Ivanovic is very good. There is something people dont see. He goes into the middle to clear aerial balls with his head, partly helping Terry and Cahil/Zouma. That is the edge he has over all the full backs in the league if not the world. That makes Chelsea very secure defending set play and crosses. He is also a big threat going forward and attacking set play.

Since West Brown and Oshea left us, we are left with only the two centre defenders to clear crosses from our box. With a striker, Rooney, the other dependable player to contest and clear from set play against us.

RVP also clear area balls from set play, but he does so without marking a man. Mostly when manning near post. But Rooney usually is assigned to pick one of the best headers of the opposition side. For a lot time last season he was picking the most dangerous opposing player to mark for set plays against us.

Na you know. Rooney headed clear many dangerous balls into our box last season. I heard commentators twice commending him.

Our weakness defending set play has to do with many of our players with weak aerial ability. Our full backs and midfielders are very weak in that regard. The Centre backs, Rooney and RVP are the only ones relied on. Evra will even do better than many players we have, not to mention Brown, Oshea,.

Lastly DDG is still developing his aerial contest in the EPL. He prefers to stay on his line, unlike VDS, courtouis, Illoris, Cech..

carrick is old and Blind is not a DM we can count on. He is even one legged which makes his passes far less fluent than Carrick's. He doesn't have the pace, physic and he is not a tough tackler. Not strong aerially in the middle of the park. He could do the job against small teams like QPR not against big teams and hard playing teams.
