Its no longer news that the price of oil the only source of revenue have nosedived, its a global phenomenon so let's not dwell in pointing accusing fingers in every direction.

The problems is here so let's seek our ways out by proffering solutions to numerous challenges the unfortunate economic downturn pose to us.

The list of states owing their workers salaries was released recently and South East scored 1/5, meaning only one state is debt free in SE while some owes as high as 5 to 6 months salaries while some are lucky to be owing only parastatals few months.

Its high time we face realities, let's stop mocking those that are facing similar challenges but chose to remain silence, let's rally round and discuss how to escape this harsh economic reality.

If you can go through the links I provided below, you will discover the future of expensive but sought after Bonny Light or "sweet light" as its being called in the international market is bleak, blighted by the recent discoveries of how to refine cheaper "sweet heavy" by our previous buyers.

Its no longer news to us that Imo, Abia are the most indebted while Ebonyi and Enugu debts are not so serious.

How do we escape this challenges

What do you think governments in East should do stay buoyant before this runs out of control?

Where do we have comparative advantage over one another and how do we maximize the opportunities these challenges pose.

Can we be debt free and still embark on capital projects

Or can we only run a government that celebrate success in offsetting recurrent expenditures

If eastern governments pass policies to only use goods and services in the east it's self as long as the providers offer then at a 35% subsidy (similar to the UK health system), then we will easily remedy the issue of running out of government funds because the more the government spends the more it will get in return through subsidies

I'm also for unprecedented privatization. I believe schools can be privatize at all levels with the state paying the school 40% of what it pays now as long as the school meets a set of standards set by the state in teacher competency, classroom size, equipment specifications, student satisfaction, and curriculum quality.

Same type of privatization can be done for health as well, works etc.

When you say imo and abia are most indebted while enugu and ebonyi are less indebted which debt are you talking about?owing of salary, arrears or debt to financial institutions or debts due to bonds?
Re: Easterners Let's Meet Here by Stolen: 8:39pm On Jun 08, 2015
These are primary area of concentration. But we should try to work as one unit. I mean all the state leaders need o sit down and have meetings together every week or at least once in two weeks or a month.

THrow the state idea in the bin as we have only one igbo tribe and east. Industrialisation Ebonyi and Abia, Trade and Commerce Anambra, Agriculture and Tourism Imo, Enugu Information and Services.

The Areas of concentration is on point. Let us build together. Take the development to every locality, whilst carving out world class cities. Together and it start with build world class universities together in every state. It is a knowledge based economy

Lol. I thought you were all mocking Osun, when your own house is also on fire. You did a good job in helping osun people scream to the world and put pressure on the goat called Aregbe while you keep silent on your own leaders. Lmaoooo.

Respect to Pita Hoebi and Obiano, plus my friend Chino.

I also have an idea called the Adopt Policy.

If a business, organization, etc adopts a road for example this means they will pay for it's regular maintenance and be the 'landlord' of that road. They will then receive an annual check from them government as well as all advertising rights on that particular stretch of road. This goes for roads that have been built as well as roads that haven't been built. If there are potholes or road conditions don't meet set state standards the state can penalize the owner and they will be allowed to keep that road for a period of 5 years.

I believe the government is bad at doing the right thing but good at telling people what to do, so lets create a situation where the people do the development and the government is tasked with enforcing that they develop it the right way.

I'm also for a tax on property being well enforced so that each state can rival Lagos in budget. We can easily double our budget if every land owner paid N500 annually (which they can all afford). if one out of every 15 people own property (15 considering children, the poor and propertied women), that's a revenue jump of +N67,000,000 monthly, N804,000,000 annual for Imo State alone.

The way you all open different threads on Osun makes me laugh cos you were indirectly helping the Osun people. I love that school privatizing, its one thing that helped Anambra move on and maintain a solvent state because of giving back many schools to the missionary.

Its laudable but expensive though high standard and morality are always observed

Government should focus on taking as many responsibilities out of government hands as possible and into private ones by structuring a system where they're profitable

the same way i want people to adopt roads, they should be able to adopt schools, clinics, hospitals etc.
Instead of taking loans there should be a project market. The project market means the government will list works it wants constructed with the specifications and contractors will bid to build them. Gov will then pay for the cost + profit when it all done. The reason for this is because if government doesn't have money at the exact moment it can pay the builder back in 4-5 years when the economy is on a different footing and the project is completed.

People should also be able to buy into these projects like stock. for example if i want a stadium built and it will cost 100 naira, someone should be able to invest 1 naira so if the government pays them the cost of building it plus 25% 4 years later, the person will received $1.25 for that 1 Naira.

We need just two international airport in the whole eastern region. One in Enugu and the other in Onitsha Anambra State.

Anymore is just pointless and a waste. Let us get the two right, with multiple terminal etc. Onitsha can be integrated multiple terminal whilst Enugu can be segregated multiple terminal .

Might need to build up to five terminal by the time they are done. This is a long term capital project

yup, lets not stop there. We can do this for universities, hospitals, roads, bridges, and clinics. We need to turn development into big business.

If Asaba, Enugu and Imo all have airports what's the point of putting one in Anambra? Abia's economy is bigger than Anambra's and there's more economic activity in Aba than Onitsha. We can upgrade the Owerri airport ourselves since we built it ourselves so why not go that route because it's cost effective.

I don't think an airport will do it though. you can't move goods by air the way you can move it by train. We need Anambra and Imo connected to the national rail like Abia Enugu and Ebonyi.

The one in Enugu is enough, why do need airport in Onitsha when Asaba is there, how much will the airport contribute to the state purse.

Aviation is not that important to us.

Those can be down graded to local and regiona or even cargo airport. Urban planing need knowledge and exposure. We need people that know wat they are talking about and will get it right that 100 years from now people will say they were ahead of their time.

Onitsha need a world class cargo airport and riverport with seaport mechanization. Obuaku seaport in Abia is crucial, forget port harcourt or even Ibaka, look east to Abia. Ebonyi needs a cargo airport likewise Abia and Imo.

We have alot of work my brother.

I answered this question. If u want to build a commercial city, u definately need airport in Onitsha more so than Asaba.

Asaba can always be downgraded to regional/local status. The First point of call for any serious development move is the transport sector. As it stands now in the east with good advicers in 30 years we can be the next China.

We have all that it takes, people, resources and land. Let us go there.
