I am from idemili LG which comprises towns where the python is the recognized totem. I do not condone the practise or support it but I'd like to correct some misconceptions.

1. Not all snakes are revered in Idemili. Only the python (eke) is.
2. The python is the people's totem and not a god. It is not worshipped but revered and believed to be a protector/guardian.
3. The snakes come and go freely like the OP observed, even in my own village/family home, and I believe this largely because pythons are non venomous snakes and secondly, they have come to exist peacefully over so many years with people of the area so neither the python nor the people regard each other as a threat.
Another brilliant student..nothing spiritual about it as some peeps claim....ecological system.

Yeah, its true, I serve in Anambra state, Umunya. You don't kill pyton there, but I kill about four before I finished serves, two of them came very close to my window in the night so I have to do the needful.

Though people cautioned me then but I told them it's not my religion so nothing will happened to me.

So many thing happen in so many places.

you didn't need to kill a python - which is the particular snake you were asked not to kill. it's even harmless to people as its only big enough to constrict small animals.

This is actually real, a good friend of mine visited a man in Anambra and he saw a python, God saved him that he had not kill it cause that one dey kill snake well well, he's from Cross river, the man told him that if he kill it he will have to bury it as if he is burying a human being. The man now had to lure the python away. They see the pythons as gods and that if you visit them and the python comes you are a good visitor.

In a way, culture has helped to preserve nature. By not killing these animals we dont offset the balance of nature. If only its the same of other wildlife which are considered endangered today(Elephant,Rhino, Tiger etc) As for religion, thats for God to judge. Last time i checked, He doesnt blog.

A Catholic priest was chased out in my home town in njaba, imo in the 90's for killing such python for eating his eggs in the poultry . he even had the guts to come to church boasting about it. My uncle saved the clergy ''s butt by inviting police to rescue him as masquerades and angry youths were waiting outside the church to flog him mercilessly.

I like the fact that these people are preserving this beautiful specie of snake for the next generations. Many animals are going extinct now due to aggressive urbanization. Thanks to this superstition, we get to have healthy specie of python around for a long time.

Pythons of that size are actually harmless and peaceful. Next time you might want to experiment or have fun by going to market to buy a live mouse or hare, and lock it up in confinement with the python. You would watch the beauty of nature in a python feeding live. The speed it curls itself round the hare, and the patience it swallows it slowly. Take a few snap shots. Keep them in your archive. Life is beautiful. But the hare will be swearing for you sha for what you just did to it.

Goodluck.

in my hometown of Abagana, Anambra State. its forbidden to kill pythons. if you kill one, you give it a proper burial (with all the ceremony accorded to deceased humans) to appease the gods. I've never encountered one and haven't seen nobody giving the ancestral serpent a burial. though one of my kinsmen found one in his compound and had to use a stick to push it out and into a gully near our house.
its allowed to kill other snakes- the poisonous ones
