BARELY A DAY AFTER MY INITIAL WRITE UP ON THE GBENGA ALARAN AND JUSTIN YVES UKWU CASE, I HEARD THAT ANOTHER STUDENT OF UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN DIED AS A RESULT OF NEGLECT AND REFUSAL BY HEALTH WORKERS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN TEACHING HOSPITAL TO ATTEND TO HER BECAUSE THEY ARE ON STRIKE.

IMAGINE, A TEACHING HOSPITAL IS ALSO PART OF THOSE WHO CHOSE TO IGNORE PATIENTS JUST BECAUSE THEY SAY THEY ARE ON STRIKE. I THOUGHT DOCTORS AND NURSES ARE MEANT TO SAVE LIVES FIRST AND ASK QUESTIONS LATER, GUESS I WAS WRONG!
HOW LONG WILL THESE CONTINUE? HOW LONG WILL WE CONTINUE TO LOSE LIVES OF INNOCENT INDIVIDUALS, BE IT STUDENTS OR NOT?

WE WANT REFORMS, WE KEPT ON CLAMOURING FOR CHANGE BUT THAT IS NOT HAPPENEING. WHO KNOWS WHO THE NEXT VICTIM MIGHT BE?

NOW PEOPLE GET SCARED ABOUT GOING TO HOSPITALS FOR CHECKUPS BECAUSE MOST OF THE HEALTH WORKERS ACT LIKE “TIN GODS”. IF IT’S NOT VERBAL ABUSE, IT’S GOING TO BE REFUSAL OF ATTENTION. ALL THESE HAS TO STOP, AND IT HAS TO START NOW, OR ELSE NIGERIAN STUDENT MIGHT BE FORCED TO RTAKE LAWS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS AND THE RESUT OF THAT WOULD BE FATAL.

CALLING FOR ALL HANDS TO BE ON DECK, ALL FORMS OF INJUSTICE BEING METTED OUT ON HOSPITAL PATIENTS HAS TO STOP, NOW!!!
MEANWHILE,I'LL GET MORE INFO ON THE UNILORIN STUDENT'S CASE.

I would only reply this one.....

I am a medical doctor, working in a state hospital, and I graduated from UITH....

Please next time, find out the main reason why doctors went on strike, before pointing accusing fingers....

Moreover, there are lots of hospitals at the tanke-GRA-post office axis, so why taking him to a far place like UITH, with the traffic and co....

Please let's talk

I was bitten by a snake on campus at about 8 PM at night while walking down a dark road with my bobo
My boyfriend tied his shirt on my leg and carried me on his manly shoulders to the medical center on campus grin
On getting there,no doctor, the ambulance had no fuel
The nurse used lux soap and cleaned the spot where's I was bitten shocked shocked
The nurses were coming every 5-10 minute to check if I was still alive
3 hours later, the ambulance came and took me to the teaching hospital's accident and emergency unit
I was seen by the house officer on call, who took notes and went away
The consultant, his residents and students on rotation came on their rounds about 9 AM
The doctor asked the time of the bite, I told him,he asked what type of snake, duh, said if the snake was poisonous I should have died hours ago and he discharged me.

That was my experience

The doctor might as well be postponing the surgery to save your brother's life from the risk of undergoing a surgery without the necessary equipments and logistics. That's why you have to talk to him and know why he's doing that. There might also be patients with worse conditions that require more urgent attention than your brother with paucity of equipments to to attend to all of them at a time...Never say never bro.

And if you think they are useless, why not operate on your brother yourself? Let's be sensible please. If you don't like their services, go to another hospital.

2. If the health workers are on strike, who did you then meet there that turned you down?

Well i've once been a victim of their rubbish. Was seriously sick in 200L days. Had to rush myself to to the clinic. On getting there, I waa told the doctors were busy and I had to wait. On checking around I noticed there werent doing anything tangible. I started shouting in the clinic o that I will die if I dont see doctor in d next 1minute, added enough drama to make it real. Lol. It was then a nurse rushed me to a doctor.

