If I know what lies after death, I would have committed suicide. I sweated before obtaining my B.Tech. by doing menial jobs. Now after NYSC, I can't find a meaningful job. I'm currently teaching 7 subjects in a secondary sch earning 10k per month. I live with a relative and feed with that meagre salary. The major problem now is that I always fall sick. I have medical history of typhoid but after taking powerful antibiotics that doctors often recomend for me, there is still no improvement. I've taken HIV test many times with negative results. From my observation as a biotechnology student, what ravage my immune system might be chronic imflamatory bowel disease and thyrotoxicosis(confirmed in a test but can't pursue treatment). Dt IBD may require surgery. I summarily dwell on herbs. I can no longer try menial jobs that can fetch me quick money in those sch days due the weakness of my body. My friends that learnt trade or workmanship are making jest of me cos they are making it big. There is nothing you can tell me about religion that won't fall on deaf ears. Because I know the scriptures up and down. I even pastored a Redeemed Church branch during my NYSC days.

And there I was thinking that earning N10,500 monthly for teaching 3 subjects in a secondary school was a harsh predicament.

It was indeed harsh though.

Hopefully the situation will change in the nearest future and graduates of our tertiary institutions will be able to have their desired career.

She graduated with 1st Class. She actually came for the role of marketing. Had to confront her cos I was short of words. When I heard her story, I just had to curse this country. This is a lady that is extremely hard-working plus a nerd. This was a year after our NYSC.

And do u know what it means to be under-employed Please ask around for clarification. Quote me anywhere, 60-70% of graduates are under-employed. Do u think its favourable? Think of the transport cost, feeding, expenses to keep up wit then lastly family pressure Especially if u work in a city.

By the way, help is needed in writing ur CV. U need a professional touch to it which u cant clearly know since u arent in the HR dept And neither is it something u study in school.

Dont just sit down and talk thrash when u have no idea of what the situation is. Fine some graduates could be lazy but thats a little percentage to the total number of the unemployed.

Bro, employment is not always by good grades(only in Naija do we value grades than skill),but also by that skill that makes you outstanding out of the multitude. I know first class that are unemployed (trust me....it baffles me),and I still have the ones doing very well.

I believe a big part of getting a job is actually being employable. Employers need to know what makes you special among a sea of other candidates and you need to prove your worth to them. Previous experience is an example of something that can help to put your foot in the door; having a first class degree is another example.

To put it simply, your CV should answer the question, "why should we employ you?".

Although I'm still in first year and don't have any major qualifications, I'm taking advantage of all the student jobs available. I've represented Nigeria in an international competition, just finished working as a student ambassador, about to begin working as a STEM ambassador (I study Computer Science). At the very least I can say my CV isn't blank.

You are on the right track my friend. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

I just look back to my era of job hunting and only what I can say is thank you lord for today.... I remember the tears that flows through my eyes each time I pray asking God for job opportunity,now I have jobs searching for me everywhere..For those seeking for employment brace up and put your trust in God, he never fails...

Exactly, that's what I've been saying. It's not enough to have just a degree (even a first class degree) and no other skills. The lady the other poster mentioned who had a first class degree and was applying for customer care role may not have had good communication skills, enough commercial awareness or whatever the employers are looking for.

Good grades will definitely give one an edge but it's not enough to make one employable.

Going through this thread, I must say that it's really a pity the travails many of our youths are going through due to unemployment.

The way I see it, the problem is not just that there's massive unemployment in the land. We even face a greater problem because so many of our youths don't even have any idea what to do to save the situation.

I blame our school system in this regard for not adequately preparing our students for the grim situation that awaits them after graduation.

Well, all hope is not lost. Something can still be done to salvage the dire situation. A solution must be found.

Once upon a time – in the last few years – you had thought getting a college degree would secure you a better job and a brighter future. On matriculation day, the level of your elation knew no bounds. Well-wishers
congratulated you. You were happy, not because of the
intended occupation but because you felt your ‘future
meal ticket’ was somewhat guaranteed.

Prior to your induction into the varsity, you
wanted to study the covetous profession, yet the
institution admitted you to study another line of work
because of some factors beyond your discernment. You
were pained. Family and friends consoled you; they
chorused the apocryphal mantra: “it is the certificate

Enployment is a very bad experience but what helped( and has continued to date) is that I'm not very good at being idle. There's a certain psychological pleasure and emotional satisfaction I derive from labour.

Unemployment is pain in d ass, d worst is dat u can't say exactly wen it 'll end. Always hoping it shall end one day. B4 now, I was tinkn its me alone dat was going true dis truma of unemplyment untill dis tread was created nd many ve shared different xpences dey re going tru.
