I don’t care if Congo parades 11 pros- Siasia
by: Segun Ogunjimi

Dream Team VI handler, Samson Siasia has said that his team won’t be jittery confronting all foreign based Congo’s first eleven in the first leg of the final round of CAF U-23 Championship qualifier against visiting Claude Leroy’s Congo slated for Port-Harcourt on July 19.
Congo coach Claude Leroy on Wednesday announced a 23-man squad dominated by 11 overseas professionals for the match, but the former Super Eagles’ Chief Coach told Sporting Life that it is not an array of individual stars that win a football match but playing as a team.
“We are not afraid of the Congolese team. we know that parading foreign based stars does not guarantee victory but playing as a team. But can they play as a team? That is what brings result. We also have some foreign based stars in our team but what we are focusing on is for them to play as a team.
“The advantage we will have over Congo is that the players we have here, including the few foreign based guys have been playing together for some time now and have blended together. They have understanding on how we want them to play as a team, so that is the edge I think we would have over Congo.
“It is not about the number of foreign based players in a team. I am confident that we have a team who can play as a united team and win.” Siasia assured.

I hope this game does nt turn out bad for Nigeria. See how Nigerian football has gone down the drains. Our U23 Team are to play Congo and we are feeling threatened that they are parading 11 foreign based pros.

I have always said it that the U23 team is usually closely as good as the senior national Team. If their are no Super Eagles players in the U23 Team then every thing is wrong with both the senior and U23 Teams. In the past at least 30-40% of our U23 have either had a senior team call up or were playing for the senior team.
The current U23 is jst too below par. Are there no Super Eagles players that are currently 22yrs or less. Atleast I know of 2: Kenneth Omeruo and Aaaron Samuel. But y Siasia has refused to include these 2 players remains a mistery to me.

In 1996 The following players were in the Olympic team as U23s and had already featured for the Super Eagles some both at AFCON and World Cup: Victor Ikpeba, Sunday Oliseh, Austine Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo and Daniel Amokachi.

1n 2000 Olympics also U23 players like: Julius Aghahowa, Pius Ikedia, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, and Celestine Babayaro were already senior team players.

Osaze Odemwingie was even the captain of the 2004 Olympics team that failed to qualify for the Olympics. Others in that Olympic team were Femi Opabunmi, Onyekachi Okonkwo, Obinna Nwanneri and Furo Iyeneme all of which had senior team experience.

In the 2008 Olympic team Players like Obinna Nsofor, Chinedu Ogbuike Obasi, Taiye Taiwo, Victor Anichebe and Mikel Obi were already senior team players (although Chelsea and Marseille did nt release Mikel and Taiwo respectively for the Olympic proper)

So I see no reason y Siasia cannot invite experienced/established Senior players to the current Olympics team. I am just afraid this team is lacking in exposure and experience. It would B a miracle if they overcome Congo after the 2 legs.

All those Saviour Godwin, Awoniyi, Sokari and co that the team is banking on have not even started. By the time players like Mikel, Ogbuike, Taiwo, Oliseh, Amokachi, Yakubu name them were playing for U23, they had already played in Champions leagues. Some1 like Kanu had already won the Champions league with Ajax. Celestine was already a Chelsea regular when he played in 2000 Olympics. Daniel Amokachi was the first player ever to score a Champions league goal and that was abt 4 yrs before he even featured for the U23S. Oliseh had featured for Juventus in Champions league. Aghahowa was already a super Eagles point man when he played in 2000 Olympics remember the fantastic goals he scored at AFCON 2000 in Lagos against Senegal? Even the then home based lads in U23 Team of 2004 like Onyekachi Okonkwo, Ogbonna Okemiri, Michael Ochei and Obinna Nwanneri were the back bone of the Enyimba team that won the CAF Champions league in 2003 and 2004. They were so hot, fired and experienced.

I know some people will see me as always being a critic of our national teams of late. Trust me I have seen national teams come and go for 3 decades our current crop of footballers/national teams at all levels are nothing to write home about.

This your historical analysis has really opened my eyes.
Its quit unfortunate that the authorities in charge don't notice all these. They blindly shift the blame to the Coaches and the players not knowing that the problem is with the whole system and not just from its sub units.

