I grew up in an African society where fairness exist,Where things are done in a way that it should be and not a way it ought to be. You call yourself a feminist seeking for equality but forget to tackle problem from its root but choose to rant all day about the need for equality When actually you can't see the inequality in a man coming to buy you as slave in the name of paying your dowry so as to "own" you instead of seeing you as a partner. You go into your "masters" house and assume the responsibility of a slave by taking up the name which he want you to answer then you add it together with your name and sees it as nothing and happily answers when called Mr & Mrs Chima ![]() In actual sense a man is seen as the one marring a woman, but to achieve equality we should put a halt to it and make it in a way that both parents are the ones marrying the two together and the expenses should fall on both parents only and that dowry of a thing completely removed out of the picture, that way the couple will see each other a equals and not as "master-slave" thingy . Though we know it's not an exaggeration that many homes now have women as bread-winners,but haven't we asked ourselves while we are not yet seen as equals but as the weaker vessel. Men are physically stronger. By nature, they are usually more aggressive. In contrast, a woman usually embodies the ideal of inner dignity. Some people confuse such subtlety with weakness, the way forward is not for men and women to try to be alike. All men and women must be themselves , realizing that God has given each of us unique abilities and also put hands together in other to tackle that marriage thingy. |

Are you for or against the fight for equality? BTW not all families accept bride price and the wedding expenses are mostly shared between the two families. At least, from my experience so far as a Yoruba. Yet, the slave master thing is still waxing stronger daily. |

Like seriously we should rmove d "dowry tin?" In place where I come frm, if a woman dowry is not yet paid, its a bad name on her and she's restricted from participating in certain activities such as annual festivals and other occasions. |

Equality does not mean a woman should slap a mans face. Equality is to see men and women as equal in quality of life. A man is Educated, a woman should be given room to be educated too as far as she wants to go. If A man earns #100 doing a job, a woman doing same job as the man in the same level and organisation should earn #100 too fair and square. Back in the day before women started fighting for equality, Boy kids were treated better. They were educated, A woman couldnt bail anybody from prison, where 1 man can testify in a case, 4 women were needed to equate a mans testimony. A man can vote but women couldnt. A man could drive but a woman coildnt. That was what women of Old fought against. Was that too much to ask for? Why do men like to act like women dont deserve to be treated equaly as men in the society? So a woman that has only girl children is cursed? Abeg, womens lib was not about what modern day women are doing. Believe me, women lib fighters of Old will weep when they see what modern day eomen are doing now. I think both genders of our society need to be re educated about Gender roles while provission should be put in place to make women lives value same as that of the man |

Bride price is ancient. It isn't necessary and gifts (without conditions) is more appropriate. |

Beamborla:the wedding expenses may be shared among the two families but not equally that is if the man's pocket ain't deep enough but the bride price which the man pays to own the lady constitute the major problem why I see the equality movement as a play thing. damn! just not fair to demand equality with your "master" .am not against it anything good for humanity is good to go. just stating the obvious, the problem should be tackled from its root not accept been sold through payment of dowry yet yelling for equality when equality movement gonna be successful¿ in the dream land bae |
| Re: Battle Of The Sexes by cowgirl9090(op): 9:18pm On May 31, 2015 |
MrsChima:in Igbo land it is an unavoidable payment. it demeans a woman that is why its common to hear some comments like: "I paid your bride price so .." in actual sense if bride price continues equality movement is just a joke. ![]()

cowgirl9090:I understand your point of view. My point is, with or without bride price, guys would not stop treating ladies as shit except women come out to fight against the injustice. Bride price is not the root. Our culture and tradition is the root of everything. What would you say of a guy of 15yrs old who told his elder sis of 23 that she has no right to rebuke him or send him on errands because he is a guy. Some parents make their female children serve the male children regardless of the age distance between them. What do you expect from such male child? |
| Re: Battle Of The Sexes by cowgirl9090(op): 12:33pm On Jun 01, 2015 |
Beamborla: Everything a parent does effect the psychological development of a child and they incorporate what they see into their own lives. It is important that parents set the right example. Negative examples can be detrimental to a child’s development and can lead to bad behavior. the way that child treated the Lady is a direct reflection of how their father/parents treated his mother and sisters. serve yea that's what "slaves" do. the wife is owned she is a property now and so will the female ones in the near future so they should learn doing it now. yea our culture and tradition and bride price is ancient also our culture demeaning women. yea we just have to keep fighting till eternity ![]() |
