Trust the Process: Taking a deeper look at Louis van Gaal’s possession control

Prelude: “Trust the Process” is a tagline familiar with NBA team Philadelphia 76ers who are in rebuilding mode and are in the process to become a perennial contender. I found it seemingly apt that the tagline also applies to Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United. This is not because there are any similarities between the two franchises but because there is a bigger picture in both instances and a method to their madness.

Manchester United’s performances under Louis van Gaal can be best described as either unconvincing yet effective or adequate yet insufficient at times. The quality of football has not been pretty and the hangover from Ferguson era has left a nostalgic stain in the hearts and minds of the fans. They have convinced themselves that United always played exciting football, and scored boat loads of goals. United under Ferguson certainly scored a lot of goals but the football, especially towards the end of his reign was not pretty by means.

When Van Gaal took charge after the debacle that was the Moyes era, he promised exactly that; attacking football. But he also insisted that it was a process. Now in the second year of the Dutch master’s tenure at Old Trafford, people are still left wondering what exactly is this philosophy and process the manager speaks of.

Philosophy and the Process

To understand Van Gaal’s philosophy, it is important to also appreciate the ideas Van Gaal is trying to integrate within the squad. United have been able to dominate possession in majority of the matches they have played under him. The Reds have been able to achieve that mainly because they have played with tremendous organization and compactness. A greater emphasis is being placed on pressing opponents deep into their half; which in turn has helped stabilize the defence. Often accused of being weak at the back, United have maintained one of the best defensive record’s in the league.

Many mistake controlling the possession is Van Gaal’s philosophy; when in fact it is a byproduct of another major component. Irrespective of formation, pressing the opponent is key to Van Gaal’s system and process. To comprehend this, you have to understand what counterpressing is. What it essentially means is to press the opponent as an organized unit immediately after losing possession. While transitioning to defense, the entire team hunts the ball to win it back and prevent counterattacks. Last year, United led the league in successful man-oriented geggenpressing/counterpressing percentage. And compared to top European teams they ranked close to the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona. This season they have continued to build on that and have shown remarkable improvement in defensive transition and organization.

The system and 4-2-3-1

The 4-2-3-1 system is designed to outnumber the opposition in midfield. It gives the team the required flexibility to support both the defence and attack quickly. When in possession of the ball, there is an attempt to stretch the play and increase the distance between the rows. The below image shows how the formation is fluid and can change to a 4-3-3 or diamond in attack. In this system, it allows United to recycle the ball and switch play to create superior number situations with reinforced roles of the defensive midfielders (no 6s). If the left and right midfielders move forward, they can become wingers. If one of the defensive midfielders or centre-backs join the attack a strong attack can be developed.

When not in possession, the shape can revert to a 4-4-2 or a 4-1-4-1 system as they set up pressing traps to regain the ball. The pressing traps are used to shut off angles and force the opposition to play the ball where you want to.

Controlling the possession is impressive but what is far more important to the process of attacking football here is what is done with the ball after regaining possession. When a team is able to dominate possession, it gives them freedom to also control and move the opposition however they want. While United have been able to master the defensive transition, on the other end they have struggled to maintain their attacking transition consistently. Although they have been able to quickly disrupt the opponent’s shape, they have struggled to circulate the ball higher up the field with pace and creativity to take advantage of it.

The decisive factor for this system to work successfully is for the entire team to work together. Each player has a defined role and need to maintain structure and discipline. You need players that are highly intelligent and are able occupy the zones and create space for one another. This is extremely difficult to master and hence United’s struggles in attack is not entirely surprising. But once the team becomes fluid and the transitions can be mastered, the team can easily dominate.