Wenger To Promote Akpom, Iwobi To Arsenal Seniors

By Izuchukwu Okosi:
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has assured his youth team players like Chuba Akpom and Alex Iwobi of regular fist team places if they impress him in the club’s Asian tour of Singapore.
The Gunners arrived in Singapore on Sunday ahead of their first pre-season friendly against a Singapore Select XI side on Wednesday.
The Anglo-Nigerian stars are part of the team to the pre-season tour and could be handed the chance to shine.
Aside from the Singapore Select XI, Arsenal will play against either Stoke City or Everton also on a tour of Asia in the Barclays Asia Trophy on Saturday.
Interestingly, Wenger told Arsenal’s official website that the performances put up by the youngsters could impact on his transfer plans this summer.
“For us it’s important because it’s a football game and the best way to test where you stand in pre-season is to see how far you are and how quickly we can find our game back,” Wenger told www.arsenal.com on Tuesday.
“As well it’s a good opportunity for me to give a chance to players who are on the fringe of the team and to see how close they are to contributing. That can influence my decisions before the transfer market is over.”
Iwobi, a nephew of former Eagles captain, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, has officially made known his intention to represent Nigeria at the senior level despite being an England youth international, but Akpom who played a couple of first team matches last season is still undecided about his international future.

Rivers Govt Plans Massive Support for Dream Team

Dream Team

RIO 2016 QUALIFIER AGAINST CONGO
The Rivers State Government has assured Nigerian football fans that the nation’s Under-23 team would not be lacking in support when they take on their Congolese counterpart this weekend in Port Harcourt.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Boma Iyaye, who gave the assurance at a media chat at the weekend, said efforts have been put in place to ensure a memorable outing for the Dream Team VI.
According to him, the Governor of the state, Chief Nyesom Wike, gave the go ahead to host the Rio 2016 Olympic qualifier to demonstrate the importance his administration attaches to sports development.
It is against this background that the state government sets up various sub-committees to give the encounter a befitting organisation and coordination.
Iyaye assured that all efforts are geared towards giving Nigerians and visitors the best of traditional Rivers hospitality, just as he added that Governor Wike has graciously paid for the tickets and as such, fans would be entering the stadium free.
He said the kind gesture of the governor was to ensure that the Dream Team VI does not lack any support before, during and after the match.
He appealed to the people of the state and environs to come out and give maximum support to the team, while also calling for good behaviour from fans in order to ensure Port Harcourt continues to host international matches.
The former Rivers sports commissioner used the opportunity to reiterate Rivers State as a safe ground for all manner of sporting activities, pointing out that the state had successfully hosted several competitions without any incident.
He said the administration of Governor Wike is one that would give leverage and opportunities for youths to develop their sporting talents, adding that Rivers would be a major destination for sports.
The Dream Team VI is already in Port Harcourt and only last Friday defeated Go Round Football Club of Rivers 3-1 in a friendly encounter.
Meanwhile, Head Coach of Nigeria’s U-23 team, Samson Siasia, has expressed satisfaction with the quality of the playing surface at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
The stadium is set to play host to Sunday’s 2016 Olympic football qualifier between Nigeria and Congo and Siasia was left impressed after his team trained at the facility for the first time monday.
“This is the first time I am seeing the pitch because we had been training at the Shell Club (also in Port Harcourt) since we arrived from Abuja.
“I am very impressed with how well the (stadium) has been maintained and especially the pitch which is very good,” Siasia told reporters at the stadium ground.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) set up by the Rivers State Government for a successful hosting of the African U-23 Championship final round, first leg qualifier between the U-23 National Team and their Congolese counterparts in Port Harcourt, has assured the Dream Team of total support in its quest to earn a big win on Sunday.
This assurance was given on Monday when the LOC members led by its chairman, Hon. Boma Iyayi led members of the committee to formally welcome the team to the Garden City‎ at the team’s training session at the Adokiye Ameisiamaka Stadium.
Assuring Coach Samson Siasia that the Rivers State government has mandated them to ensure that they lack nothing in their quest to do the nation proud, Hon Iyaye‎ said they have been working round the clock to not only make the team comfortable but to also ensure that the stadium is in good shape for the game as this will be the first international match to be played at the stadium.

