On a more serious note stories like this gives the impression that you can pay for God's blessings and to say the truth it is contrary to biblical teachings and christian beliefs. Churches just peddle these kind of tails to get people to give more money to them and this in reality is contrary to the will of God.

Why would you not say that now that you have received your "blessings"? Don't play ignorance when it comes to paying your vows. smiley

A Call For Cleansing

TEXT: EZRA 10:9-11

"And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel" (Ezra 10:10).

Our text notes the cooperation of the Israelites to cleanse themselves of the sin, which had caused them serious national embarrassment. Ezra, since he heard of the people’s compromise, had been much concerned. The princes and elders assisted him to call an assembly. The people felt very sorry for their sin as they gathered in front of the house of God.

Ezra made it clear to them that they had disobeyed God’s laws. When God brought their forefathers out of Egypt, He had told them point-blank not to take wives from among the people around them to avoid a situation where their hearts would turn away from Him. He equally ordered them to pass the instruction to their children. Unfortunately, the Israelites could not keep this divine injunction. For God to have mercy on them, they must confess their sins to Him, send their strange wives away, separate themselves from the idolatrous nations and avoid close relationships with them.

Obedience to God must be absolute if anyone is to be assured of His abiding mercies and benevolence. Without mincing words, Ezra firmly admonished the congregation that sin had made them miss the mark. They must repent and return to God in order to be spared of His indignation and judgment.

If you have missed the mark in your walk with God, you must return to the basics; repent and forsake sin and make restitution where necessary. Tithe and offering, good works and alms giving can never take the place of repentance. The sacrifice God accepts is a contrite and a broken spirit.

Wait On The Lord

TEXT: PSALMS 73:1-28

"But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked" (Psalm 73:2,3).

The ungodly bid to make money is dominant in many societies nowadays. For many, it does not matter how the money is made, since the end justifies the means. It is usual to hear nowadays that a man killed his wife or child for money making. Parents sell their children for money; children arrange for the kidnap of their parents and relations for ransom. Easy money has become the in-thing. A lot of unholy activities are daily going on in the society for the sake of money. This has also crept into the church as many so-called members are more carnally-minded than being heavenly-minded. They have joined the rat race, always comparing themselves with unbelievers.

In our text, the Psalmist says he saw such exhibition of ill-gotten wealth in his time and was envious. What he saw nearly affected his relationship with God as he confessed that his "feet were almost gone" and his "steps had well nigh slipped".

Many believers who were vibrant for the Lord have denied the faith, owing to the allure of easy money. There are those who had served God faithfully until they began to compare themselves with others. They began to reason that there’s no need holding on to the promises of God. They let go of their faith in pursuit of material wealth. Genuine believers must wait on God who has promised to provide all "our needs" according to his riches through Christ Jesus.

Even so, all believers must note that the so-called prosperity gospel is nothing but the devil’s creed to sway unwary pilgrims from their pursuit of heaven. Once the kingdom of God has been truly sought and earnestly gotten, with true righteousness appropriated and Christ’s glory eminently revealed, the lust and crave for money must wane.

A Worthy Investment

TEXT: MARK 10:28-34

"Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee" (Mark 10:28).

Hearing the Saviour’s command to sell all and give to the poor, Peter, on behalf of the other disciples, tells Christ that they had left all to follow Him. It was the best bargain they could ever make in life. By leaving all immediately, and following Christ, they showed that they were willing to follow Him wherever He led them.

A man wedded to the world will renounce Christ rather than the world. Little did the disciples know what awaited them when they “left all” to follow Jesus of Nazareth. As believers, we cannot fully comprehend the blessings that await us until we meet with the Saviour face-toface. Having been called out of the world, the Lord expects that we cheerfully and faithfully follow Him, willing to commit everything into His hand.

Christ gracious answer to Peter’s question reveals that every true child of God will surely receive reward for his obedience, consecration and commitment to the Lord. The rewards of faithful service are both temporal and eternal. While still on earth, the believer enjoys pardon for sin, divine favour, divine provision, protection, peace of mind, support in trials and persecution, among others. Above all, he will spend eternity with Christ in heaven.

You can make the best investment today in things that serve Kingdom purposes. Therefore, invest your energy, time, talent, resources, wealth, etc., to promote the cause of the gospel. Every effort we make to bring sinners to Christ, help the needy and support the church will never go unrewarded, both now and in eternity.

"Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s" (Matthew 22:21)

Taxes have been a part of civilizations for thousands of years. Even our Lord Jesus found the subject important enough to comment on. We all have responsibilities to pay "tribute" or taxes to those in authority over us.

But tribute money is not ours! In fact, the whole concept of a tribute was initiated by God Himself in the tithe. God said that one tenth of the "firstfruits" belonged to Him (Malachi 3:8-10; 1 Corinthians 16:2). The Creator God, of course, is the ultimate Owner of all things (Psalm 50:7-12). We are to be His “stewards” (Luke 12:42; 1 Corinthians 4:2) and have been delegated the responsibility to "occupy" until He comes back (Luke 19:13; Matthew 25:14).

Although we have "use" of money, we also have certain obligations for that money. We may have freedom to do with the money whatever we wish, but we will suffer consequences if we choose to ignore the responsibilities to "render," or pay, our "tribute to whom tribute is due" (Romans 13:7).

We also have the freedom to invest. God richly rewarded those who made eternally wise investments with the "pounds" and "talents" that they received from Him (Matthew 25; Luke 19). The tithe belongs to the Lord and should be deposited in the Bible-preaching church where we fellowship. Our gifts and offerings may be deposited into Kingdom investments that will reap eternal dividends in the ages to come. What are you investing in?

Givers Never Lack

TEXT: 1 KINGS 17:8-16

"And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse... And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son" (1 KINGS 17:12,13).

The Christian life has a number of paradoxes. These run contrary to the ways and understanding of the principles of the people of the world. For example, to be great as a Christian, you must become the servant of all. To go up, you must be willing to come down; and to save your life, you must be willing to lose it! But these are the ways of the Lord that Christians must follow. It is the path of faith.

We see a clear application of this paradox in our text. To sustain Elijah during a time of famine, God sent him to a poor widow. He didn’t send him to a rich man or a widow who had a large estate left to her by her late husband, but a poor widow who had just her last provision and was expecting nothing but death! Through her, God sustained Elijah and her son all through the period of the famine. God’s ways are different from man’s. In accepting to obey the prophet by giving him all she has, the widow accepted death but she got life. She died to live!

Unless we are ready to follow this divine principle, we may never really get the best in life or be who we should be. We must first render our lives to be crucified with Christ and be willing to die daily if we must enjoy the abundant life the Lord has promised. Those who tightly clasp their hands, holding tenaciously to what they have will never be able to receive what God has for them. You need an open hand to receive; in opening your hand, you must be willing to let go of what you are holding in order for God to give you the best that you need. To be filled with the life of God, you must be empty of self and the world. You must die to live!

Tithes and Offerings
February 6, 2013.

"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it" (Malachi 3:10).

Today there is much talk of financial security. The biblical formula in today’s verse, given to Israel, but applied to all, begins with a scathing indictment. "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings" (v. 8 ). What a terrible thing, to rob God. The result of their thievery, in God’s eyes: "Ye are cursed with a curse" (v. 9), such that their financial state was much worse than it would have been had they been obedient. This teaching and promise has not been rescinded (Luke 6:38; 1 Corinthians 16:2; etc.).

God’s charge to us as given in today’s verse is in three steps. First, we are told to obey; i.e., "bring ye." This cannot be considered an option. Secondly, God proposes a test. "Prove me," He says, give and see if He lives up to His promises. Thirdly, trust His promise to meet our needs.

Note that His promise is also threefold. It abundantly covers present needs, for He promises to "pour you out a blessing" unmeasurable in quality or quantity. Likewise, it covers the threat of future loss. "And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field" (v. 11). Most precious is His promise to reward obedience and trust with a special relationship: "All nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land" (v. 12).

Thus we see that with less than 100 percent of our income at our disposal, we will have greater financial security than if we had kept it all to ourselves, thereby robbing God. JDM

Deuteronomy says we shiuld pay tithe once in 3 years, that's paying 3. 3 percent per month, not 10 percent.

Deuteronomy also says we give tithe to motherless, levies, orphans, poor, needy n foreigners d church will never read dis out to u because they want u to bring all ur tithe to dem.

Today we have no levites, thus we need not pay tithe to church or priest again.

Jesus also said nothing about tithe, He said we are no longer under the law n that we will not be judged by the law.
