Ozil does this often, even for Germany. ............................. United shape Moyes changed his system completely for this game, and seemed to start with a 4-3-3. This is the first time he’s played this formation with United in the Premier League, and seemed to be a response to City’s system – probably to deny Yaya Toure space and time on the ball. Fellaini was tasked with stopping him in the opening stages, although came out second best, at one point clearly not having the physicality to knock Toure off the ball. Cleverley continues to look nervous in possession and positionally he was uncertain – although he shared that with manyof his teammates. Silva United’s new shape backfired spectacularly, however, because the formation allowed David Silva all the space he required to dominate the opening ten minutes. He darted either side of Michael Carrick from his number ten role, continually collecting the ball in those pockets and using the ball in a quick, efficient and unspectacular manner. He rarely threaded through-balls behind the defence, but instead played neat passes, often out towards the flanks, and increased the pressure upon the Manchester United defence. The way he collected the ball and darted through the United backline in the opening minute was superb, and resulted in the opener – after Silva was denied by Rafael’s excellent last-ditch tackle, Samir Nasri found space away from Rafael and his shot rebounded to Dzeko for a tap-in. The only criticism of Silva is that he doesn’t win games himself often enough. He was the best attacking player on show by a distance, dictating the tempo and flow of the game, but didn’t quite produce a genuinely defence-splitting pass, or provide a significant goal threat. Indeed, his fabulous recent strike at Hull was his only goal in the last 20 games, and it’s this lack of individual matchwinning ability that prevents him being regarded as one of the very best in Europe. His ability to facilitate the attacks of others, however, is unquestionable. - Zonal Marking.

More on ZM. Chelsea 3-3 Aston Villa January 2, 2011 Gerard Houllier used Gabriel Agbonlahor on the left, with Ashley Young playing off Emile Heskey. Ciaran Clark started at left-back, and Carlos Cuellar returned at right-back. Houllier tactics work well That said, Villa were the better side in the opening period, and credit should go to Houllier for his starting line-up. Not only did Villa prevent Chelsea from playing, they were also positive and direct when they had the ball, and took the game to Carlo Ancelotti’s side for the majority of the half. Houllier’s tactics worked well. He left out Marc Albrighton, a promising young player but one who remains suspect defensively (see his mistake for John Terry’s goal in the 89th minute) in order to play Agbonlahor and Stewart Downing. Downing played on the right and tracked Ashley Cole up and down the line very well (much like Kieran Richardson did when Sunderland played 3-0 at Stamford Bridge) and nullified Cole as an attacking threat. ........ Young finds space Young had a good game, taking advantage of the fact that Chelsea were lacking a true holding player – Essien is not at his best there – to drift across the pitch into space. The best part about a player like Young – someone fielded centrally but likely to drift from flank to flank – is that he naturally moves into very good positions to form triangles between he, the main striker (Emile Heskey) and the winger. Villa didn’t create a lot of chances, but they were always a threat. The disadvantage of Villa playing just two central midfielders (counting Young as a forward) was that they were occasionally outnumbered in the centre. Petrov and Nigel Reo-Coker took it in turns to get forward, but they sometimes both moved too high up the pitch, and left Villa with space in front of their back four. Frank Lampard was not playing well and wasn’t able to take advantage of this fully, but the numerical deficit partially contributed to Villa’s yellow card count – both central midfielders picked up their bookings after getting caught too high up the pitch. - Zonal Marking. |

lekkie073: you have to assume elampiro's first bath water as a newborn contained 100% of lying crystals. he either lies for a living or he's just a troll. only heaven knows how the folks in his household with the amount of lies he can fashion out of his edo behind. see how he's using a game where everyone knows silva played in the centre of the pitch to analogise the fact that young played centrally for villa - but my resources stretch too deep for elampawa to pull the wool over my eyes. there were 3 floating players behind dzeko in the manchester derby @OT under moyes. opta had silva at the centre......contrary to the argument on ground where opta had ashley young on the flank. navas played on the right, nasri played on the left and david silva occupied the central area. the images i am going to load now would show where they all received majority of their passes that night.

from these images, even a goat can tell where everyone played without having to rely on zonal marking to fabricate lies. nasri occupied the left hand side of the pitch more than silva. navas occupied the right side of the pitch than silva. how is this situation the same as ashley young's whose received passes concentrated so much on the left hand side of the pitch? do some people never give up with white lies? goodness gracious!

Coogar is right on this one. Based on what i watched and remember Ashley played most of his pre-United career as a winger. This is also supported by the images showing the position n direction of passes. Having said that Young played much of his last season in Villa in a floating role behind the striker. Carew, Heskey and Bent rotated striking if remember correctly while Agbonlahor,Downing and Albrighton were on the wings most times with Young floating across the line......THIS WAS IN HIS LAST SEASON THOUGH. Fact remains that Di Maria was more productive that Young this season despite playing fewer minutes. And despite Ashley Young 'keeping' Angel out of the team as has been said, he was unable to match let alone surpass Angel's total haul.