Responding, Coach Siasia thanked the LOC members for all they have done for them since their arrival in Port Harcourt, and assured that the only way they can make Nigerians happy is to play well and win well on Sunday.
Member of the NFF Executive Committee, Barrister Chris Green, who is also chairman of the Rivers State Football Association and a member of the LOC, also visited the team on Monday, charging the players and officials to perfect tactics and techniques for a massive win on Sunday, in order to make the second leg an easier encounter.

Akpom nets Arsenal hat-trick

Chuba Akpom scored a hat-trick as Arsenal reached the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy with a 4-0 win over the Singapore XI on Wednesday.
Akpom pounced to open the scoring before completing his brace from 12 yards after Jack Wilshere netted a penalty of his own.
Right-back Héctor Bellerín set-up Akpom for his third as the Gunners breezed to a comfortable win to set-up a meeting with Everton in the final on Saturday.
Akpom ,19, was born in England and represented the country of his birth at youth level, but remains eligible for the Super Eagles.
"Scoring a goal [for Arsenal] is the best feeling for me, ever, and to get three tonight was even more important, but most importantly the team won - I'm happy about that," Akpom said in the aftermath.
"I think the third goal was my favourite, I'm not the best at heading, but I've been practicing a lot in the summer so to score a header is even better for me."
There was also a start for Lagos-born Alex Iwobi, who impressed down the wing for the FA Cup champions, who rested the bulk of their first team players.

Port Harcourt rains worry Siasia

Nigeria U23 coach Samson Siasia has expressed concern over the rains ahead of Sunday’s crunch 2016 Olympic qualifier in Port Harcourt against Congo as he aims for a big home win.
Siasia has told AfricanFootball.com his team are now adjusting to the weather in Port Harcourt, which has been rather unpredictable.
"We have been training under the rains. So, we cannot predict what the weather would be on match day," stated Siasia.
"We are already preparing for rain ball so that we do not have any excuses because we need to win convincingly in the first leg.
"Outside that everything is going well. The Rivers State government is giving us the best of attention and we are very happy here."
The return leg against Congo will be played in Pointe-Noire with the overall winners advancing to the CAF U23 Championship in Senegal from November.

Zimbabwe, SA battle on the road to Rio

Zimbabwe and South Africa will battle for a place in the finals of the 2015 CAF U-23 Championship when they meet in the first leg of their third round qualifier at Rufaro Stadium on Harare on Sunday.
While South Africa is a seeded team and were granted an automatic place in this final qualifying round, Zimbabwe have had to earn their place by overcoming Swaziland in the previous stage back in May.
The junior Warriors were held to a goalless draw by the Swazis in the first leg at Rufaro Stadium, but a 2-2 draw in the return game in Lobamba saw Kalisto Pasuwa’s side advance on away goals. Philana Kadewere and Ronald Pfumbidzai scored the crucial goals for Zimbabwe.
Pasuwa has named a strong side for the match, including South African-based Kuda Mahachi, who plies his trade for Mamelodi Sundowns. However, as the match falls outside any official FIFA window, it remains to be seen whether Mahachi and the likes of Pfumbidzai and Marvelous Nakamba are released by their clubs.
South Africa U-23 coach Owen Da Gama has had the luxury of a two-week camp to prepare his side for the encounter, and has even been able to rope in the likes of Shaun Bartlett and Deshi Bakhtawar to be part of his technical team.
The South African team includes the likes of Kwanda Mngonyama, Ayabulela Magqwaka, Keagan Dolly, Gift Motupa and Siphelele Ntshangase, who have all been selected in Bafana Bafana squads in recent times.
The return leg match will be played in South Africa on the weekend of 31 July to 2 August. The winners will join hosts Senegal and six other qualifiers in the CAF U-23 finals, to be held in Dakar and M’Bour from 28 November to 12 December.
The top three teams from the continental tournament will qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Sokari out of Dream Team Congo clash

by Samm Audu
Enyimba midfielder Kingsley Sokari will miss Sunday’s crucial Olympic qualifier at home against Congo after he reported to the team late.
Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia told Sokari to stay out after he returned to the country from transfer talks at Esperance of Tunisia on Friday.
“Siasia said Sokari was coming just a week to the match and that is rather late for him to be part of the squad for the match against Congo on Sunday in Port Harcourt,” a team official told AfricanFootball.com
“The player is still in Port Harcourt, where he lives, and he is now most likely to be part of the preparations for the second leg in Congo.”
Sokari, who featured at the recent FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand, has featured in all four All Africa Games qualifying matches involving the Dream Team.
Sokari’s reported switch to Esperance is heading for the rocks while Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid have indicated interest in the midfielder, who has also been capped at full international level.