I was now thinking aloud that if I havent dramatize, they would have delayed me or even say I should take paracetamol. Plus those nurses are so rude.

I prefer young doctors to treat me cos the older doctors are so bossy and can even choke u while questioning u.
Reminds me of a young female doctor that treated me in the clinic. She died a week later. I cried for her mehn cos I loved the way she handled me. RIP to her cry

Most snakes are not venomous. There's no point panicking over a patient that has no sign of envenomation. You claim to be a doctor, but don't know this simple fact. Even me that's not a doctor knows. Later, you will say Nigerian docs r quacks, wetin you come be?

And that's the bloody truth....

Look, doctors in Nigeria are not well-equipped, yes, but that doesn't mean we are half-baked....

The nurse examined the wound to see if there are fang marks, and when she saw none, with no signs of envenomation (bleeding diastasis, cyanosis, etc) she knew it was a non-poisonous snake...

But she still did the correct thing, she referred to a higher health centre where consultants could review you, and you were given a clean sheet of health....

And you are here complaining about doctors....

Instead of you to thank God you are alive, and it wasn't a rattlesnake that bit you

I'm not a doctor. I believe in using my brain. How will my brother not be attended to and I won't find somewhere else to take him to?

I'm a lawyer, I do medicolegal cases and I have found out that most doctors are demonized for no reasonable reason.

Don't have much time now but will write some stories illustrating some of these soon.

By the way, my school clinic almost killed my friend. It was God that saved him. He had typhoid but he decided to self medicate thinking it was malaria. After some days of realizing he wasnt getting better, we rushed him to the school clinic. It was tehre we realized he had typhoid not malaria and he was placed on fresh medications. He got better but we noticed he was looking white and weak. Said he went to the school clinic to report and they said all is well.

The following day around 10pm, my friend fainted. But getting cab was another task on its own. On getting to FMC we were told he had just 10% of blood left and any delay in bringing him would have been a sorry case. The doctor had to ask who placed him on such drug dosage without blood tonic. Only God saved him that night. That was when I knew how important blood tonic is when using antibiotics

#JUSTICE FOR JUSTIN
THE TRUE ACCOUNT FROM JUSTIN'S MOTHER

On Tuesday, May 26th, 2015 at 9:12am a phone call was placed to me from 08188781415 informing me that my son was being moved from the school Medical Center to their affiliated specialist Clinic, Faith Mediplex, to receive blood transfusion AND would be discharged that evening. I was assured that his condition was not serious and then proceeded to give his medical history of malaria spleen.
Unfortunately, from 12:17pm that day, I started receiving calls from Dr. Idahosa of Faith Mediplex, Benin, she said that my son’s condition was serious. I arrived Benin at 17:17hrs from Port Harcourt, traced Faith Mediplex and left unattended for over 30minutes. After much insistence on my part, I was eventually informed that my son had died of a sickle cell crisis at 2:15pm on that day, May 26, 2015. How can this have happened when my son was NOT a sickle cell patient? My genotype is AS while his father is AA.
QUESTIONS

2)The minimum PVC level required for blood transfusion in a human being is 45, why was Justin Ukwu still left unattended to when his PVC level dropped to 27?
3)Why was no call put through to his next of kin through out his ill health till 9:12am on 26/05/2015 when he was dying AND even then, the true state of his health NOT divulged?
4)Why was he denied proper medical attention? Even if he was a sickler, was the treatment given to him the right treatment for someone in that condition? Starvation, abandonment, verbal and physical abuse are definitely NOT integral parts in managing any illness.
5)Why is there such a concerted attempt to distort/deny that such an act of criminal negligence occurred from the primary care givers, the marina Consultants (HMO) and the Benson Idahosa University, Benin which has a chief Medical Director and whose parent body runs a specialist clinic, Faith Mediplex, which has surgeons, nurses and other medical staff who could have been seconded to the University Medical Centre.
My questions must be answered and until they are, I will continue to fight for justice for my beloved, caring, gentle son, Yves Justin Nnamdi Ineye Ukwu.
Signed: Margaret Nnennaya Ekpeyong Ukwu MOTHER.
Alright, here's what to do:

1. Get a lawyer.

2. Demand a autopsy from an independent source. If the boy died of a Sickle Cell related disease, he should have medical records from childhood that shows he was a sickler. And it is very hard to hide that. You also have access to his medical records from the clinic, an independent Medical Review board can ask the doctors who signed it to explain their thinking. Trust me on this.

