I am still amazed about some questions here. When the brainbox is designed/programmed differently to the actual gearbox. The speed ratio that the vehicle should change gears is different for a 4 speed and a 5 speed transmission. This is what makes the rough shifting and will lead to unnecessary and premature wear of the gearbox components and untimely failure.

The designers who designed the gearbox must have a reason for doing so otherwise they wouldn't have.

There is also a possibility that the petrol consumption may not be as good as it should be cos gear 5 supposed to be the overdrive. The one you have there is 4 speed. The brainbox will be confused.

Sometimes people expect the right result with a wrong input or may be they just want someone else to say what they want to hear and make them feel good.

The whole car is an equation. Changing a variable (gearbox) out of that equation will change the result. How else can that be more simple undecided

The OP is not expecting the same result from 10pin as 13pin. He has emphasised his desire to get 13pin as soon as economics favours him. He is only scared the 10pin could ruin his engine or maybe, drive train before this happens. The answer is no.

Concerns should be how the ECU interprets control signals and drives the transmission control transducers. If you have a technical prognosis, please share.

My apology if i come across as a bit harsh. In my experience its a bit tricky to give exactly how long something like this can last. 2 drivers with exactly same make and models of cars and no matter how identical living conditions will experience 2 different problems with their vehicles over time. Simply because the driving habits will be different.

If the OP has a lot of stop and go type of traffic, it MIGHT not last as long as someone that drives mostly on the express. So giving an exact duration of how long it will last might be very inaccurate.

So, since its now known that there is a problem, just enjoy the vehicle as long as you can before you can gather resources to change the gearbox back again.

Once again, its not my intention to be rude to you.

Regards

2000 Avalon uses Dexron 3 fluid. When i am in Nigeria, the best place i can trust to get it is Oando. They usually sell for about N1,000. Not sure about the current price as of now but should be in the same range. Any Oando should have it.

Make sure its Dexron III and not 2.

Sometimes if you remove the gear oil gauge stick, it will be written there.

Good luck

Thanks to Kashif and USAutobuy. The bolded is particularly helpful. I checked the gear oil gauge stick and what is written there is DEXRON II or III. Which of the two do you think is the best for my car?

Buy the car, subtract the cost of TCU, Transmission and labour, then pay.

hi Gurus,
I changed my gear box on Saturday, a 2006 camry V4. though initially budgeted for 10 pin, was informed that my car had a 13 pin tranny and I paid for and got a 'belgium' one. with the change, I noted that the car jerks between 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 ie 2 jerks as one accelerates to 80km/hr.
following the installation, Yukon brand of ATF was used to fill d gear. took it back to the mechanics and was informed that the jerking will clear with time but I have my reservations. Just spent about 280k with 250k just on the gear box.

appreciate the fact that you guys have answered a lot of guys like me but really need answers so as to sort it out before the ;warranty' expires.

P.S: a colleague of mine said I should take it to a computer guy to reset factory default/ synchronise engine and gear box or smth like that.

expecting to hear from you guys. keep up the good work

They put a 10pin and choped ur money. A scan will prove it angry

Note from the bottom the wires can me manipulated and it will look like a 13pin.

Meanwhile on a clear road count your gears, if you can count 1-2-3-4-5 then it's 13pin if it stops at 1-2-3-4 then it's 10pin and the jerking will not clear.