Wearing the number 45 shirt, Alex Iwobi got his Arsenal first team debut in the match.
The 19-year-old midfielder has previously captained the Arsenal’s under-21 side, and he has represented England at under-16, 17 and 18 level.
Moreover, Iwobi was also picked for the Gunners’ bench for their Champions League clash against Galatasaray in December 2014.

On Wednesday, the teenager got his Arsenal debut in Asia, and that provoked his uncle, Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha, to shout out his family member on Twitter.
Jay-Jay told his followers that he was “feeling head over hills” watching Alex Iwobi in action for the Gunners.
Jay-Jay Okocha, 41, is arguably Nigeria’s greatest ever player, who played for the likes of Fenerbahce, PSG, Bolton and Hull during his illustrious career.
Read Jay-Jay Okocha’s sweet tweet below.

Arsene Wenger talks about Chuba Akpom’s first team prospects after hat-trick

Arsene Wenger could hardly ask for a better start to Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Singapore.
He watched his team sweep aside a Singapore XI in a clinical manner and young starlet Chuba Akpom took the opportunity to impress with both hands.
The 19-year-old forward hit a hat-trick in the 4-0 win with Jack Wilshere also getting on the score-sheet. Wenger praised Akpom in his post-match interview.
He said that the player has something about him that made Wenger consider him a first team player last season and said he definitely has the potential to kick on and become a senior star.

Glo Urges Falcons, U-23 To Make Nigeria Proud

National telecoms operator, Globacom, has tasked the U-23 team and the Super Falcons to ensure that they make the nation proud in their different football engagements this weekend.
Under-23 hosts Congo at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday in the first leg of the qualifying match for the Africa U-23 Championship, while the Super Falcons will play Equatorial Guinea on Saturday at the National Stadium, Abuja, in the first leg of the final qualifying round for the Rio Olympics.
“The U-23 team is doing the right thing by emphasizing intensive and rigorous preparation ahead of the match against Congo. We are confident that the team will excel against the Congolese,” Globacom said in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday.
“The drafting of some of the outstanding Flying Eagles players like Taiwo Awoniyi and Musa Mohammed to the team will stand Nigeria in good stead to beat Congo comprehensively and make the second leg a mere formality,” the statement added.
On Super Falcons, the telecommunication company advised the team not to underrate the Equatorial Guinea national team in order to avoid any embarrassment.
“Equatorial Guinea is getting stronger in Women football and would like to give Nigeria a run for its money, but we believe in the capacity of Super Falcons to triumph,” Globacom further said.
Globacom is the official telecommunications partner of the Nigerian Football Federation and the major sponsor of the Nigerian national teams.

Hello people. Hope we are fine. I just read on another thread that Man City have virtually sealed the signing of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool. My mind instantly drifted to Iheanacho and his prospects of regular first team football in the coming season. There is already an array of stars in the team. Does the coming of Sterling not portend lack of first team action for the young lad? Wouldn't it be better if he goes out on loan and play reguar football than staying behind only to have very little playing time? I fear for Nacho's development o.

Coach Pellegrini knows how to rotate his team by keeping a trim squad. Man City coaches are training Nacho to become the best in the World. Sterling is a welcomed addition because it will Spur Nacho to battle against real top stars like Messi did at Barca when he had Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Guily and Henry attacking.

I am not excited because Oliseh is the most inexperienced coach I have ever witnessed in National team football of a historically top team. It shows a lot how Amaju Pinnick is confused as the head of the NFF.

I will support him but Oliseh's appointment is wrong.

I think they made the right choice , he's d most qualified coach we have now.