3. Get the names of the CMD of the school clinics, Nigerians hate popularity and trust me, when you mention someone's father (who may be masquerading as an upstanding citizen) and publicise it, you will speedily get answers. Keep this story in the news, social media, what you can. But be sure of your facts, you need the boy's medical records and proof of all these allegations (screengrab the time stamp on all messages and yes, your lawyer can subpoena call logs from your call provider, but it won't get to that, trust me).

4. Don't give up. You're not fighting for Justin, you're fighting for every other child who isn't Justin. You are now their mother, Justin is now their rallying point.

Something similar also happened in January in my school. In the process of checking medical fitness for every fresher for the 2014/15 session. A girl(may her soul RIP) that was SS, was declared as AS. She thinking that her story has changed due to the information from a "medical institution" was taking her drugs less-frequently.

I'm not saying all doctors in Nigeria are half-baked, all I'm saying is that I have 3 Consultant Paeditricians, One dermatologist, One cardiovascular surgeon, one Neonatal surgeon, one (late, wonderful) Head of Anesthesiology, one Pharmacist and all their friends and more as relatives and close friends.

And all of them have continually insisted I know precisely what any doctor attending to me is doing because they don't trust most of their peers and most will not leave the care of their loved ones to random doctors. And every single one of them trained in Nigeria, taught in LUTH or whatever teaching hospital and most left due to disillusionment. So they are not talking about places they have never been to.

Is this the first time we have heard of such medical issues? Isn't it better to regulate yourselves, so people don't keep demonising you? Isn't it better to remove the bad eggs from the crate, so the rest doesn't spoil? Shouldn't we'll stop being so defensive ( I mean, seriously, you are defending washing a bite mark with Lux soap, something perfumed, had Isopropyl Alcohol 71% or higher finshed inside market?)

Doctors on this thread, is this the first time you've heard people complain? Be honest, don't you think there's something wrong with our Healthcare system and perhaps you and other medical staff are part of the problem? Can we all just stop taking SHI.T so freaking personal and say "Look, there are too many complaints, let us be our own watchdogs so that we are elevated back to the same high level of respect we got in the 1980s and 1990s?"

If they accuse Civil engineers of not being well-trained in Nigeria, I will never argue. I know that for a fact I didn't get the best education, I blame myself, my lecturers, the government and the system, but I at least take the time to accept responsibility for my share. It made me go and actively search out knowledge.

Babe, I understand you perfectly...

I have a friend that was prescribed propranolol because she had palpitations....

When I probed further, I found out she had anxiety disorder with mild depression because she lost her mom, which means she didn't need any beta blockers, even counselling would suffice....

So I know what some docs can do.....

But as Nigerians, we must all realize that there are also bad engineers, bad teachers, bad politicians, even bad s3x!!!!

We can't say because there is an oil stain on the dress, we burn it.....

