freakthingz:The coloured word means ' a complicated situation'. The ability of Leo Tolstoy to have conveyed such a complicated issue in a beautiful manner further gives credence to his otherworldy. intelligence.., |

@Thesonofmark What is the meaning and origin of the word "Double Entendre"? |
| Re: Nairaland Residents' Grammar Diary... by TheRealAdonye(m): 10:30am On Jul 15, 2015 |
I believe this is a word that means two things. Usually used in rap verses. I don't know the origin but I'm gon go out on a limb and say French because of the pronunciation. MizMyColi: |

MizMyColi: "Entendre" is of french etymology. A double entendre is a word or phrase with two meanings. An example of such words is "KingSLAY" which I use to represent a nasal pronunciation of my first name - KINGSLEY- and King Slay as a result of typo-duels I have had online. ![]() |

TheRealAdonye:Yes, you're right, but from what I got from google, it suggests that one of such meanings in usually indecent. For example, the word eggplant could qualify as a "double entendre" Eggplant as in plant, then eggplant as the male kini ![]() cc Thesonofmark |

MizMyColi: "Male 'kini'"? Adam and Abraham sure wouldn't like that disrespect.![]() Double entendrés are essentially homonyms with two meanings. Whether the figurative meaning is lewd or sexually suggestive or not doesn't affect the rule(s). |
| Re: Nairaland Residents' Grammar Diary... by MizMyColi(op): 11:16am On Jul 15, 2015 |
TheSonOfMark:Google thinks otherwise ![]() double entendre |
| Re: Nairaland Residents' Grammar Diary... by TheRealAdonye(m): 11:20am On Jul 15, 2015 |
MizmyColi, TheSonofMark It says Usually, not Always. There are Entendres that are not of a Sexual nature. I've heard a ModeNine Triple Entendre that blew my mind and it wasn't Sexual in any way. |
