What experience does he have in this field?

Personally, I am indifferent to Col. Hamid's appointment as CGC. The management team of NCS were lucky that PMB did not appoint a COMPTROLLER or even DEPUTY COMPTROLLER to head the service, They would all have been forced to resign or retire and that would have been a TSUNAMI like shakeup. The rot in the NCS stinks to the skies.
Buhari isn't the first to appoint an outsider to head the NCS, Col. Hamid rtd. wouldn't be the first Soldier to be so appointed. The current BOT chairman of the PDP is a veterinarian Who was appointed as the CG by IBB in 1988 he served till 1994. Gen. Sanni Abacha replaced him with Brigadier (later Major Genaral) Ango who served till 1999. The service did not collapse.
There really is no big deal in Buhari's appointment. Col. Hamid rtd. will direct and oversee the policy thrust and direction of Government while the 6 DCCs will still be in charge of the technical and operational drive of the NCS.

Very very true. It kills the spirit of staffs as they may see that the way to the top is not by giving your best to the agency's establishment but by being loyal to a political establishment

However, in this case, the rot in NPA requires an outsider with discipline and administrative experience. His deputy must be from the agency else, they need a 100% overhaul which may stall the working of the agency for months if not up to a year.

The problem is Nairaland is full of lazy students who never read their books to pass exams but depends on expo. What a serious student need to do on hearing such news is go Google and make some research. But just go through most of posts and you can't help but pity the next generation.

On this, i stand wit buhari 100%. Wat is going on in custom is an organised fraud and smuggling dat needs an honest and tenacious outsider to fix. Promoting anyone within d ranks wuld have bn same of same. Buhari was spot on with dat. Reform nnpc, firs, npa and customs and see nigeria's revenue soar high.

so u think an outsider leading is the solution? Let me assure u this guy the so called CG will spend up to 5years without knowing anything that's happening in the service... He has given oppotunity for customs officers to enrich their pockets.... Customs work is above the way ppl see it, mark my words....... This is as good as saying a locomotive train pilot giving a digital earoplane to pilot..... Mark my words he'll fail woefully

This is how systems get corrupted : absence of knowledge by the head. This buhari is just being narrow and provincial nothing national and merit!

You are quite correct. The most sorry aspect is when you see people giving warped opinion on issues the haven't the slightest idea about.

I think PMB needs a man that will do thorough job not all those corrupt potbelly custom men ...nothing good can work under their leadership

You're one of the few smart folks around, that's why I'm doing this. There's really no law that stops the President from appointing a non custom man as the head of the agency. Osita Chidoka became the head of FRSC from being an Advisor at Mobil, the gist at the time was that the President was impressed with his research in transport management.

Col Kayode Are was appointed the DG of SSS and he was a retired soldier. There was no noise at the time because these guys where brought in to breathe a fresh lease of life into the system. Buhari is simply doing the same thing. The Nigerian Custom Service is a security organization, the new head is a retired Colonel, do you really think it is a case of square pegs in round holes?

First, you need to be a lawyer to have access to NBA leadership. Is custom studies thought in university?

The issue at hand is dicey, except for sm opinions that are awkward: Buhari is trying to put pple of integrity in key positions which is okay, buh professionalism is being abused which is another issue(both have its pros and coins). Buh my concern is my able president buhari is banking on most of his old frnds, exp in the military who are so old (in thier 70s), then where is the position of we youth, the leaders of tumorow.

Oh, u have decided to try to use ur brains a little, but before now u shouldn't. getting to the peak of customs means u have had experience of over 30 years in that single sector..... Thus qualifying you.

Secondly in customs, There is an administrative department, People employed into admin department read university courses that are associated with admin work like pub admin, Bus admin, accounting, economics, etc.

That apart, there exists law banning retired military officers from getting appointment in other fed uniform parastatals like customs, immigration and NSCDC etc .Is Buhari lacking quality advisers or yet to have one such that he cannot think properly?

What I know about Nigerian Customs is that it is the among the most corrupt and most cursed organisations in Nigeria. It is a cult of extortionists and that needs to change. Sadly, sometimes there is a price to pay for change. Customs workers may not like it but Nigeria needs it.

When there is so much inside you may have to look outside for answers!

What group? Professionalism has been rubbished in many FG bodies on the altar of cash.

The president came in on a reform agenda, consistent with which he has now decided to reform the nigeria customs service. Obviously he cannot do that unless he appoints a chief executive from outside the corrupt system, that's basic management, basic common sense in fact.

I have a problem with this guy he has chosen though, seems his sole qualification is the fact that there's no dirt on him, so far. Would have expected Buhari to put in a professional, an academic with industry experience preferrably.Someone in the mould of Dora Akunyili of blessed memory.