You are certainly very stupeed
I'm sure you are also not smart enough to know that non venomous snakes also have fangs
At what point does one know a snake is venomous or non venomous?
When the patient is not exhibiting any symptoms or when they die ?
So you observe them till they die if that is what will happen abi
That is the extent of snake bite treatment in a Nigerian hospital and the urgency in treating
That is the moral of my story but of course you are too thick to grasp that, ode
Some were not as lucky
Students have died from snake bites and the treatment I got was not different from what they got
Mine just happened to be a Non venomous snake

There were definite mark(s) on my ankle
I saw them and so did my boyfriend
When I stepped, the snake encircled my leg and I flung my leg out reflexly and it flew off and slithered into the bushes
Whether the mark was a bite or a scratch from the scales, your guess is as good as mine but there was a definite mark
Washing a bite with a lux soap nearby is certainly the lowest of the low IMHO
Waiting three whole hours to be transported to a teaching hospital ( that couldn't do much anyway) is certainly not standard of care anywhere.
It was fruitless at that point
One week after this incidence,I did pull out something that looked like a small needle tip from the exact same spot I felt the bite
If this had been a poisonous snake,They would have simply watched me die the same way they watched some other students die
I would have been long dead in that medical center

That is the whole point of this story

Alright, I think you need to take a chill pill first of all. The medical profession is probably the most battered and everyone thinks their doctors are stupid and negligent.
People always say the interesting part of these stories and never tell you why and how the other part played out.
Yes, a doctor will always, in response to any allegation, say what he would have done if he was on the seat, and I can say that is not in any way defensive.
Contrary to all what you all think, Nigerian doctors have the content. They know their stuff very well and you'll be surprised to know that we do very well on international fronts.
For Justin, get an autopsy done, get the medical records and correlate with autopsy findings.
The system is crappy and that's an institutional problem. There's hardly any sector in Nigeria where they function optimally. Even our roads are still built by JB. Healthcare is just very sensitive and we know that. ]

sir, why leave your elder brother in the hand of trained fools? Why not carry out the procedures yourself? Your choice of words are just puerile.

You never see anything
They will be there eating groundnut and banana and cracking jokes
Emergency means nothing in Nigeria
Patients walk into emergency rooms on their two feet and die In That emergency room hours later without laying eyes on any doctors
God help you if you happen to fall sick on eid- el - fitri or Easter
Your own don finish na
The nurses will curse you for coming at that time and certainly no doctor will come by
Nigerian nurses na another story
Many of them are not even fit to take care of fowls in a poultry let alone humans

I gotta make a few comments here.

This isn't the first time I'll be reading or hearing abt such stories as the OP presented. However, one thing I have realized is that things are always blown out of proportion. Fine, I'm not excusing anyone, not even the staff on duty at those time periods in question.

But come to think of it, relatives, friends and family of patients tend to be emotional and sometimes non-rational. I will be too, if I had a friend or family member on a sick bed and I feel he/she is not being attended to as I want him to.

Consider the case of the mother above who stated that her son was not transfused at PCV of 45% when her son had 27%. Just as someone rightly pointed out, no professional will transfuse even at that 27% except there are other things involved.

One needs to understand that things are not always what it seems.

BTW, every public health facility has a protocol, and especially the teaching hospitals. Patients are seen daily, and at intervals depending on several factors. As to whether patients are neglected, first, one needs to keep in mind the fact that almost every government hospital in this country is short-staffed. No matter how dreary the situation is, most doctors see their patients at least once a day. And for the critically ill ones, more frequently. If by any means, that won't be possible, that's why the nurses are there to keep and eye and call the doctor in case they notice anything untoward.

Then as to admitting patients, there are a lot of factors involved. In a tertiary center, there's no excuse not to admit any patient, except the lack of obvious facilities that may be necessary for effectively taking care of a patient (which is not meant to be, but for the poor system we are in).

However, for smaller facilities, it is more of a crime to accept a patient you know you CANNOT effectively handle, that is, you don't have the expertise and/or facilities to manage such a case. As such, nurses and doctors have been trained to RAPIDLY assess a situation and make instant decisions whether to admit or refer.

The medical profession is one of many intricacies. That is why it is difficult to judge except one has all the facts at his disposal.

This is one reason why I think a lot of sensitization of the public needs to be done. Doctors have been battered. We have been ridiculed, and yet, we have to keep on attending to the same people who ridicule us. Such temperance!

But nonetheless, the health sector is not at its best and lot needs to be done to revamp it.

RIP to the dead, but always remember, things are not always what it seems.
