The op said read to understand, not read to remember.

To read and understand, you have to lecture yourself and pay attention to everything your lecturer says and ask questions.
Try to simplify whatever handouts you were given. Have a dictionary with you when reading.
Belong/organise a group tutorials.

But to remember, Read slowly, jot the key points and read again. Sleep, when you wake up try to see what you can remember, without opening your books.
That way you know if you're making progress.

Or become a professional crammer. Crammers Don't read to understand, they read to remember.

Its not rocket science. But Niaja lecturers make it seem so.

1. GOD'S GRACE 2. In Socrate's voice: Man Know thy self for the unexamined life is not worth living. Myself then i read in JOHN HARRIS LIBRARY OR MY FACULTY LIBRARY, anything apart from that is just by force, i don't do night class, if i shud go atleast 1hour or 45 mins. And i don't value public holidays cos the libraries are closed hence i dont read much, just a wasted day. GOD'S GRACE JOHN 15V5-6. Prov 3v5. 16v3. Matt 7v7. and know thyself.

Well, there are a lot of factors to put into consideration as regards this issue of reading to understand.

First of all one has to decide to want to read. You can't do anything well if you are forced to do that thing or you feel that thing is something you 'must' do, so you just have to do it.
It's the same way with reading. You first of all have to develop the desire to read. The desire to get the knowledge that the particular book or course you want to read is offering.
The truth is if you don't desire to read, you will never understand as you supposed to.

Another thing one should take into consideration is the environment you want to read in.
Some people like to read in quite environments, some like to read in noisy environments. Some like to read while listening to soft or loud music. Some like to read while munching a snack, or biscuit or sipping from their favorite drinks.
Some like to read with a friend and have chit chats in between the reading exercise.
As for me, I can only understand in a quite environment. One where I am alone and there is no noise.
I also like to walking around while I am memorizing(craming). It helps me grasp it faster.
I am someone who thinks on her feet, so when I am memorizing a passage of a book, I prefer to walk around.

I also like to jot down as I write. Before I read a course, I get a 60/80 leaves exercise book and I draw a thin like down the middle of each page.
So as I read each topic, I jot down some important points.
I have come to the realization that whenever I jot down anything while reading, I hardly forget.
In school, the lecturers normally gave us materials, both in soft and hard copy.
So when I am done jotting down those important points in this materials, the next time I read that subject or topic, I just go through what I have jotted down.

I also try to understand the ways lecturers set their questions. Some lecturers always follow a certain pattern when setting their exam and test questions.
Even in some courses, despite the lecturer handling that course, the method of setting the questions is always the same.
So if you know how these exam question are asked, you would know the pattern you would use in reading.
Some students just ignorantly read everything and they don't pay cognizance to some center key areas where the bulk of these questions are asked from.

Past questions are also important and surprisingly, they are always available.
When I get these past questions, I always use them as a guide as to how to read.
When I am done reading a course, I test myself with these past question to see if I have really covered the scheme and if I truly understand the course and to ascertain how ready I am for the exam.

Group reading is also essential. Is good to always have a group of friends you discuss a course with. It's not necessary you do it with them everyday but you pick a particular time maybe twice a week to read and discuss together.
One thing I have noticed is whatever I discuss any topic with my friends, I never forget it and I also understand it better.

Finally, one thing about this courses is that they are very volatile. So I always try to make sure at every point in time, I able to remember everything I have read.
The way I do this is that I get an exercise book, and from time to time, I try to replicate what I have read and memorized on the book. The more I do that, the more I tend not to forget what I read.

The time one reads is also important. In school, majority of students always read at night. In Uniben it's called Night class. One thing I noticed is that not everyone actually likes or knows how to read night but because their friends read at night, they decide to tag along.
I noticed that my brain is normally alert during the evenings and early in the morning.
So, I always read from 5- 7 in the morning and after classes in the evening all the way till 11-12pm.
Once it's 1am in the morning, my brain stops assimilating so at that time, I just go to my hostel and sleep.

I always read in classes or at the library. And it's not just any class. The way the class is lighted also affects the way I read and understand. I prefer classes that are well lighted.
I also like chewing gum when I read. It also helps me grasp faster, and I don't fall asleep easily.
And when I sit in the class, I always sit at the extreme of the chairs. If I sit in the middle, I just feel uncomfortable.

I also commit what I read into God's hand. He is the one that blessed me with the brain, so I always ask Him to help me understand better.

It's funny that I can relate with 90% of your reading style/culture. Despite leaving the Uni some 9 years ago, I can still recall I did most of all you highlighted up there. Very sure reading recipe!!!

During my time in the uni, I used to know a lady who will not read until 2weeks to CAT or exams, she graduated as the best std in her dept. she also went on to have a distinction in her Masters degree.
If u hear this and say u want to try it, u r On Your Own o.
Diff methods work for diff people. Make sure u discover ur own method especially in ur first year. U don't have to time to keep trying new methods at ur 3rd year.
Above all, na God dey give person spirit of excellence. So ask God and be serious about it.
If u think it doesn't work? Ask me. Both my ist and 2nd degree are there as proof. God is awesome.

