildup, and eventually, a $400 repair bill for a new catalytic converter.

I just changed my engine ( Toyota Camry 2001v6) and since it has been overheating. My mechanic already removed the thermostat when he fixed the engine. I have washed the radiator, changed the radiator cap but still the same. When it overheats the temp gauge wild have gone beyond the half mark, the coolant reservoir would have gone pass the max limit, even filling the container and boiling seriously. Pls need expert advise. Thanks

My radiator and A/C fans starts immediately the engine is switched on. I bought a used car with this setting. Now I want to revert to factory setting, what will I explain to the mechanic or rewire to do, since It seems they are not well groomed on modern engine technology
Thanks

Few months ago (I think 3 months), there was this under Mango Tree mechanic workshop not far from my office (those who have been to my office would know the place). I was passing and I saw a Toyota Sienna (1st generation) they were working on. I saw a tokunbo engine on the ground and saw the mechanic with his boys trying to remove the old (probably dead engine) from the engine bay. What caught my attention was the used (tokunbo) engine on the ground they wanted to swap in. The thermostat housing was removed and I saw the thermostat on the ground, near the engine. Meaning, they just signed the death warrant of the newly purchased engine even before it was mounted in the car.

Sometime in February this year, I drove to Kubwa (not really Kubwa, but somewhere near Kubwa which I have forgotten the name) to troubleshoot a lady's French car. While I was waiting for her to come and pick me up where I got stuck because I couldn't the street name she gave me, I spotted another Under Mango Tree Mechanic Workshop close to where I parked my SV D9. A Toyota Yaris Sedan, 2nd generation, with bonnet opened. I got curious, not because they were working on the Yaris, but because I saw the Yaris transmission on the ground. So I got close. I realized that the car had auto transmission replacement. So the newly purchased one ( probably a tokunbo) was already in. What I saw next shocked me. The ATF they refilled the purchased auto transmission with. The brand is "Kings", I think. At least I know that oil. It cost about N300 or so and its locally made, which Taxi drivers use for topping up their Power steering system. Now, someone suffered auto transmission failure headache, spent huge amount of money, bought another transmission and then kill it before he or she even started using it. Like the other, he signed the death warrant for the transmission on day 1.

Now, who would you blame on those two above? The mechanics or the vehicle owners? The mechanics? Really? I don't think so.

If I would suffer such nightmare of losing an engine or transmission, probably borrow money or empty my saving to replaced the failed engine or transmission, I would be careful of what goes inside the transmission or what goes out of the engine, so that what happened before wouldn't repeat itself, at least, in the near future.

Giving mechanic money to buy ATF he thinks its ok for your transmission and just walk away, pending when he calls you to come and pick the car when the gearbox replacement is concluded, doesn't show seriousness on ones part. Not being their when your newly purchased engine is been swapped in doesn't show seriousness of the vehicle owner either. So for one to say "the mechanics did all that because the owners were not there", doesn't follow. Why?

To get a man to do something for you, just admire and praise his car in his presence or before him. Then consider your request granted. But talk down on his car, then better find another person for that favor you seek. No matter how happy looking or old a man's car is, he wants his car to turn heads or least, "It makes sense, isn't it?".

Now if thats how we feel about our cars, why then do we treat them the way we do, yet expect them not to embarrass us before others? You may say, "After all, they are piece of metals." But when your fellow man wash down your car with negative remarks , you will put your 36 in your mouth into action, looking for who to eat alive.

My point is, we all know how to take care of our women, by not letting another man into it. Why then should that other thing that gives you joy be left in another man's care.

Give attention to a little part of you which is your car. A vehicle is not some smartphones or some electronics you can use anyhow and get away it. A car determines if you live to breath the next moment or not. If you treat it carelessly, it ends your life the next moment. If you cherish and handle it like it meant something to you, it will keep you safe, by bringing yu back alive everything you drive out with it. Its a choice, you the owner has to make yourself.

Leave your thermostat where it is and replace it when it fails. It's your call.

You know I am into Lions. So I wouldn't know what your thermostat looks like, let alone know if it would be available here in Abuja. But for Lions, I know for sure, all their engine cooling system thermostats are very much available in Abuja and even know what they look like and their locations in the engines.

Notwithstanding, will ask around and get back to you.

As for your fan, it won't make much sense to reinstall thermostat without reverting that abused fan connection to factory. With the fan spinning constantly, will the thermostat do its job at the time its supposed to? I don't think so. Why? Because the fan will keep cooling both the radiator and engine, preventing the engine to get hot and thermostat to do its job. Unfortunately, I am not in Uyo to revert it for you, because one has to see the nonsense connected to know how to deal with it. Though, with wiring schematic, you can actually do it yourself.

I have Corolla AE100 96auto. I found that Thermostat was removed by previous mechanic. 3 years im driving without thermostat. Most of the times temperature meter readings below the half line. After long drive it reach to the half level.

I live in Sri Lanka and my mechanic instruct me to install new thermostat. Now its always at the half line of the temperature meter. But i found some Radiator leakage and went for radiator mechanic. He advise me to remove the Thermostat valve immediately. He said its not needed the country like us.

So i told this incident to my USA friend Handawala and he instruct me to keep the thermostat and find a good Radiator guy.

I surf this thread and learn lots of things about Thermostat. Thanx all for your valuable comments.
