Me too. Never thought this matter would be brought up even in the media to begin with.

Just as the death penalty stopped kidnapping in several states in Nigeria, so the same punishment would make public officers think twice before signing that paper, cheque or form to redirect the money meant for the Nigerian people to their private accounts.

Imagine the former Governor of Edo state, Lucky Igbinedion was found guilty of misappropriation of Edo people's money amounting to billions of naira and was give a fine of 3 million. Chai!!!

Governors won't support this as well as National Assembly members.

But Nigerians want any and everything that could be done to put an end to the menance of corruption.

If any public officer is found guilty of looting our money, firing squad please.

Death penalty will b too harsh.I would have preferred anybody guilty of looting should forfeit. 99% of his total asset n longer jail term.
It won't stop corruption.

Nigerians are very daring and only a death penalty would stop corruption.

Serving jail time (not house arrest o), with hard labour and public community service, after they must have been made to return all they looted, along with every asset acquired and every single investment made from same, with the appropriate accrued interest should be enough deterrence.

Re: Governors Reject Death Penalty For Looters by Godsonkemz(m): 8:41am On Sep 11, 2015
Despite the fact the fight against corruption is a welcome development and it will go a long way to improving our economy and restoring sanity in our government offices, death penalty is not an option in our present democratic settings. Due process, a key element of democracy should take its place. Death penalty was adopted during military regime in Ghana but the fact remains that we are no longer in dictatorship regime. Life imprisonment is enough to serve as a deterrent. Nevertheless, let the rule of law take its place.

If corrupt people were to be executed, I wonder how many nigerians will remain.

The mechanic who sells fake vehicle parts to you as original is corrupt, the student who lies to his parents and collects excess of his school fees is corrupt.

The small girl in your area whom you send to buy you rice of N100 and she buys 80 and pockets N20 is corrupt. ....My friend read well b4 commenting. .....talking abt looters of nation's resources.

I could go on and on. Aside that, the human rights community will be on our neck if Nigeria decides to implement capital punishment for corruption.

The laws are already there. Let an ex-governor or president be jailed for just 5 years, it will serve as a warning to the rest.

grin grin grin Olisa Metuh go be like "APC should exhume the corpses of dead looters since 1960 for trial before jailing live looters".
Re: Governors Reject Death Penalty For Looters by choicelynk(m): 9:07am On Sep 11, 2015
Everyone agrees that there is a problem with the extant laws of this country. Capital punishment or life imprisonment - the laws should be strengthened, looters should rot in jail and be made to forfeit all their loots. God help Nigeria.

What an irony. They all passed a bill that KIDNAPPERS be sentenced to life imprisonment/death penalty.
Tell me, what is the proximate cause of kidnapping, armed robbery, joblessness, unemployment and all other social vices?......it is CORRUPTION!! In simple terms "let's kill corruption before corruption kills us all".
shocked shocked shocked

Re: Governors Reject Death Penalty For Looters by Nobody: 9:22am On Sep 11, 2015
That's the kind of solution u get from the so-called youths who want to be leaders of this generation.

What makes them think that even the death penalty wontt be political or setup? What we need is for our judiciary system to be strengthened.
Thank God we have the serious ones still studying their career jobs out there. They will be the ones to CHANGE things and TRANSFORM this country on to a +ve path.

What works for other ccountries is not assured to work for Nigeria. Saudi Arabians do tthat shi'! It won't work for a country with no unity.

Our schools are deadened! Discipline must begin from home!

I'm not in support of death penalty as is been proposed. Embezzlers of public funds should be made to serve in jail. I would propose at least a 10year jail time with hard labour. And those in charge should and must ensure that this is done, squarely. Nigerians, we, only see 'corruption' as only stealing of public funds which is not supposed to be the case. Corruption is beyond just stealing public funds. And to all those chanting the death penalty mantra on Nairaland get ready to be executed because you are just as corrupt as the so called corrupt public office holders/politicians. It doesn't matter how much you might have stolen or how much the public office holder stole. The fact is that stealing is stealing. No small corruption, no big corruption.
