Are Some Sins Weightier Than Others? by Nobody: 7:06am On May 17, 2015
Its a common phenomenon these days to see a father beat his son for stealing and the father writes 7:45am in the office time book the following morning after checking his wrist watch and the time is 8:10. We will see wives, calling the husband an adulterer(which he is truly) but the wife inflates price for her boss at work. We will see people beating and killing a murderer or a kidnapper where as these same people gossips, are bittered or holding somebody in un forgiveness.

My question now is that do some sins carry more weight than others? Are the big sin of murder and the small sin of jealousy or small slander, of the same weight?

There are two types of sin, Mortal Sin and Venial sin.

MORTAL: killing, ritual, Adultery etc.
VENIAL: unconscious lies, sins in your thoughts, quarrel etc

The former has weight more than the latter.

What matters are the deepest drivers of someone...only God can evaluate them and say something about the weight of the sin, related to the specific characteristics, context and possibilities of a person....

In general, I think that every sin is to a certain degree a contribution to evil. The problem is more based in that contribution than in a particular act...hence I wont bother about weighting sins...and consider every tendency to contribute to evil willingly and knowingly as bad.

venial sins leads to purgatory while mortal sins without repentance before death leads someone straight to hell.
