You did your utmost best as father and mother. You should be proud of that. My prayers is that the merciful God we serve will replace what you have lost in folds in Jesus name.

Its heart breaking that my new baby boy was lost due to systemic failure of government health ministries. On 28th May 4pm thursday evening my baby develop convulsion, l quickly drove him down with my wife to the hospital we had him. We were told he had reacted to jaundice and could only be treated through photo-therapy (blood transfusion) at the general hospital LASUTH ikeja.

He was immediately treated for convulsion and given a reference letter to LASUTH. l immediately drove down to LASUTH IKeja and on arrival we were told there is no (light) to conduct blood transfusion and referred to LUTH idi-araba mushin with an assurance he will be treated.
Baby Salman struggled and raised our hope with normal respiration that he was indeed gonna make it. At LUTH same night, we were told there was no light, no bed, no blood. A bag of blood needed to save his light cost only N5,000.00 but no room for accomdation. He was neither checked nor given first aid.

Students Doctor at LUTH were the doctors on duty at the Children Emergency Ward and said there is nothing they could do. We were referred to Randle General Hospital in Surulere same night same thursday, On getting to Randle, we were waiting for the Doctor while the baby was vomitting seriously and only for the Doctor to announce that he could not be treated there.

We were referred to MASSE General Hospital at Lagos Island same night same day. At Masse hospital, we were told no space to admit him as they have alot of babies to be administered upon. And someone suggested we go to FMC (Federal Medical Center) at Apapa via IDDO Oyingbo. We drove there again same night and on getting there they said they don't do blood transfusion there.

Finally we gave up and decided to go back home around 1 am Friday morning, baby Salman was still battling with life, we decided to locate Gbagada General Hospital on our way back to our private hospital and we lost our way only to end towards Berger instead of Oshodi to locate Gbagada, alas we ended up in an accident.

I rammed under a container truck that was packed on the highway without any safety indication, no back light, no reflective red sticker showing the trailer was not moving, l was about avoiding a trailer that was blowing out heavy smoke, and gradually slammed on my brake immediately l saw the packed trailer and miraculously my car ran under the trailer behind got the car bonnet flattened almost damaging my windscreen and then l knew God was with us as l was push back my seat with something like an airbag and the car came to an halt.

The driver quickly kick start and move the trailer as fast as he could, l came down and was shivering and checked the car, found out the engine was intact and my wife and baby too was save behind me. I had no injury in the process because my seat belt too held me tight and my car airbag was intact as well.

We drove down and headed towards our private hospital. Baby Salman was still breathing. On getting to the hospital he was placed on the drip, injections and oxygen. He was responding and at about 4:30 am Friday morning we headed for Gbagada General Hospital was he was still breathing. We got relived on getting to the children's ward seeing they are capable on reviving the baby.

While waiting for the doctor to come, my wife whispered to me that he was dead. At this moment tears rolled down freely and was calmed by the doctor on arrival. My baby struggled for life, yearning for revival through those journeys he never gave up, baby Salman was a 7months baby delivered in a normal birth even with already discharged placenta in the womb. He came out strong and smiling at will, after 2 days after delivery we were discharged. My hospital was at fault here because we were not willing to go home due to his prematurity but the doctor said we could go home. He ought have been placed on intensive care.

Now l shared this experience with everyone that need to know and to learn from me. Either way l was wrong or right but l know the government owes everybody a duty of care and that can be sued and or be sued for.

Please share my story to everyone on your list maybe it will get to the table of one those killers in government, health ministries, general hospitals and the society at large.

I lost my baby boy to a system failure.

I don't even know how to comfort you.its quite unfortunate a failure of the system caused you the loss.my girlfriend is 7weeks pregnant with our first child and I cant describe how excited I am.in the same vein,I can't begin to imagine how downcast you are.I believe you should sue but I assume your baby wasn't admitted hence proving negligence might be difficult.but going to the office of public defender would not be a wasted effort.

On reading about Jaundice on the internet, l found out that a photo-therapy treatment requires a florescent tube light that is sold between 300 to 500 naira which LASUTH IKEJA said they don't have but there is bed space but no light (500 naira bulb). There was light every where in the LASUTH premises, so l wonder why they couldn't save my baby's life because of just a florescent bulb that l can even buy ten (10) right there if they requested me to.

