Who is weeping over this ? The population and landmass are not the same. We should be realistic and forget about sentiments. All we need to e together is love and sincerity. |

barcanista: People in south of Nigeria have been taken to be mugus. They have been holding like a Bible or Quaran a 36 states+Abuja political structure created by northern soldiers to make southerners become followers of what north dictates in Nigeria. In the 36 states+Abuja political structure, 19 states and Abuja were proliferated in the one time one northern region, but in one time three southern regions, only17 states were created. But land mass or population is never used in any federal country to create new federating units, except in Nigeria. New federating units are supposed to have emerged as equal multiples of the federating units that existed when new ones started to be created. Soldiers in the US cannot just rise and divide large states like California or Texas into many more states to get more revenues to California or Texas areas as well as have more legislators for the areas in the US Congress. Three Senators are derived flat from every Nigerian state, one from Abuja. Therefore in the National Assembly, old northern Nigeria is overwhelmingly over-represented in the National Assembly. To amend the 1999 constitution also supervised by northern soldiers, all the 36 states Houses of Assembly must have an input. In other words, the 1999 constitution can only be amended when the amendment is pleasing northern political desires. But this is a country of northern and southern Nigeria when amalgamated by the British in 1999. The 36 states+Abuja political structure made south of Nigeria a semi-colony of the north and through which northerners can use their over-reprentation in all aspects of the polity to manipulate the south at will to get whatever north wants done on Nigeria's political terrain. Obasanjo started reforms of the polity and political restructuring of this lopsided political structure through his National Political Reforms Conference, but third term ambition ended it. No body could expect late Yar'Adua to embark on political reforms and restructuring. The political system and bad structure make his north take home most of the country's revenues and make final decisions on political development as well as who must be president of Nigeria. GEJ is not believed to have a clear understanding of the fact that Nigeria's political system and structure were made by undemocratic means, therefore needed remaking by a democratic means. At last when it was too late, GEJ inaugurated a CONFAB for political reforms and restructuring. The CONFAB carried our political reforms and above all, restrured the polity such that if the restructuring is implemented, it shall diminish the inequality in political representation between the north and south of Nigeria. One can still remember Jonathan last February begging people in Lagos to vote him so as to have the next National Assembly implement the resolution of the CONFAB, because according to GEJ, the outgoing NASS is hostile to the CONFAB. The rest is history. |

barcanista:The bolded sounds hypocritical. Don't get me wrong though. Because you don't seem to realize that you're not solving any problem, simply morphing it. I am from a minority tribe in the SS - Delta state to be precise, and I'll rather remain in Nigeria fighting for resource control within the current system than advocating for a change in system, or even secession. 4 Likes |

Thank you. I had expected Jonathan to make for a framework that will make the final report of the confab to be subjected to UN supervised referendum. Even at the Confab, delegates from non-SS/SE states rejected the 50% derivation demand. They instead insulted our sensibilities by proposing 18% for the mineral producing areas and 5% for "insurgency areas". This the South rejected and no agreement was eventually reached. Subjecting that report to NASS really got me upset mandax: 1 Like |

barcanista: No northerners were ordained by God to perpetuate inequality that exists in Nigeria. The errors made by the southerners who later advised Gowon to discard Aburi Accord led south of Nigeria to the ugly situation south has been in since the late 1960s. Southerners that later joined northern soldiers to fight Biafra worsened the situation for the south. If Biafra had survived, and Oduduwa Republic perhaps emerged, today's south of Nigeria would have been the best developed areas in Africa. After the war, northerners were victors, they divided old villages and hamlets in the north into Local government areas, and use them to draw Nigeria's oil revenues to north. War victorious soldiers of north also created undue large number of states in the far north which gave rise to undue large number of Senators and House of Rep members to far north. With this, the far north can always manipulate its satellite states in rest of north to spurn any amendment in the constitution created to favour north. About three years ago, Gen. Gowon who started state creation in Nigeria lamented that state creation was eventually hijacked to create a super political class in Nigeria - unarguably, in the far north. The too many northern states also give rise to too many undue legislative Houses and federal legislators for the far north. The north's too many legislative houses and too many legislators guarantee that the NASS can afford to make only cosmetic amendments to the 1999 Constitution tailored by northern soldiers to suit north of Nigeria's political machinery. The 1999 constitution was hurriedly drawn to legalize the semi-illegal and rigged political structure. So you see, south of Nigeria literally took steps that make its people now accept to be subjects of northern Nigeria in one Nigeria. 7 Likes 2 Shares |
