Very true. Most of the funding available are for home students.Sometimes, some international students can be fortunate to get an offer for a PhD -partial tuition (Home students fee rate) and stipend if they are exceptional or having an outstanding masters project that needs more development.

Yes some do get partial scholarship which is not good enough though

LOL, so I saw too different topics today on this forum trying to talk down the idea of schooling in UK. I hope no one here is discouraged. The onli advantage I see with canda, aussie and yankee is that you have more months to do "menial" jobs especially if your grades are below par. Jobs would not come automatically If you have low grades in those countires. If you make a top grade in UK you've achieved a lot as u have better chances of getting a job in the UK or Nigeria.

@Bolded True! If not for migration purposes which most of them have at the back of their minds, many of those who try to talk down the UK as a choice destination for schooling know the truth.

Actually, they are right and wrong at the same time.

For immigration or work experience purposes, then the UK is probably not the best choice. However, there are still opportunities here but there is no guarantee of, or formula to getting them. That said, I do know several people (Computer Science and Engineering though) who found worthwhile things to do after Masters, but the vast majority did not and had to go back to their respective countries.

If you are looking for a great educational and cultural experience ALONE, then the UK is definitely the place to go. If you are looking for a sure means to change your life, then maybe not.

As mentioned before, the advantages of Canada, Germany, and Australia over the UK is that these countries offer a 'hassle-free' post-study work visa, unlike the UK which has since abolished it. In terms of jobs after graduation, the UK is at par with all those other countries. I have seen MSc holders in the UK working as taxi drivers, security guards etc, the same applies to all the other countries without exception. The internet is rife with the challenges facing highly-skilled immigrants in developed countries working in the unskilled job market. So YES, there are other countries where the possibility of a work visa after graduation is more or less guaranteed, BUT the chances of getting a job aligned to your professional qualifications in those countries is no different from that of the UK. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

Personally, I'm not happy at the way the current UK government treats foreign students, especially based on the fact that these students pay through their nose to benefit from a world-class educational system. This is why I'm a sworn life-long disciple of the Labour party, to whom I would forever be indebted to for directly benefiting from their open policies towards immigrants. To be honest, the future is not looking bright for foreign students coming into the UK with the intention of staying afterwards. The current government wants foreign students to come to the UK, finish studying your course, and you can now f--k off to your home countries, cheers!

There was a time when as a foreign student in the UK, it treats you with open arms. You get a post-study visa when you finish your course. You can then apply for other visas afterwards until you eventually get your British citizenship. This made the UK the prime destination for immigrants who used the student visa route to immigrate for a better life. Most people who came to the UK on/before 2012 benefited from this, and most are all British citizens or indefinite leave visa holders today.

Why would any sane immigrant want to pay for a PhD in the UK when he/she can do it for free in Germany, Canada, Australia etc and get paid a stipend as well. I would only pay for a PhD in the UK if the course is offered by universities in Oxford or Cambridge, which belong to the the top ten universities in the world.

*Rant over*

@futuredon ..tnx boss for d insight... its gud to av a shu alumni in d haus...yea I get manchester uni ish thanks to Russell and co grin.

so pls telme ow d town is boss e.g job accessibility (if its industrialised), ow quiet it is, living expense, and ow reliable d schools career service is. . #ps am really not interested in d nite life so u can skip dat part.wink

tnx and nice to av u around

In my honest honest opinion, I wouldn't say that Sheffield is heavily industrialized, however I know a few people who were working as students back then, however getting a p/t or casual job can be hectic as first. The general advice is that one should have sufficient means for at least first 3 months post-arrival. It's not expensive and transport system is pretty good. I will skip the NightLife as advised, hahaha.

As for the career service, I think it depends on your intended course. I personally did not explore those options when I was at SHU as I wasn't looking to work post-study, however I did receive emails several times about career fairs et al. I guess I'm not in the best position to talk about career service, lol. Besides, I was not on the main campus. Na that other boring campus I dey smiley and na students wey dey City campus get all the hot news for hand back then

Sorry guys i have to hid some posts though i agreed that the attack on claremont is uncalled for.

@Preciousstones i'm sorry but that comment is not necessary, claremont was factually stating both sides of the situation which a lot of people have failed to do here.

In my honest honest opinion, I wouldn't say that Sheffield is heavily industrialized,

Sheffield used to be the heart of British industrial power. The city was an early source of steel and continued up untill the 1960s as a major producer of steel and as a manufacturing centre for heavy industry. (Leading to thousands of well paid jobs.)
All that, ( or most of it) has gone now with the steel and mining finished and the sites cleared, mostly for shopping centres.
It is now cheaper to buy steel from China and coal from Poland, all the jobs have gone. embarassed embarassed
The plus side is that the air pollution has gone now! cheesy