Please anyone with email address of where l can write a petition against the general hospitals involved or where l can direct letters to, do not hesitate to let me know. At least l want to use this medium to save other babies that might experience these wicked care from these government hospitals.

Thanks everyone for showing love. l appreciate. Remember, its my turn today, it may happen to anyone tomorrow lets all stand straight to kick out wicked caregivers out of our society.

In an advance country, my baby will still be alive now.

Thanks once again. Please let push this to the front page so people can learn

Sir, pls accept my condolences. I feel your pain. Our health sector is sick but hold that ur private hospital for your child's death. They discharged your baby to create bed space. In my private hospital, a full-term (40wks) baby can only be discharged after 48hrs provided everything is ok and you must bring the baby back in 7days or less to see a paed.

I'm sure you won't use that hospital again, why not say their name and address. That's the only way to protect other children.

Quack hospital that couldn't even do a proper referral...sent you chasing shadows.

I think the first move is to get your lawyer or find one, then sue the medical director of the hospital you had your baby. Obviously if the hospital had done a professional post delivery care, you would not have had to resort to a secondary health care service. It might be a lot difficult to change the entire system in a short period. All the other hospitals you visited for rescue will likely claim they have no record of your case.

While it is very important to seek justice to forestall future occurrence and save the life of others, please do not get tempted to stay in bitterness and vengeance for too long.

God bless your family.

I am sorry for your loss. I can only imagine what you are going through now and especially then.
If you really want to make a difference and prevent at least one other baby from dying, you have got to sue. If you do not have money get in touch with one of the human right lawyers in Lagos and ask for help.
Nigerians are not dedicated to their jobs mostly because little is done when they mess up.
Hold someone accountable and make them pay. Change is initiated when people ask questions and complain.
Once again, my heartfelt condolences.

This is one of the so many infrastructural decay in Nigeria. I suggest a policy or law be put in place that all public office holders majorly politicians who have been saddled with the responsibility of providing basic amenities in the country be banned from medical trips abroad. By so doing, they would be quick to put measures in place towards ensuring that our hospitals are well equipped and ready at anytime and defaulters would face severe penalty. Abeg, nobody should cry fundamental human rights.

Until we do this, our hospitals would never be up to standard.

My heart goes out to you and your wife and I pray God consoles you.

When a child is jaundiced, phototherapy is what is needed not blood transfusion. Blood transfusion also doesn't require electricity but phototherapy does.
I wonder why any hospital with maternity and paediatric unit will not have a functional phototherapy.

It's only in Nigeria that even the student doctors have this very condescending air around them and are not willing to go one single step above their daily routine even if it's to save a life. It's so pathetic.

The life we live in this country is by God's grace alone.

May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen

When a child has jaundice at a moderate level photo therapy is required but when it very high blood transfusion is required immediately because it could cause brain damage in the child, so if the hospital said they were gonna do blood transfusion it simply mean the child's bilirubin was very high. Now my question goes to the op, when u got to the hospital was a test called serum bilirubin carried out on your child to determine the level of his bilirubin? Cos if there was light to carry that test, which last at least two to three hours, then they shouldnt have had problems placing him on photo therapy, now if that test wasn't carried out due to no light, how then did they know it is high, to the extent of a blood transfusion. I feel very sad about your loss and it is high time we speak out and put an end to all this abnormalities in our Nigerian hospitals.

My brother I could understand and I feel your pain. May God almighty heal your wound by giving you another child that will stay. Our hospitals and doctors are all killer agents, especially those at the general hospitals. My last born is 2 years today and also had jaundice, after 8 days we went for circumcision, on getting there the doctor say the child has jaundice, I was sad and confused, the doctor referred us to Shagamu general hospital, I told doctor is there anything he could do? He said he can do the photo-therapy but no fuel to run the gen as the gen will run the phototherapy for 24 hours , I then told doctor I will buy him a truck of fuel provided he can do that for my baby. I deposited 50k and the treatment started. Every 2 two hours blood was taken from my son to check the bilirubin level or so. We spent 5 days in the hospital. At the end of the day, the doctor said I have change of 20k, I told doctor to take it to buy drink. When we got home, I was told by an elderly man to always bring the baby out and expose him to the sun from 7am to 9am that sun has the ability to help the blood break the bilirubin down therefore reducing the jaundice. I later read about it and behold that early morning sun does phototherapy a lot.
Once again OP may God grant you and your family the fortitude to bear the loss.
RIP Salman
