Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Mega Party (SDMP) and public affairs analyst, Professor Pat Utomi, has said President Muhammadu Buhari is free to appoint whoever he desires, as long as those appointed have the highest capacity to take the bull by the horn.
In his address, during an interactive session with Daily Independent recently, Pat Utomi who described the criticism as ‘small and petty’, said the president can make all his appointments from one village as long as those appointed can get the job done.

Utomi said: “Let’s get serious. Let’s get to move this country forward and away from all this small, petty issues. To me it is not an important issue and I don’t want to deal with it.”

“The President can appoint everybody from one village. As long as the people can get the job done, let them get it done. That is what Nigerians wanted and that is what they voted for.”

The Political economist also advised Buhari not to be biased in choosing his cabinet members but rather fish out qualified personnel.
The President has been perpetually criticized of appointing only his kinsmen into the presidential cabinet.Some persons from the South-Eastern part of the country believed that Buhari’s refusal to appoint anybody from the region was attempt by the president to punish the region for giving him the least votes during the March 28 presidential elections.

All your efforts in trying to defend the indefensible failed when Buhari declared it himself that he would not treat those who gave him 95% the same way as those who gave him 5% which is now conspicuous in his lopsided appointments so far.

This thing called "geographical zone" is just for political convenience. In reality, The SS and NC are just toooooooo diverse to be tagged as a people. Too many ethnic groups with very different cultures. As SS people, yes we share that boundary, love for marine, fish, and few other things BUT mehn, I don't see my Akwa-Ibom brothers in the least bit concerned about Kachikwu's appointment. We are not happy and we are not sad, jealous, or whatever. We are just indifferent. Most of you really need to get of NL and social media for a while and visit places to learn more about other groups besides yours. This is why I am a strong advocate pf the NYSC program. I think the president should b allowed to choose those he deem fit except where d constitution says u must appoint ministers from each state, because if his government fails, we will only blame him and if he succeeds, only him will b praised, how many people are screaming d names of GEJ's ministers now, all we hear is GEJ failed, even the same south-east he favored with appointment are no where to be found, so I beg free baba make he dey go slow and steady, we the real voters no complain

What does the constitution say as regards ministerial appointment?

Extract of the constitution- section 147
147. MINISTERS OF FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

(1) There shall be such offices of Ministers of the Government of the Federation as may be established by the President.

(2) Any appointment to the office of Minister of the Government of the Federation shall, if the nomination of any person to such office is confirmed by the Senate, be made by the President.

(3) Any appointment under subsection (2) of this section by the President shall be in conformity with the provisions of section 14(3) of the Constitution:-

provided that in giving effect to the provisions aforesaid the President shall appoint at least one Minister from each State, who shall be an indigene of such State .

Despite keyamo's argument that we are not mandated to have 37 ministers simultaneously from different states (fct included) but over the tenure of the president, it must be noted that the constitution requires the president to appoint ministers and ensure the appointment is distributed within all the states of the federation

Lets remind him that some voted for him from South East.
