We should be more concerned about the stated fact.
No bank pay their core staff less than N2m/annum.
No bank? Now you lack fact

The minimum wage for an average Nigerian worker who puts 8hrs a day should be 240,000 Naira.
Re: My Take On The Slave Labor In Nigerian Banks - Cramjones by paparazzi1987(m): 8:14am On May 20, 2015
This is a big joke. No bank pays its entry level below 100K.
I am a banker and I can testify to this claim.
Re: My Take On The Slave Labor In Nigerian Banks - Cramjones by socialmediaman: 8:15am On May 20, 2015
Yeah, but I personally feel the wage snd labour system should be reviewed completely and wages should be recalculated per hour, and shift work should be implemented. I personally feel our leaders are not just thinking. In the USA for instance, 40hrs is the normal working time per week, anything more than that is calculated as overtime. if you work more than 40hrs per week, the extra hours is calculated by 1.5 multiplied by your original salary. For instance, if you earn $10 per hour and work for 60hrs per week, the first 40hrs is calculated as $40 x 10 = 400. The rest 20hrs is calculated as overtime, that is, 20hrs x 15 = 300. So you'll earn 400 + 300 = $700. If not for the overtime law, your pay would've been 60hrs x 10 = $600.

So my point here is that because employers don't want to pay more money, they split the work between 2 different people, that is, one person works 40hrs, the other works 20hrs, or 30hrs each as they choose. In doing this, they have created 2 jobs instead of one, and they have already set a standard, that is, every entry employee starts with a minimum wage, not like some people earning N200,000 while some earn N40,000 on the same entry level position with the same qualification

All employers should be meant to buy time sheets which their employees can use to punch in/out and their salaries should be calculated by hours put in weekly or bi-weekly as the case may be.

dunkem21:

I agree with you ..It depends on the type of contract you hold, though.

Some earn commissions based on the inflows and transactions from their customers(Marketers) while some have fixed pay which is in the limit of N40k as rightly pointed out.

The contract agreement should be reviewed in all banks to ensure equity and fairness ..even if it means reducing the remuneration of 'core staff' to bridge this gap.

I read about the pay scale of bankers in Nigeria with deep and utter sadness. I haven't been able to sleep since I read the stories on Nairaland, for I have been deeply disturbed. Prior to these articles, I erroneously thought that entry level bankers earn nothing less than 120k, but I was very wrong! My nephew is banker, but he keeps asking me to send him money. I joke about it, albeit ignorantly, not knowing his pay is that of a slave.

Fellow Nigerians, granted we have over 50 million unemployed youths, nevertheless should we accept to be slaves in our own country? What will a young man full of life and energy do with 24k/month or $110 per month. I can remember many times I have spent such an amount one night on a family dinner. This is not fair and must be stopped! We must task the incoming administration to review our labor laws. It is unacceptable for a graduate working in a multibillion dollar coporation as a banker to earn less than $4/day.

Instead of trekking from pillar to post, do something about it! I would like to urge all youths to use the power of social media and spread the word. We must start that way. I will do my part by telling the C-in-C to tackle this slave labor head on. Not just the banks, but we must have enforcable laws that all employers of labor must abide to. Little wonder why Kelechi and Kayode are doing drugs in Indonesia. Little wonder why Ifeoma, Kabiru and Femi are drowning in the mediterranean trying to cross to Europe. We must put an end to modern day slavery, wickedness and greed!

You have all taken the right step by revealing it. Now make it popular and we will work on the one-on-one side. This must stop!

You should have mentioned the amount that contract staff earn, they're graduates also and some of them earn as low as 40k or so, not for a shift work, but full time work

Not all contract staff are graduate.
Moreover, marketing, dse, trainee jobs are not meant for Bsc holders.

That is true. Are we saying the contract staff are not bankers as well? What makes them different several of them have the same qualification as the core staff some even more but due to unemployment challenges they take the job.Are they not doing work in the bank? Some doing same duties as the so called bankers.Lets put ourselves in their shoes its not fair to them.

The first thing that the federal government must do is to ban all these job outsourcing companies. They share the money that should be paid to contract staff

The banks are even better. Those who are worse at this slavery of a thing are owners of one man business. Where they are lord almighty.

They way and manner this people behave is appalling. The think and believe you're nothing. They will even threaten and insult you beyond reason and tell you if they fire you and put vacancy outside, within the tinkle of an eye you'll see many applicants file in.

And the amount the pay is just too worrisome. Some graduates even earn as low as 15,000 per month and the work from 9-5, Monday to Saturday. Cramjones, I tell you that the banks are really better than these bastards...

I pray the C in C listen to you and do something about this. Its high time graduates get respected in this country.

Obviously not true, are you really serious or being mischievous? Marketing jobs are done by bsc holders all over the world, and I also want to say this, many graduates are doing contract staff jobs and even work in the bulk counting rooms of banks who earn some of the least. So yes, there are graduates who are earning so low in banks

Get your facts right, bro.

Entry level in any Nigerian bank earns above N120k...
..Contract and support staff earn less though.

Entry level to earn >N120k? That must be level 10 you are talking of here. I strongly doubt that.
Usually they start from 70k and above (depends on the bank)

nice write up. It is high time we youth use power of social media to send the message accross to the in-coming govt. Most banks(employers e.g telecom)have the core staff but contracts staff are more in numbers in order for the banks to cut costs.

The banks pays the labaour unions yearly or monthly so that they can enjoy their trade. We jus need to change our ways.

Another annoying thing , is the pension money they deducted from monthly salary, if u are disengaged or resigned, u are entitle to 25% within six month of disengament, the remaining, u will be reciving alert every month but u cant access it till u r 50yrs old. My question is , wht is our labour union thinking of b4 signing it? As so my ppl need money to start personal biz....pls let us talk to them ooo

I think you just like attention. Please research these nonsense you write. An Entry level salary is about 180k on the average. It's above 210k for some popular banks, actually.

The OP specifically mentioned 'entry level'. Contract staff are just that...contract. There is a big difference in pay. Some special contract people earn much more than the core staff though..depends on the work.

Even the so called minimum wage of 18k must be looked into. It always baffles me when I think of workers earning 18k, or even less or a little above; how do thse people manage their lives? Bosses earn close to million/month while junior staff less than 20k and they both have family responsibilities, I think the gap is too wide. Hopefully, the incoming adminstration will look into this callous 18k minimum wage and rectify ,review it so as to meet todays man needs.