(I had an intriguing conversation with @EddieTrulyReds regarding this earlier last week and hopefully his piece on squad synergy will help you understand this more)

Personnel and Pace

A glaring need that has been evident for a while has been the need for pace and creativity in attack. Currently a lot of the problems are focused on Mata and Rooney. Rooney has struggled to play the lone striker role and has not been playing off the shoulder of the defenders. On the other hand, Mata has the tendency to veer centrally instead of stretching the pitch. The Spaniard’s preferential vision and lack of pace means we become one-dimensional in attack; trying to funnel attack through the left hand side.

The addition of Martial and Memphis should certainly help this season. But they are both young and will need time to grow and settle down. With six new additions in the summer, it will take time for the squad to build chemistry and learn the Louis van Gaal way to perform according to expectations. Adem Berkay here points out the previous systems and the type of managers our new additions have worked under. All these players have a history of working under highly tactical managers in different positions. They fit the mold of multi-functionality and add balance to the squad.

Conclusion: Why should you trust the process?

To recap, as mentioned before, for the system to work everyone in the squad need to work as a unit to make it successful. With the major overhaul the squad went through this summer, it certainly stalled the progress United were slated to make this season. But the squad is currently vastly improved and has strengthened in areas that were neglected for years.

Martial exhibited on his debut what wonders an adept dribbler can bring to the attack. United create plenty of overload situations with their style of play. Once they are able to improve their attacking transition, they can get their wingers and fullbacks in one on one situations against opposition defenders. This will help open up space and stretch the pitch, that will allow for more free-flowing football, more chances, and in turn for more goals.

Even though United may not look like title contenders right now, they are close and have the potential to become one. The football may look aesthetically unpleasant right now but United are playing better with each passing week. They have the prospect to be even better with a few more additions to the squad. But getting almost an entire new squad of signings to settle in and have an immediate impact is unrealistic.

Van Gaal’s strict management style may also be a hindrance to the squad reaching its full potential. Only time will tell if that is the case. Eventually the club may require a slightly more flexible and personable personality to take the squad forward. But believe it or not, Van Gaal’s process and instilled philosophy will bring United back into the upper echelon of European football. His process is going to leave behind a squad that could become a perennial contender at home and in Europe for years to come.

This crap and was probably written by one of van gaals assitants or associates in the press! The fact of the matter is under gaal united have what is known in footballing terms as a lot of "sterile possession" with a lack of attempts at attacking transitions by individuals or the team when approaching the final third of the opponents area!

All they do is pass sideways and backwards and when all else fails "dr fellaini" is brought on to act as a "route 1" outlet! In recent times the best team I ever saw successfully apply the "possession based" process he is trying to imitate was barca circa 2008 to 2010! They controlled possession with neat triangular passes and squared or through balls, and once they lost the ball the whole team flowed as an attacking or defensive wall and hassled and harried the opponent till you lost it back to them! Everyone one in that team was an outlet for an attack, goal keeper, defenders, midfielders and strikers! This van gaals "process" stifles creativity and off the cuff/ unpredictable football and in doing so gives opponents the whole picture of what the teams play offers! Change is needed!

aguero & costa have both scored league goals this season.
rooney hasn't scored a league goal yet and he has 1 away league goal in 18 months. rooney's lethargy didn't start this season.....at least for the strikers you have named, they were in super form last season. are you really suggesting a player can be out of form for 9 months?

it doesn't happen overnight. The team even as it is can win the EPL if a forward like Aguero lead the line.
We create enough chances but we don't finish them off (we beat ourselves against Swansea & we were just unlucky against Newcastle), whilst not giving away much chances to the opponent.
I think there's an improvement from the game against Spurs & Liverpool, that's what the fans want to see.

So finishing the moves off is the problem abi? Something he should have rectified all summer long by getting a few hitmen that would do just that? who stopped gaal from signing zlatan? Or cavani? Would it not have been better to have them as backup or starters? Instead I'm seeing "wilson and fellaini" forming strike force and martial waiting for opportunities! Even tonight he has said he does not want to start martial even though that's exactly what we need to worry psv! what part of the process is that?
