Cholera Outbreak Hits Jos As Water Scarcity Persists by Nobody: 7:49am On Jun 04, 2015
More than 20 people have been diagnosed with cholera and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital in Jos, Plateau State.

The Head of the Medical team at the Kauna Clinic in Tudun Wada area of Jos, Dr. Yohanna IIzang, confirmed this to journalists in Jos on Tuesday.

According to him, the clinic has so far diagnosed no fewer than 20 persons with the disease.

Ilzang disclosure comes as water scarcity persists in the state. Residents of the state have been starved of water for more than four weeks now.

The scarcity is coming on the heels of an industrial action embarked upon by civil servants in the state over non-payment of their six months salaries.

Again, the scarcity has made many water vendors to resort to sourcing the commodity from all manner of channels.

Meanwhile, IIzang has also confirmed that there are increased cases of stooling and vomiting among residents of the state.

The victims, he added, included children.

He noted that while some received treatment at the hospital, others visited other private health centres in the state.

A guardian, Mr. Moses Gbande, who spoke to journalists, said his brother had been vomiting and stooling since Sunday night.

The Public Relations Officer of the state Water Board, Nangor Ndam, also noted that the board was putting extra effort to check the excesses of water vendors, whom, he alleged, were selling unwholesome and contaminated water to the citizens.

According to him, water vendors are taking advantage of the strike to sell contaminated water.

He said, “For the past weeks, we have been battling with these illegal water vendors, with the assistance of the civil defence. It is worrisome because they are taking advantage of the strike to sell contaminated water to unsuspecting members of the public.

Efforts to reach the state Chief Epidemiologist, Dr Raymond Juryit, were unsuccessful, as calls to his telephone did not go through.
