Jones is still repeating the same mistakes from previous seasons and even i am getting tired of his stagnation.
However if Smalling is to supplant him in LVG's assessment he (Smalling) has to improve his on the ball skills cos its obvious that ability on the ball plays a big role in LVG's CB decisions ( hence the insistence on a left footed CB).

VAN GAAL CONFIRMS PREFERRED FORMATION

Louis van Gaal has confirmed he intends to use a 4-3-3 formation with Manchester United in the new Barclays Premier League season.

The Reds appeared to operate with a system resembling 4-2-3-1 on Tour 2015 presented by Aon as Memphis Depay performed in a no.10 role behind centre-forward Wayne Rooney with Ashley Young and Juan Mata on the flanks. However, it would seem from the manager's latest comments that he sees the position occupied in pre-season by his fellow Dutchman as being part of the midfield three.

"That the midfielder is [sometimes] in front of the striker is not bad because I think you do need variation in your attack," said van Gaal, in a press conference following the final tour match against PSG.

"I like that and I ask for that, especially from Memphis. It can also be Carrick or Schweinsteiger or Schneiderlin once in a while but mostly Memphis. It depends on our opponents."

When asked which formation he will deploy in the Barclays Premier League, van Gaal replied: "More or less 4-3-3. We played that already last season, in the second half of the season, and I have said that is the system I want to use. We played in our shape [on tour] and played how we have to play. That's also where I have been very satisfied.”

From a tactical perspective, the key is probably the attacking central midfield position where Memphis, Adnan Januzaj and Andreas Pereira were stationed at various times in the United States. There could also be an opportunity for Juan Mata or Ander Herrera to prove their suitability to play alongside more defensive-minded colleagues such as Michael Carrick, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Memphis, who is also a candidate for the wider roles in the front three, has been entrusted with the job in each of the four starting line-ups in the US and could be considered the favourite to start there against Tottenham

If that article is true then LVG might be a bit confused. Why play an obvious 4-2-3-1 throughout preseason when you are going to play 4-3-3 in the EPL?

Also if it is going to be a 4-3-3 why play Depay in the midfield 3 when his skill set is better utilized in the attacking 3 preferably at LWF?

I hope this won't be a second successive season of wasting the entire preseason on impracticable formations and player selections?

Maybe he didn't want to use the 433 formation during the pre stuffs... You know his clamouring for creative players upfront.... Maybe he's got the target pinned down... Doc lets wait untill the season kicks off.. .. Of what i have seen, mata has cemented his position in the starting 11

433 last season helped us alot.... we created good chances mid season with.. It . Our problem was the cdm position and attack.... Now we've filled the cdm position.... We need a very lethal striker or attacker.. [winger] ✔ With that, we will grab lots of goals. .. .

See how guys are vexing because we lost a match. When we beat Barcelona all I heard was Depay is a beast, Perreira Is a ghost etc.etc.

Irrespective of results coming from the preseason United still need to plug holes in CD and CF. This is quite obvious and I hope LVG can see what y'all seeing,enough of the philosophies.

1. Our Centre backs (Jones and Blind) played too apart from each other. Centre backs are supposed to stay together always or almost all the time. I saw the two guys apart in highligh against Barca and the goals of PSG.

2. The four men at the back lack understanding. They didn't know how to play a same line offside trap. This actually was the reason we conceded the first goal. Contrary to what people think, it was not Jones fault but Shaw and Blind who kept two PSG players inside. At the end one is forced to ask who Blind was marking and why he left a big hole in the Middle while he knew the offside line was not drawn.

4. Jones took his eyes off Ibrahimovic for the second PSG goal. Jones likes to anticipate a pass and intercept but he got this very wrong at the wrong place. May be it's a mistake and his lack of plenty matches in the position is taking a toll.

Again, I think the two CBs were apart somewhat. Ibrahimovic wouldn't find such an easy space in Chelsea's back.

5. Generally, it was a match between a team in process and a team that has been together. This same team played 10 men against Chelsea at the Bridge and were able to score from two free headers.

6. Our back lines has to decide whether to play high or deep. Blind lacks speed, so it's better to play deep and right together like Terry and Cahil. May be if we saw Smalling and Blind, it would have been easier to draw the line.

honestly LvG will be a FOOL to start benching Herrera again. he should make a choice between Schweinsteiger & Carrick to join Schneiderlin & Herrera in the midfield -3-.

his selections baffle many times & its becoming unnerving, we dropped some points last season cuz of brainless selections & substitutions but he got the pass & I'm sure he knows why.