Meanwhile you spent over 300k on installing 13pin gear why you no locate my shop? I for give you over 50k discount on the original gear plus labour and oil costs grin

2008 Honda Accord 2.0 Vti
Mileage 85675km
Issue : Gear change delays . Gear 1 , 2 and 3 change with delays and easing of pressure on the throttle.
For gear 4 and 5, car wouldnt even accelerate pass 100km/h except going down a slope .
Gear Box Maintenance history.
Change gear oil with Original Honda gear oil ordered from bernardiparts.com at 50000km .
Drained and flushed again about a couple of weeks ago still no difference.
Any other suggestions guys

Have the car scanned. You may be having sensor problems. ATF is not always the culprit.
Re: Automatic Gearbox Problems by Nobody: 11:32pm On Jul 17, 2015
@cardoctor

Background:
Around February 2015, my 2008 Honda Accord V6’s radiator leaked. This leakage caused coolant and ATF to mix together. I did not notice this until that car stopped one day. Radiator was then oozing with a brown gunk paste. A lagos island TOTAL Service station resurrected the car but their mistakes while flushing the radiator/transmission made me worried. One of their mistake was that they used a non-Honda ATF. However since I was desperate to resurrect the car and trying to avoid being too demanding, I allowed them to use it lipsrsealed. As far as I remember they did not clean any transmission filter (which a site seems to imply exists) - hence I still have a recurring feeling that tiny gunks might still be hiding somewhere e.g. (torque converter etc.) despite repeated attempts at flushing the gunk by them. Well since they resurrected the car, I did not make a fuss [big mistake angry ].

Sadly not stopping them from using dodgy ATF was a big mistake. This is because over-time the car starting having the following symptoms:
- it no longer accelerates quickly like before
- violent jerks during acceleration (especially when RPM is changing between 2000rpm to 3000 rpm)
- check engine light comes on randomly
- VSA light comes on randomly
- sometimes "VSA", "Check Engine" and "Blinking Drive light" all come on at the same time and then go away randomly after restarting the car.
- car feels slightly sluggish compared to when it was just bought
- symptoms randomly whether from cold start or prolonged use

I attempted to solve the problem by taking it to Honda Place Mile 2, but that was another mistake (chai I was fleeced me grin grin) as transmission problem remained. They apologised for as communication breakdown between their Customer Service Advisors and the actual Mechanics and asked me to bring it back, but I decided not to go back for different reasons ...

I recently went to a TOTAL Service Station (beside Sheraton Ikeja) where they flushed the non-honda ATF and then used ATF DW-1 (which I bought myself). The car’s overall performance slightly improved after that first flush, yet the jerking still remained and accelerating is still not as good as before. As such it feels like things are not yet right. I (God willing) intend to flush the Transmission 2 more times and replace the ATF (2 more times) with the same DW-1. I then hope to see if the problem is solved after the 3rd flush or if am OYO etc.

What do you suggest.
Is it not advisable to also clean the transmission filter.
Since you are based in Abuja, what Lagos Service Centre do you recommend.

Your transmission is a known problem transmission.

Excerpt from http://www.carcomplaints.com/Acura/TL/1999/transmission/:

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999-2003 Acura TL has a known & widespread defect with the transmission.

Honda fixed some vehicles with a recall in 2004 by changing the oil cooler return line. To settle a class action lawsuit in 2006, Honda extended the transmission warranty on some of these Acura TL's to 93 months / 109,000 miles.

Now these vehicles are past the warranty limit, so buyer beware.

hi car doctor. Thanks for the good things you are doing on nairaland.

Please i hear that Mazda cars are prone to auto gear problems. Do you know if Mazda MPV 2001 or 2002 which comes as a standard auto gear without option of manual is prone to having gear problems? I intend buying 2001 or 2002 model but very afraid of auto gear issues.

Thank you again

2000 -2001 solid as a rock.
2002 - 2006 not as solid, prone to issues

You can confirm by doing some research at mpvclub.com

@car-doctor pls. i am planning to work on the gearbox of my Merc v boot sportline 6plugs engine. I was told that it has Sclass gearbox. Problems: difficulty in changing gear and rough gear change with shove etc. I entered into a storm around October last year and i noticed mudwater in my gearbox oil, the mechanic washed it with chemicals before refilling it with 8 1L of Sea Horse atf. I dont know whether it is right oil but it was fine until these problems.

Seahorse ATF on a Benz? one of the worst brands as far as I can tell. I stand to be corrected
