I can't still connote getting off oil and getting educated. The south continues to get educated whether oil or any other primary source of revenue. This your ideal is so flawed cos you are relating education with a source of income. Education simply as to do with getting exposed to the happenings in the world thereby limiting one's ignorance to the bearest minimal. It goes beyond maths and english.
I start by contending briefly with your defintion of education.

In essence education is all about preparing one to solve problems in one'senvironment.

Yes...the South is better educated than the North. But....what kind of education.?

My bother about education in the South is that most of it is to prepare you for a paper job in the Civil Service. It does not prepare many good technicans, problem solvers, even scientists.(Many of our science grads are in.....banks).

Which leads me to my point about getting off oil. Nigeria should use its oil money now to build up the electric power supply, and the railways, and fund technical education....so that we can have industries....which use our local raw materials(which is why I am not fond of the new car assembly plants. It means nothing to me unless Ajaokuta is working)....and by extension jobs . Which means education is of value.

And that is why my solution involves everyone in the community....and an increased focus on technical and vocational education...and less on getting a paper qualification. Nigeria needs technicians. If more technical schools were built in this country....many people would have had good jobs by now.(Instead of waiting for white collar job that won't come).

I'm beginning to pity for these northerners.

Illiteracy is bad.

GEJ built almajiri schools but the northern elites were not happy.

They dont want their people to be educated.

Its really bad.

We need a revolution in this country.

Instead of just raining abuses and curses.
I was still in sokoto when the one built in that city was commissioned, that's my service year. U need to get to that school and see the standard, pure international standard with Latest facilities. As at the time I left sokoto, which was several months after the commissioning, no single almajiri student was there. We later overheard that the school was built by an infidel, so no 1 will go there. But I believe by now, those almajiri boys must have been enrolled in the school.

These kids, it seems, didn't have any ambition to harm anyone. They were fooled into this and it can happen to any child. That said the Almajiri issue has to be addressed immediately and resolutions strictly adhered to. Having kids like roaches doesn't make you a man.

This is what happen when a certain class of people chose to breed poverty.

Musa got married to Aisha, 12yrs at the age of 15, and at the age of twenty, he added two more wives. Each of them has six kids and the trend continues from parents to offspring.
No formal education, no skill acquisation!

They comes out everyday to cry poverty but they are the architect.
Nigeria is not safe but they are the cause.
Nigeria is drowning in the occean but they are the one paddling the canoe.

I appreciate your first approach of redefining education which is in parrallel to my initial definition. The south are yet to climb to that pinnacle of 'education' but at least the level of ignorance as greatly been trampled and as moved them from religion fanatic to religion tolerant. Let start from there, if the north can have 1/3 of what the south have, this problem can be greatly mitigated. Knowledge is like a cancer, with time it will spread greatly.

For the 'pinnacled' education as it relates to platonism, stoicism and the rest(invention), we are way below the strata line. Hopefully, we will dream of it someday and work towards achieving it.

As long as Hausa is a part of Nigeria, Nigeria is not going anywhere.
Hausa have been ruling Nigeria for over 40yrs and destroy everything yet is only a Yoruba man that still believed in their leadership. The Hausa elites are the major problem of their people, they attack GEJ for building almajiri schools, they don’t want their poor people to be educated , they want them to be like that so that they can rule them forever, keeping them and feeding them like animal and use them to fight for Allah, what a useless people?

Rather than formal educate the youth in the North. They channel them to islamic schools and at the end so many bad doctrines have pass through them from their year one. Before u know it they have already become nuisance and religious extremist in our society. Thereby, making it difficult to reorient them back. The North must go for massive education if they want to remedy the problem. They will always running away from educating their people properly becos thats what they use to win elections, under mass illiterate.

Thank you. U know about them. In the North it islamic teaching all the way and formal education means nothing. And this where most of them fall to the wrong hands, at the end they are easy use to cause havocs because an average number of them dont have their own mind or right. They are in cage by religion apart from well educated some of them or those that stay outside their main region. Education is just the way afterall, there are other muslims around the globe living peaceful. And their boarders are just free to anyone which pose another side of threat. The North and their leaders should help Nigeria. The Gov of Kaduna understand better by banning alamajiris. Thanks to GEJ for introducing alamajiri schools thats the right step. Buhari over to you.

sinkhole:
Why cant our security tell logical story? It is obvious those kids know nothing about the content of what they were given, they were probably told that it was just some metal scraps!
It is obvious that the almajiri mentality and the #2500 gift motivated the kids to collect the package!
It is obvious that kids got tired of carrying "pieces of useless metals" over long distances and hence they decided to sell it (afterall its just a scrap!) and make more money!
The almajiri boys have been selling scraps before and hence they some idea about the cost of scraps, therefore there will be some hard and long bargaining with the scrap dealer!
During the long bargaining session, the bomb fuse started burning and before you know it, KABOOOM!
Arresting/maltreating the kids or the scrap dealer will lead to nowhere and they obviously have no usefull information about the bomb.
Wise words.
