if CR actively push for the move, £50m will get him cuz of age & he'll presumably have no resale value.

LVG has been very strategic in operation in the transfer market, and that's very good.
While Rooney isn't a natural number 9, he had done exceptional well in the season he played solely in that role, as well as flashes when filling in. I think what LVG is trying to do is to try to see if he gets a proven and clinical natural number 9 (popular or unpopular) to come in boost the strike force, but if he doesn't get at bargain he's looking at, he'd let Rooney resume in that role and get support from Henandez and Wilson who are natural number 9s but are still unfinished products.
Remember, he also is looking at the option of bringing in a top class defender which is looking more like a top priority to him. And also, the striker issue seem to also have a bearing on DI MARIA's status.

good points although I don't see how di Maria's status relate to a striker issue when the man himself is not a CF.
