Op congrats on your choice of an academic career. There is something missing in the advice you have been getting so far and that is the issue of research. One of the first things you should do besides starting your masters is to try to publish your undergraduate research work in a journal. Your supervisor and possibly your HOD will be more than glad to assist you in this as long as you include them as authors.
As for the rest, getting a job is tough in every field so just pray for the best.
You don't need to wait for advert especially if it's your alma mater.
I wish you God's grace and best of luck.

What the! How come 4.49, why didn't they complete the first-class jinx. Would like us to talk more on your case

My brother, it's a long story. I saw it coming right from my 300level. I discovered that even if I make straight "As" in my 400 and 500levels(which I did), I'm landing at 4.497. I was already on Second Class Upper (3.52) right from my 100level (that's the most annoying). That didn't deter me anyway, I couldn't stop studying. No need crying over spilt milk. It wasn't upgraded. I thank God for everything. I only believe that I graduated with what I deserved.

It is a plus. Lecturing and research go hand in hand. If you show an aptitude for research and publication early, you will stand out from other applicants.

I'm jealous already. I've always admired my lecturers and wish to join them soon. Besides, I have other good plans for youths. Lecturing will give me that avenue to express myself. I must affect my generation in the little way I can, even "me" cannot stop me. So help me God.

Don't be jealous oo! You'll get there, I'm sure. Wow! Can't wait to hear of your plan ooo. Lecturing is really a good avenue for one to express oneself.

I like people who are determined. I hope you won't mind a Hausa and a Muslim man praying for you.

tks 4 d mention..I'm graduating frm Ambrose Ali University, frm d department of education management.the staff strenght is pretty strong..most times 3 lecturers share 1 course..wot ar my chances??

Ekpoma is a good school. But I think your chances will be limited there. Why not try these new Universities? Your school's pedigree will help you.

Not at all. Infact, I had a Hausa and a Muslim boyfriend. He was a corper. He's still a very good and close friend. I need prayers my brother. The struggle hasn't been an easy one at all.

For a GA, and even AL, research isn't particularly important. Research only becomes an issue when one is applying for LII and above

Am in a similar situation, though am passing out next year, graduated with a 2.1 (4.26) n was d best graduating student in my department. I had a chat with a professor who told me 2 apply for masters immediately after service. He said during my masters I can now send my application via the department to the registrar's office. He said I shouldn't apply elsewhere because most federal and state owned universities prefer 2 absorb young graduates who were under their tutelage.
WISH U d BEST BRO
It's same here bro. I made 2:1 (4.23), also the best graduating student of my department. Was told to come and apply when I pass out next year.

Determination is very vital to making good grades.

Don't miss lectures please....

Don't joke with that "just one mark". One mark placed me on 4.497. There's this 300level course I scored 69% - I had a B. If I had 70%, the story would have been different now coz I would have graduated with 4.5 (First Classy).

You may have to limit your clique of friends coz they can be a serious distraction at times.

Study as if all depends on studying and pray as if all depends on praying (I.e if you believe in the efficacy of prayers).

Wish you all the best. See you at the top!!!

Nice comments from you guyz.

Getting a GA job is not really easy even if you graduated with a first class. It takes God's grace and lots of connections to succeed in the race.

I graduated from a first generation federal university with a second class upper( 4.2) and a sound knowledge in my field. I have discussed with some lecturers in my department about getting a GA job.

I was told to apply for a master's program in same university then push my application with the help of my HOD and other key professors in the school. It has not been easy because of the protocol in the federal system.

My advised to those aspiring for GA jobs is to get other jobs doing during your masters programs before the GA job surface because it can take a long time to complete the process if actually you stand a better chance of getting it.

Most importantly, if you have passion in lecturing and ambition of becoming a lecturer one day, never stop studying, attending seminars & workshops related to your field, get professional certifications, acquaint yourself with the modern software related to your field.

Just keep learning and getting the knowledge. One day it will stand you out.

May God help us...

Yes, I mean you should. They employ a lot of GAs and ALs. No, it doesn't mean that you have to take your Masters there as most of them have not started PG programmes. Apply and continue with your academic endeavours. It will be a plus to you.

I wish there's one too. Be confident bro. You'll get there, I assure you.

Teaching assistant. Does it work in Nigeria?

Very well. I cant say for other schools though. In my department previous teaching assistant were retained as assistant lecturers. The current ones have completed their masters ptogram and are in the process of conversion. Most times it is advisable to find an area of specialisation where there is shortage of staff in that case you would have a better chance. Even though you are not retained, a TA position would offer you more chances when you apply to other universities for an AL position.

Lol in futa where I graduated, getting a GA job is as easy as ABC. Infact it has been approved by senate that first class graduates that are interested in lecturing should be retained without hassles. Although the law might change soon as more students are graduating with first class and the departmemtal strenght are already filled up. My appointment letter was ready before I even finished service. Even if you apply after service it should take 2 weeks max for the VC to approve your request

Why not? Especially if you are the best graduating student in the department; but it doesn't end there. You can see from the comments here that so many processes are involved. First thing first, study hard and get your grades....and all other things shall be added unto you grin

Well, it might be easy in futa but where I come from, its very hard even with a first. The system there is so corrupt. Terrible politics playing out in academics these days.