Interms of experience , he knows his weakness that was why he came with the expatriate .although I am a super fan of Steven Keshi , but I wil give Oliseh the support because the whole plan on paper looks juicy and they want the team to succeed ...I don't expect anything to happen now but I think the future is bright .
Amaju can't go wrong with the choice of Coach , he has been preparing himself taking a lot of training regarding football matters in the past 15 years and he's surrounded by some of our best player in the past ,as part of the technical study group ... For them to consider Oliseh , I am giving them d support . Bro let's support d Mafia , he can handle the team.

I support Oliseh's appointment. He has a great knowledge of the game, he may not have a good enough pedigree as an actual coach, but where have all those with coaching experience taken the team?

Like lexyman said, he has a good enough CV on paper, i'm eager to see how effective his tactics will be, he has such a vast knowledge of the game theoretically, so i'm eager to see how he applies this knowledge practicallyb

In as much as I dnt expect too much from Oliseh, I believe he can do better than Keshi.

Keshi that brought mediocrity to the Super Eagles. Always prefering faceless players over established stars.

Gusshh Thank heavens that man was sacked.

Ndidi shines in Genk win

Flying Eagles Star, Winfred Ndidi, was in a superb form when his Belgian team Genk defeated Charlton Athletic in their pre-season friendly on Wednesday.
Ndidi, a former Nath Boys of Lagos player, made his debut for the Belgian side in January and has also endeared himself to the technical crew, who considered him as an integral part of the team.
After a quiet opening, Genk came close to making the breakthrough in the 12th minute when Siebe Schrijvers’s strike from the edge of the box was pushed away by Charlton goalkeeper, Stephen Henderson.
However, Ndidi came close to netting his first goal for the team when the resulting corner almost brought a goal for Genk, but Ndidi headed over from close range after getting above his marker.
Playing from the defensive midfield, Ndidi marshalled the centre for Genk as the Belgian side continued to push for the game’s opening goal during the first half.
Johann Gudmundsson forced a save from Genk goalkeeper Marco Bizot at the other end before the home side finally made their dominance count on 36th minute as De Camargo nodded in following a cross from the left.

We’ll eliminate Nigeria again – Le Roy
By K. Busari

Congo coach, Claude Le Roy, has promised to inflict further injury on Nigeria when both sides meet in a 2016 Olympic Games football qualifier in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday.
The Frenchman led the Congo senior team, the Red Devils, to beat the Super Eagles 3-2 in Calabar, Cross Rivers State, during their qualifying series for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. It was the first time Nigeria would lose an AFCON qualifier on home soil; it also culminated into Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the tournament.
Congo have never featured in the Olympic football tournament but Le Roy insists the U-23 side are in their best shape to beat Nigeria and book a place in the African U-23 Championship that serves as the last qualifier for the Olympics.
“We are in an identical position to last year with no one beyond Congo giving us a chance,” Le Roy was quoted as saying byAFP.
“But my team have a huge chance of not only eliminating Nigeria, but qualifying for the Rio Olympics. There is no reason why we should fear Nigeria.
“Congolese football has made tremendous progress recently and we must maintain that improvement.”
Le Roy can call on four of his senior squad for the third-round, first-leg clash – goalkeepers Christoffer Mafoumbi and Pavelh Ndzila, defender Sagesse Babele and striker Sylvere Ganvoula.
While Nigeria received first and second-round byes, Congo defeated former Ghana via penalties when aggregate score had stood at 1-1.
Nigeria coach, Samson Siasia, is not about to take chances by underrating the Congolese. He has included in his squad star players from the Flying Eagles that recently played the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Flying Eagles stars Taiwo Awoniyi, Saviour Godwin and midfielder Musa Yahaya have boosted the team since arriving from the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Siasia assures Nigerians of victory against Congo U23

The Dream Team VI handler has vowed that the east African nation will return home with basket full of goals in Sunday’s qualifier
By Shina Oludare

Nigeria U23 coach Samson Siasia has promised that Congo U23 team will fall in Sunday’s African U23 Championship qualifier billed for the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Claude LeRoy’s wards eliminated Ghana’s Black Meteors to reach this stage and will seal a place in the 2015 edition of the African U23 championship which serves as Olympic qualifiers for Rio 2016.
"I am very confident that Nigerians who will troop out en masse to see our match on Sunday will see one of the best displays ever by the Dream Team,” Siasia told the media at the Hotel Presidential abode of the team.
"As a team, my boys have always created chances, but our greatest problem has been to convert these chances to goals.
“We have been doing a lot of work in this critical area and if what I have seen in training of recent is anything to go by, then I can assure Nigerians that these boys will make them proud by scoring enough goals against the Congolese come Sunday,” he concluded.
Kenya’s Anthony Ogwayo will be the center referee and he will be assisted by compatriots Gilbert Cheruiyot, Joshua Achila and Andrew Juma Otieno. he match commissioner is Alim Konate Aboubakar from Cameroon.

