I don't know why some ppl here tend to pick up on posts and read their own meanings into it without carefully analysing and understanding the intent of the person's post. Its obvious here that his statement is not affirmative, it's just a possibility and I don't see that as an insult or disrespect in anyway because what he stated can be a possible cause of rejection. Let's just stop this attacking behavior and try to get the true message of a post instead of raising issues pls. Motivation letters and cgpas might not be good enough just as we have strong ones so it's just a speculation and his own view with no intent to accord any disrespect according to the post. One luv

Bro his statement was affirmative. He clearly stated that the other person didn't miss the admission because of his lack of English Proficiency exam results. How affirmative do you want him to be again before you realize he was affirmative? Besides Ahbbiey has been very polite in her approach on this English issue

Not trying to look for a fight and I know you stated your opinion but did you list them im the order which you wrote them?

Did you write TOEFL first and IELTS last?

The higher score on IELTS can be atributted to previous experience with the test.

You got better as you rewrote so it felt 'easier'.
Both exams are simple to be honest.

People not used to using computers may be affected in TOEFL that's just it.

(That is of you wrote TOEFL first and IELTS last though, if not disregard)

Improve your computer usage skills, it would be a walk over.

Plus I want to believe that computers would be used a lot in school so getting used to it should be an advantage.

I am not trying to encourage or discourage anyone from picking either exam, they both serve the same purpose, if you are not ready for either exam you will fail easy or not.

Smiling: Sis, I studied electronics/computer engr for 5years and luckily had me a PC and later a laptop all through my studies (school and certifications (more than 5) mostly done on my PC). This is just to try and point to the fact that I am close to being a native PC user grin .

In the order I took the exams

TOEFL 106 attempt 1(lowest score in reading 24, highest writing 30)

IELTS. 8.5 only attempt. Lowest in writing 7.5, highest in reading 9.0

TOEFL 107 attempt 2. Lowest in speaking 23, highest in writing 30)

Reasons why I wrote them 3times? Inbox me cheesy.

I didn't need to get better at these exams because I do not need to read for them so I can only be objective in my opinion when I say that from my experience, whether they make both exams CBT or not; IELTS is the easier all things maintaining status quo.

But then what do I know...

Issue has been buried since! I got admitted into 4 programs with the letter of proficiency but I missed others because of the same letter! I used RWTH for my example because it was boldly written on my letter of rejection. I even uploaded an email I had from OGVU to prove the point that NOT ALL SCHOOLS ACCEPT THAT LETTER and somebody is coming to tell me trash!

NellyB, given that we know each other off this thread, I am highly disappointed in you!

No need to inbox.

Sorry for the unclear post I was actually referring to those who might want to run away from TOEFL because of the 'scrolling up and down' not you in particular.

Like I said before you can disregard my deductions if IELTS was not the last English proficiency exam you took.

Well future applicants, any choice you pick is yours to carry.

Pompido said he did not need to read for the exams and he got good scores on them. I know a number of other people that did little to no practice for the exams and they did well too. It goes to show there is nothing to these exams however a little practise will help, real time practice so you won't be overwhelmed.

(PS the above paragraph is not an insult nor an intended insult on any person(s) my point is either exam is simple enough for you to pass, no need to ask TOEFL or IELTS, take which ever you want)

Please, does mean all sections of IELTS are paper based except the speaing?. Have done TOEFL before not IELTS.

Yes. You get to do the speaking first on a different day. Usually on a weekday in the week you will be writing the exam. Say you take speaking on Wednesday, the remaining parts will happen on the Saturday after.

Bro my point was directed to the part of him not disrespecting the fellow with suggesting the probability of a motivation letter and cgpa dt is not good enough, it's his own opinion. Besides I do not support using proficiency letter alone in all applications cos I know writing an English test is also a boost to an application. Maybe u dint get me well

The choice of which language test to take is dependent on the individual. The fact that some people say one is easier than the other doesn't necessarily mean that will apply to all.

I have written both (some more than once) so I think I can make a few statements about both exams.....but at the end of the day, it still comes down to those statements being my "opinion"

My Scores

TOEFL Test 1: 106

TOEFL Test 2: 107

IELTS: 8.5

Want to know my opinion? IELTS is the easier one of the two!

My reasons range from the fact that IELTS is paper based and the speaking is usually like freestyling with ideas about the topic being handed to you, the reading is like WAEC passages where you can easily trace your answers to parts of the passages etc.

Compare this with scrolling up and down the computer screen looking for answers and having to type answers to questions (scored 30 here both times) and listening to passages to remember everything they discussed when questions come up...etc

So as you can see, I prefer IELTS and that is my view.....

Meine Zwei Loffeln ist dass yyou do your homework and see which exam style gives you the edge, then go blast that particular exam.

Eine Liebe

P.S: your score matters.... the higher the better.....remember, getting admitted to a course is a competition so you have to put your best dress on and your best foot forward.

8.5
Oga you be badt guy oh...
Only an intelligent few score 8 and above..

You my oga are highly intelligent!!!

Of course, the score matters. Can you imagine the impression an IELTS score of 9 would do to your application? cool cheesy
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Obiwannn: 4:29pm On Sep 06, 2015
kilo4sure:

The issue is quiet straightforward in my opinion, I think with the exception of kiel, if a skool says u can provide letter of profficiency, that should suffice except for competitive courses where there are more stages in the application process. Ielts/toefl plays minimal role in the admission process for many schools, even for kiel it has the least score of 4 compared to other criterias. its' purpose is to show that u'll understand your course in its language of instruction(English).

SPOT ON!!!
To add, when all criteria for admission have been met and you still have two individuals having same exact profiles competing for just one slot, don't you think that the often looked-down IELTS Score could be the deciding factor? I would not encourage mediocrity. If you must take the test, you should aim high so as to open more opportunities to you, else when the chips are down, you just might have lost your only competitive edge.

In fact, all you 2016 applicants, don't bother writing IELTS/TOEFL, just get a proficiency letter. For the BSc hopefuls, you can get one from your secondary school, as we now have people here whose bodies are in Nigeria and their spirits are with all the admissions committees of all the higher institutions in Germany!!

Are you kidding ? Cost of living in Germany is not so high. So far, it's the cheapest that I know of in the EU. You could even get a dorm for 200 EUROS. Try Milan or Copenhagen, that's the least you'll pay for a shared double room. Studying abroad is expensive and it sometimes, costs a fortune. But keep in mind that it is worth it. International degree and global connections don't come so cheap.
victz:
@Zeeblamjo1, Futurewise11, DanIndia and those currently living in Germany. Please, why is it that the cost of accommodation in Germany is so high? Is it that there are lack of availability of housing/infrastructure in Germany or what is exactly the problem? It's like this problem is also affecting their own citizens. A German student studying at the University of Tubingen decided to be living in a train because of this same problem. She said that the cost of living in a train is cheaper than keeping her rented apartment in Stuttgart. And this problem is almost everywhere in Germany. It's even worse in bigger cities like Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt etc.

If a student should be paying €300 per month out of €670 withdrawn from blocked account monthly for accommodation and another €90 for insurance it means that he/she will be left with €280 for the rest of the month. I know that student jobs after few months can serve as compliments but is there nothing the government is doing to address this issue?

So you HAS got these marks without having to read ? I promise I won't say GERRARAHIA.
Impressive scores by the way. I'll strongly disagree with you if you tell me you didn't have to practice for the IELTS writing though grin. Even a native English user practices for the writing tasks as they do not weigh your marks on a proficiency scale but on Analysis and Presentation.
