In the defence of Dangote

the last time I checked,, minimum wage in the country is 18,000...the complainant stated that some are paid as much as 40000, none is paid less than 20000..

so what's the fuss all about.
Am sure you don't know what is called MINIMUM wage

u know, some of these expatriate were brought in to do exactly what they know, i.e they studied for the work, hv been working the work, so they knop the work.
and then again in NG we dont hv strong enough facilites to train Nigerians in that line of work, so will u then suggest we use half baked ppl to do the work?
thats the reason expatriates are brought in.
if nigerians could handle certain things efficiently, then there would be no need for these ppl.
But i do agree with you on the overvaluing thing, expecially d amt paid to em

The disparity in pay btw expats and Nigerians working in the same company and doin d same job, is just too wide and something needs to be done, even where the Nigerians are not doin the same type of jobs as d expats because dey r not skilled, the difference in pay is enormous.

These our Nigerian billionaires are contributing to the unemployment prob by givin jobs to expats that Nigerians are qualified to do. That's why local content laws shld apply to all sectors and not just oil n gas, power and telecoms.

Those workers may have spent several years working for dangote, hence, they demand salary increase.I met with some dangote staff who were disengaged two years ago at a pension office. They complained bitterly about the poor remuneration and pension package that the company remitted to their pension account after working for 20years in his company.Mere look at their appearances tells that they worked as slave rather than employees. They look malnourished.

Quit or look for something else if they think you are being underpaid. If they are being paid the amount that they agreed to when they signed their work contracts, then there is no problem. If they are being paid a different amount than what was agreed to, then they have a case. Else its business as usual

There is nothing the government can or will do about it. Nigeria does not have a private sector minimum wage law. Even in the public sector where minimum wage exists, they have pegged it at N18,000. EIGHTEEN-FVKING-THOUSAND.

If they deem 18,000 sufficient, I wonder what they will say to someone complaining about 20,000.

Same shitt different toilet. 18k minimum wage vs the tens of millions paid to Law makers etc.
Same as the scenario being complained about.

That's like reporting an armed robber to Boko Haram.

There are other benefits that accompany it.

I see Dangote truck drivers everyday! I mean everyday! They all line up their trailers near my company to load cement. They can be on the queue for days waiting for there turn to load and then transport to other states. I see the harsh conditions this drivers live in. Right on the express road. The bring out their mats and lie down under the trailer under rain or sun. They carry there stove put it beside the truck to cook little food to eat. In fact they live and feed very poorly. The most annoying thing is they poo on the same open road where people pass.
I look at this people and wonder why in the world they would would be working like slaves for such a wealthy person yet living like peasants.

No be only Dangote dey guilty of this, we have many of them, the likes of Adenuga and other super-rich individuals subject their workers to such inhuman conditions. The most annoying thing is that the government will still give these slave masters national awards. Really disheartening!

If you're employed in a government parastatal or you find yourself in a similar environment as the aggrieved drivers, and you're being given 18k-20k per month for yourself, your wife and your kids, would you still make this statement?

Driving (long distance) is a very dangerous job. You're away from your family most of the time cos you spend days on the road...you're constantly exposed to road hazards such as accidents, armed robbers, breaking down of your truck in a remote environment thereby leaving you stranded for days...etc.

If you ask me I'd say 20k a month isn't worth such risk. The pay should equal the risk.

I can't carry bags of cement as a job even if I was paid handsomely. That job is hell. That kind of job can be disastrous to one's health in the future.

Because of Inferiority complex...that deadly cancer-worm has eaten up the brain of the black man to the extend that the black man hates himself and doesn't feel that anything good can come out from what he does if he doesn't involve a white skinned fellow.

The black man hates his brother, and can even kill him if it would make him gain favour with the white man.

The black man prefers to spend billions on a white man for a project that his fellow black brothers can do perfectly for a far more cheaper amount.

The black man prefers to patronize the white man's products and refer to the one's manufactured by his fellow black brothers as inferior. And even go as far as mocking people who purchases them.

I can go on and on...

Now you understand why we pay expirates 10times what we pay our citizens. And the annoying part is that most of them do practically nothing...they just sit in well air-conditioned offices, give instructions, collect their millions and head back to their various countries. Whereas our citizens who labour under the sun and rain for the sake of the company's growth are being treated like slaves.

Truly there was a country...

lolaxavier:
Transport staff of the Dangote Cement Company, Obajana, are at loggerheads with the management of the company over poor remuneration, threatening not to resume work until their demands are met.

The workers who barricaded the entrance gate on Friday did not allow some management staff to drive in to the premises.

The workers who chatted with Vanguard at the premises of the company in Obajana,Friday, asked President Muhammed Buhari to beam the anti graft light on the business Czar, Aliko Dangote because he is underpaying for labour, thereby exploiting them for his private gain.

They called on Presidency to implore Alhaji Aloko Dangote to implement workers’ welfare measures and look into demands for salary increment in view of the economic situation which is biting hard on their families.

A worker who simply identified himself as Chizoba said they are the ones doing the work which has rated Dangote as one of the richest in the world.

“We implore the President of Nigeria to advise Alh. Dangote to place the workers’ welfare on the front burners to ensure industrial harmony at the company. We cannot be working for one of the world’s richest men who will in turn, be paying us peanuts as salaries”, he said.

The workers said it was unacceptable for management to be paying them N20,000 naira per month when some of the management staff earn as high as a million naira per month.

They said they cannot be slaves in their own land.

“For more than 5yrs the company had been promising us increment and promotion. ”
Another staff Usman Garuba said they have been working for years in the company and the management kept promising them better welfare packages but have failed.
“The last meeting that we held with the management they promised to implement the salary increase within one week but they have failed.

“We added two days and now another one week has elapsed. We demand that a top management officer from the head office come to address us if not we are going to continue the current strike”.

The workers said they are ready to go to any length to achieve their objective.
“Some of us are taking N25000, some N30000 and some N40000. They are paying the expatriates N2M monthly. If they don’t need us let them sack us”, Garuba said.

Efforts by our reporters to get the management’s side of the story were rebuffed as they all declined comment on the issue.