Moses Simon clinches historic Belgium Super Cup

Nigeria international Moses Simon has written his name in gold after he won a first Belgium Super Cup for Gent.
The 20-year-old forward thus opened the 2015/2016 season with a trophy as he won the Belgium Super Cup with Gent with a 1-0 win over Club Brugge.
Gent have twice failed to win the Super Cup in 1983/1984 and 2009/2010 seasons.
The youngster, who represented Nigeria at 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand, was the architect of his team's victory as he assisted Laurent Depoitre for the winner in the 87th minute.
The Kaduna-born star was a 78th minute substitute for Ghana defender Nana Kwesi Asare.
Moses Simon scored seven goals in 17 games for Gent last season after he joined in the winter transfer window from Slovak club Trencin.
He won the Belgium league with Gent last season, which was the first in the club history.

2016 Olympic Games: Coach Le Roy plotting to upset Nigeria again after eliminating Ghana

Claude Leroy
Celebrated French coach Claude Le Roy wants to inflict further misery on Nigeria this weekend when he takes Congo Brazzaville to Port Harcourt for a 2016 Olympic Games football qualifier.
The Le Roy-inspired Congolese Red Devils stunned the Nigerian Super Eagles 3-2 last year in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
It was the first home Cup of Nations qualifying loss suffered by Nigeria and ultimately robbed them of a place at the finals and a chance to defend the title.
Now, the consistently successful 67-year-old Frenchman hopes to repeat at under-23 level what he achieved at senior level and edge Congo closer to Rio de Janeiro and a first Olympics football appearance.
“We are in an identical position to last year with no one beyond Congo giving us a chance,” Le Roy said during a training camp in Atlantic city Pointe-Noire.
“But my team have a huge chance of not only eliminating Nigeria, but qualifying for the Rio Olympics.
“There is no reason why we should fear Nigeria.
“Congolese football has made tremendous progress recently and we must maintain that improvement.”
Le Roy can call on four of his senior squad for the third-round, first-leg clash — goalkeepers Christoffer Mafoumbi and Pavelh Ndzila, defender Sagesse Babele and striker Sylvere Ganvoula.
While Nigeria received first and second-round byes, Congo have already claimed a notable scalp in former Olympics football bronze medalists Ghana.
Botn nations won 1-0 at home and Congo squeezed through after a penalty shootout at Stade Municipal in Pointe-Noire.
Nigeria boast a proud Olympics football record, winning the 1996 Atlanta gold medals after a thrilling final against Argentina and finishing runners-up to the same country at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Former star national team striker Samson Siasia coached the ‘Dream Team’ in China and will be in charge Sunday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in south-east Nigeria.
He has called up Tottenham midfielder Musa Yahaya — nicknamed ‘Iniesta’ as his style resembles that of the Barcelona star — and Sweden-based goal-poacher Taiwo Owiniyi.
Owiniyi got Nigeria out of jail this year in a 2015 All-Africa Games qualifier against Zambia, scoring both goals in a second-leg away triumph after the Dream Team were held at home.
South Africa, whose previous Olympics appearance was in Sydney 15 years ago, are upbeat ahead of a Harare showdown with neighbours Zimbabwe at Rufaro Stadium Sunday.
“This team has what it takes to go all the way to Rio,” believes coach Owen da Gama. “The training camp is buzzing with excitement.”
Uganda coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic says he is looking forward to proving Egyptian TV analysts wrong after they labelled his team a “punching bag”.
The countries face off in Mediterranean city Alexandria Saturday and the stars on show should include two consistent goal scorers, Egyptian Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel Moneim and Ugandan Farouk Miya.
Gabon host Mali and Ivory Coast host Zambia Saturday and Morocco host Tunisia and Algeria host Sierra Leone Sunday in other first legs.
