I get a bit relieved when I see that some newly elected state governors are working already while the FG is messing around. Nigeria must move forward!

Meanwhile, IT pros must be involved in this project. He should't just go and employ google or here to bring that service to Nigeria (Lagos) as the service is currently being tested in the US, Germany and select European countries. Employ our IT gurus and pay them to get it done.
But wia are the alternative routes in Lagos? Even if u put all all d cameras in The US in lagos to inform peopl abt traffic, which route is the alternative? What alternative route can u take from Mile 2 to Okoko or from Oshodi to Mile 2 and so on. So let dem fix the rail and repair d bad roads and open up new ones.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has set his sights on drastically reducing the traffic problem bedeviling the State by introducing a world class traffic information and management system.

The globally tested traffic system which has worked for many cities similar to Lagos may have caught the eye of the Governor who wants to see Lagosians spend less hours in traffic and more in their offices and at work, according to the State government.

Investigations have revealed that in the next couple of weeks, the governor will work with some experts to design a system that fits the Lagos traffic pattern.

Lagos is home to some of the worst traffic congestion in the world. Traffic congestion is a daily challenge in the metropolis with highly undesirable socioeconomic and environmental effects, increasing stress and pollution levels and reducing overall productivity. There is an urgency to decongest perennial traffic spots like the Third Mainland Bridge, Abule Egba, Apapa, Ojota and Dopemu.

The State says it will introduce a world class traffic information and management system. A smart network comprising of hundreds of cameras, road sensors and electronic displays have been specially designed to collect and deliver real time information to city commuters that will help regulate traffic.

Highly visible displays and a mobile phone application will flag highly congested hotspots, suggest alternative routes and estimate arrival times – all in real time, according to the traffic management blueprint.

The State government says it realises that information is power and is set to empower Lagosians with more traffic information ahead of time.

Ambode has also said he is confident of reducing the time spent in traffic, drastically improve each commuter’s quality of life and improve the city’s productivity as a whole. The Governor avers that in big cities of the world, traffic information systems have helped improve traffic flow to a large percentage.

Since he took over the reins, Gov Ambode has spent more time trying to solve the Apapa traffic conundrum and other traffic related problems in Lagos.

What Lagos needs is a world class underground rail network and more investment in overground rail and river ferry.

We are both on the same lane on this post. Camera to do lead them to where? Lagos lagoon I guess.
Let Mr. Governor open / repair more internal roads to reduce traffic on the major roads rather than spending several millions (if not up to billion) on procurement and installation of JUST a camera.
The problem is to maintain not to build.

Simply put...the Governor has no real solution to the Lagos problem.
The problem is not the information management system, but the real lack of alternatives for the commuters.
The main artery to Lagos Island is via Eko Bridge and the Third mainland bridge.

This is reasonably deficient given the number of commuters.

The solution is an integrated transportation mix like the one pursued by the last administration of water ways, rail and more road network and decongesting alternatives like the Ikoyi-Lekki bridge.

Invest massively in the infrasture for water transport with highly powered sea transporting ships. Such that we have similar terminal like the ones being constructed for the rail at Badagry, Apapa, CMS, Ajah, Ikorodu and Epe.

Turn these point to meagre Bust terminal or nodes with terminating Bus/train/water network using same terminal but three floors to serve the many individuals.

The rail should be rigorously pursued to completion such that it should come on stream this year.

Invest massively in new road infrasture, with bridges transversing the Lagos Lagoon with nodes in

Ikorodu---------------------Ajah without going through the city.
Mainland------------------ Epe with sub artery to Ikoyi, VI, Lagos Island,Epe and Ajah without going through the existing road.
Apapa-------------------- Satellite Town, Ojo, Okokomaiko artery.
Another decongesting bridge for
Oshodi----------------------Ikorodu Road, Oshodi-mile 2 road, Anthony-oworonshoki axis.

Lastly decongesting bridges at Lekki-Ajah-Badore roundabout

So when the information arrives my phone that Abule egba and agege road is locked down, will I be provided with an alternative route from God knows where?

I think he should be thinking of providing more alternative routes that will take people to their destinations in time as well as more fly over bridges.

You can start arranging cameras when u know people now have options.

People saying transport system can be improved by d use of waterways nd also using train is of course a good point but note that nigeria is not at that stage yet...for us to go into d afore mentioned system we need to have advance more in technology and the cost of maintaining them will be too much for Nigeria to handle.I think for now d governor decision is right and also he should create alternatives roads.

Even common BRT has a poor management system

All these theories....
It's simple, fix the roads, make sure road users law are enforced then enforcement agencies should be strengthened. And the problem is 50% solve..

This is a 21st century innovation. But to think the future, Ambode shud look into the rail and water transport system.
