@abdulumar, melange is size after Jumbo. Some say 4-5months from Hatching. 2-3months from post fingerlings. An average of btw 300g - 500g will pass as Melange. Tnx

I will advice you replace topfeed with vital feed.. multifeed and zeilger are in high demand also.

I have 1500 fish of 12weeks old and I am running out of cash though I still have 250k but I doubt if it will be enough for their feeding. I started with Aqua and later changed to durantee but I am using vital feed 4mm now. their growth are now even because I have only one pond but there is constant run water ( in & out). I heard of local feed but the person using it beside my pond is not encouraging because my fish is bigger than his. I want to ask if anyone has any experience with durantee local feed or if there is a way a can get cheaper already prepared local feed that I can use to get better result. my pond is in Osogbo, Osun State. Ur fishes are about 3months now, the 250K you have with you now shd feed them into their fourth month and possibly longer. Whats the average size of your fish now and how many times a day do u feed them?

#as per local feed, i use it but im a bit biased towards it bcoz u can never be too sure of the ingredients... Most times they are adulterated or the workers at the mill do not add d ingredients as u specified and in d long run u end up spending more while ur fishes wont do as well as if u were using the bagged floating feeds. Durante local feed is very good. .. Top feeds is also good and its one of the cheapest in the market now; about N4200 per 15kg bag and its locally made in Nigeria.

Vital feed will sell fast as Oga Robonski pointed out, but Top Feeds is gaining popularity now... Its cheaper and also a good feed.

For four months and with the increase in price of fish feed and ingredients, you are looking at around N250 per fish. Its not definite.

I will like to know if there is anyone currently using Top feed in the house. it is been sold for N3900 in Osogbo compare to Vital feed of 4500 but I don't just want to go for it because of low price without knowing its effect on the growth of fish. Thanks.

Hello sir, one thing I usually tell first timers is to start small, fish farming is beyond digging ponds and stocking large amount of fishes. first learn some management techniques with some fishes before you expand. 30k fishes is way too much sir I must be honest with you.

If you have a good swampy area for earthen pond I will advice you start with two earthen ponds 40ft by 45ft with a depth of 4 feet each , though it will contain 5000 fishes comfortably but stock 2k in each pond for a start then start learning the management techniques as members of the house drop some info to guide you, then you can expand after harvest.

I Have never used top feed before so I cant give a proper judgment.. Pls who is currently using topfeed in the house should tell us about it.

When i go and get fingerlings, will i put them in the fish pond straight, after disinfecting them tho, and what feed grade will i start with? and how will i change the grades per month till they reach maturity? how will i feed them per month, hw many times per day? Concerning the sorting, what month after stocking will i sort the fishes, and do you mean i will need extra pond to put the sorted fishes into? how should i be changing the water? Am so much of a novice abt it. Waiting for your keen reply.

@Olamitisoji, I believe you should have a successful consultant before you embark on such Large scale project. Cos without experience, you might just be making a fellow Man smiling to the bank while u count your Loss. Hope you aware that you would might spend minimum of #7million naira on feeding alone.

With all these questions you have asked sir and d way u asked them, honestly i dont think you should do more than just 500 fishes to start with as a pilot project to gain experience and learn frm ur mistakes, and even after ur first batch of just 500 fishes, u wont be ready for 30,000 fishes so i will advise dat u expand very gradually and cautiously. Doing 30,000 now is a NO NO for you unless you want to just waste ur hard earned money. Even if u av d resources to build 10 big ponds and stock huge numbers and even if u are getting a consultant or experienced farm manager; it will be good for u to knw much abt fish farming. It doesnt mean u shd jump into it d way u wanna do it.