Translate all what you read to your local language in your mind. Then, put it in another form (also in your mind). You will understand it perfectly.

Reading and understanding is a very important concept especially for students who want to perform excellently in school.. Firstly, I will start by saying dat d secret of academic excellence lies in CONSISTENCY... Don't skip your study session from the first day of resumption to the day of examination.. Draw a time table and follow it strictly.... Secondly you need to understand how the brain works, repetition of fact makes it stick... You read and revise and not reading alone... E. I.. take your eyes off the book and try to recall what you ve read... Recall the concept without looking back to your book, repeat again and again until u know dat you know it.... Lastly, after you finish reading the subject on your timetable for the day you have to do a short quiz.. Write out all the major topics and subtopics and convert them into questions try to answer the questions..... Be warned... It requires patience to do all these... But I bet you your minimum final result will be a 2 1

Op the key is to start early not during exam period. I discovered this technique in year 2 second semester. I took a political science course in first semester and i got E angry because i never understood what the lecturer thought until two weeks to the exam and it was too late cos i have 6 other courses.

In second semester i changed my reading technique; after every lecture when i get home before i go to bed i read my books and it worked for me at the end of semester i got a B. grin

If its a calculation course the key is to know the formula and constant practice!!!!!! without this you will forget it.

I sleep in the evening and read at night in my room. You have to discipline and believe in yourself that you can do anything with Christ who strengthens you !!!! wink

I read mostly in the nights... Perfect time to assimilate.

When I read, I reflect on it, I do away with the book and try write down all I read on another sheet.

And lastly, I keep saying words from texts that I read even when I'm in the toilet. lol. crazy... I know.
I enjoyed studying at nights too...it's very easy for me to assimilate unlike day time where everywhere is hot and stuffy...
Re: How Do You Read To Understand? by Originalsly: 11:08am On Aug 06, 2015
To read and understand is not an overnight thing....you had to develop that from an early age.At school it involved comprehension..reading short passages and answering questions based on that passage.... ( John's father had four sons....5Naira, 10Naira, 20Naira...what was the the name if the fourth son?) Out of school it involved reading story books and novels which help you read for longer periods and get the gist of all that you read. If you missed these basics it is not too late to start. In your present position I think it best for you to form or be in a study group with your course mates. You read up on the assignment for the day then the group meet for discussion. In discussion there would always be misinterpretations but in the end the group would sort it out. If you discuss something it is so much easier to remember and answer any question based on that topic. Cramming is not understanding. On jotting down....if you don't understand what you are reading or the lecture then you would not know the key points to jot down. When reading....if there is a word you don't know it's meaning then you should stop right there and find out before you continue instead of skipping over it. I'm done.

You are so on point... the secret of good grades is starting off with your courses early, during exam you will only revise and go for the exam...That is the time i sleep and watch film very well because I have acquaint myself with my courses.

in another news: That's when some students turn classes and library to house during exam period. Then i will begin to wonder if i am a serious student at all.

to pass exams in Nigeria, just cram and pour out exactly what the lecturer wants, do not go and show your self especially, if you are not a science student of some sort.

Well, there are a lot of factors to put into consideration as regards this issue of reading to understand..
i finished from uniben and i can relate with everything missclassy penned down..... i knew the brain assimilates best within the first few hours of reading so you will hardly find me reading beyond an average of 2-3 hours and i didnt read beyond 9.30pm..what you read has to be a part of you, you have to consume it and keep ruminating ...i always bought a small note to read with and jotted the first time i studied a material and also jotted the solving of past question in it.. so i could always go back and study it again and again... just find what works with you and be confident once you pick up any book to study and be consistent

TO read and understand : what u need to know is what i called " SELF DISCOVERY" meaning : Know Where(place) to read, When(Time) to read and How to read. The moment you discovered your self u will begin to read and understand. Finally, you need total concentration.

These is the first time seeing u post something reasonable

Mishydoo:
1) NEVER READ MORE THAN 4 HOURS STRAIGHT*d brain is an exitable tissue subject to fatigue

2) ALWAYS TAKE BREAKS 10 -15 MINS

3) REST WELL BEFORE YOU COMMENCE MARATHON READING*rest helps arrange data and store properly

4)BEST HOURS FOR ASSIMILATION ARE EARLY HOURS OF MORNING*after long hours of rest the brain captures anythng fast

5)ALWAYS EAT WELL AND HYDRATE *the brain consumes up to 80%glucose from the body

6)ALWAYS READ IN A WELL VENTILATED ARE *THE BRAIN TAKES UP TO 60% OXYGEN frm D BODY

7) NEVER SNACK OR CHEW GUM OR LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE READING!!! *multiple activity divides concentration,d brain dedicates many neurons to monitor other activities therfore reducing the number dedicated to ur reading

8. IF POSSIBLE,SPEAK TO URSELF WHILE READING *focusing 2 sensory organs, sight and hearing to a task improves concentration double fold.

9.NIGHT SLEEP IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BRAIN FUNCTION,*at least 6-7hrs of sleep every night.

...and as for the haters,I made a 2.1 and ws d BGS in my dept wink

Goodluck!
