I have successfully set-up plantain farms across Nigeria this year and i will be sharing my experiences on this platform with you.

I will also be telling some of the successful.stories of plantain farmers that started small and now are making millions from plantain;all with pictures.

Although plantain farming business is expensive, the long term benefits to be gained is worth the huge capital invested.
This thread is targeted to provide good information to plantain farmers that are getting it wrong in the farming of plantain; interested people that wants to take advantage of the profits plantain farm offers; youths that wants to learn the in and out of plantain farming business.

Plantain farm.can last for decades (if it was properly set-up and manage) and i will.be showing you how to do that.

I have visited a lot of plantain farm.this year and what i see tells me that a lot of farmers are getting it totally wrong in this business.

Radopholussimiles(Tylenchida:Pratylenchidae) Theburrowingnematodeorthebanana-rootnematode,Radopholussimilis,causes toppling or blackhead disease of plantain and banana. Nematodes are now recognised as important soil-borne pathogens causing decline in yield in bananas byasmuchas30–60%. SYMPTOMS On Plantain/Banana this nematode invades and feeds on the cortex of the roots causing lesions and cavities. The nematode seldom feeds on vascular tissues. Nematode damage to roots results in reddish, elongated flex, parallel to the root axis. The discoloured areas enlarge as the nematode and progeny feed. The older partsofthelesionsturnblackandshrinkwhiletheadvancingmarginsremainred. The root systems are reduced, severely damaged and unable to uptake water and nutrients thus, the plants lack vigour; are stunted, and because of poor anchorage, are prone to topping under bunch weight or to being blown over even by not so strongwind. Nematode infested plantain/banana does not respond well to fertilizer application, irrigation or other cultural practices. Where there is severe nematode infestation, ratoon crops are hardly produced as there is continued plant loss and significant reduction of suckering

Red rust thrips cause rust-colored blemishes to form on the fruit due to feeding of nymphsandadults. They feed on the soft skin of the immature fruit, usually on the hidden surfaces between the closely packed fingers, especially in areas where the fingers are touching. The top hands are usually the most seriously affected. The damage should not be confused with maturity bronzing, which occurs on the exposed outer curve of the fruit and is not confined to areas where the fingers are touching. In severe cases the fruit develops longitudinal cracks and damage may extend over most of the fruit surface. Although the damage does not reduce the eating quality of the fruit, it negatively affects the external appearance and market value.

Contact fungicides (also called protectants) are used against foliar diseases. They remain on the surface of plants and act by preventing spore germination. However, they are only effective on the leaves present at the moment of application and can be easily washed away by rain. Their main drawback is the need for repeated applications to protect the new leaves. In the case of BLSD, since most infections start on the underside of the leaf during the unfurling of the cigar leaf, the effectiveness of contact fungicides depends on the quality of the coverage during the unfurling and on the interval between applications. On the other hand, they do not induce the selection of resistant fungal strains.

Q8: I was told that tissue culture plants have a shorter production cycle. Why is this? A8: Tissue culture-derived planting material is in general more vigorous than conventional planting material. Also, because tissue culture plants are pest- and disease-free at the time of planting, they are less stressed and can grow faster than conventional planting material. Q9: What are the challenges associated with tissue culture banana plants? A9: The price of a tissue culture plantlet is usually double compared to a conventional sucker. Also, better management and care of the plants is required, especially at the early stages. Otherwise, growing tissue culture banana plants has no special challenges compared with ordinary banana plants.

Nematodes These are microscopic worms exhibiting a parasitic effect on a number of plants including bananas. Parasitic nematodes can be of three broad categories; the root or aerial parasites, the ectoparasites or endoparasites and either migratory throughout the life cycle or sedentary for at least part of female development. All the important species that feed on bananas are root parasites. Pratylenchus goodeyi (Cobb) Sher and Allen, Radopholus similes (Cobb) Thorne and Helicotylenchus milticinctus (Cobb) Golden, are migratory endoparasites. Call us for full details

Banana Pests and Diseases It is now two decades since banana production in East Africa started declining. This decline in banana performance has been attributed to damage by pests, diseases and poor soil fertility (Gold et al., 1994; INIBAP Report, 2003). In Uganda for example, the average yields have dropped from 8.5 tonnes per hectare per annum in 1970 to the current level of about 5.7 tonnes per hectare per annum.

False Decapitation
Select a good sucker from the species of plantain or bananas that you want from a plant that is doing well. Plant sucker, then in 5 to 6 months use a knife to bore a hole to destroy the inner part at the level of the stem (remember the leaves of a bananas/ plantain start right at the ground level). The upper part of the plant will automatically die enabling the stock in the ground to give many suckers. Just in two months your suckers will be ready. In this case if you have decided to have either the ‘ebanga’, ‘ngumba’ or ‘nyale’ species of plantains (species of plantains in the South West), you can make a small demonstration farm from where you will get your suckers for your propagator that is used in the PIF technique of multiplication. If you decide to plant all it is good to label so that you don’t confuse when selling the seedlings or planting your plantation. The false decapitation can give you up to 15 seedlings and you can always return to the demonstration propaga-ting farm for suckers....Consult us for more info

Temperature and soil moisture are the most important factors in banana production. Lack of water at anytime may cause a reduction in fruit number and size and ultimate crop yield. Banana cultivars with Musa balbisiana genes tend to be more drought tolerant than cultivars of Musa acuminata. Symptoms of drought stress include folding of the leaves, pale green to yellow leaf color development, and premature leaf death. Severe drought stress may cause choking and pseudostem collapse. Banana plants are not flood tolerant. In general, plants may survive 24 to 48 hours of flooding caused by moving water. Stagnant water kills plants quickly.visit www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

Musa parasidiasca belongs to the natural order, plantaginaceae which contains more than 200 species, twenty-five or thirty of which have been reported. The common plantain (Plantango major) has broad, irregular oval leaves, abruptly contracted at the base into a long broad, channelled footstalk. The fully grown blade is 1.3–2.4 meters long and about two- third as broad, usually smooth, with several parallel veins. Plantain grows more than any other plant in compacted soils, is abundant beside paths, roadside and other areas with frequent soil compaction.

The larva causes damage through feeding and tunneling in the corm. Continuous feeding and tunneling causes the corm to become a blackened mass of decaying tissue.Abovegroundsymptomsarethe yellowing of leaves, withering and eventual death of the plants. Infected plants are easily blown over by winds since the roots are weak.Thematurelarva, orgrub is about 1-1.5cm long, creamy-white in colour, fleshy, and are legless, with the body distinctly curved and swollen in the more. Serious weevil attacks may lead to massive toppling of bananas. Other detrimental effects of weevil infestations include: premature plant death, stunted growth, delayed fruit maturation, production of small bunches, reduced number of suckers, reduced sucker vigour and development of wage

Plantain is a staple crop grown throughout the tropics. In Africa, plantain and Banana are also an important source of carbohydrate in the diet of more than 70 million people. Plantain is also an important source of revenue for farmers who produce the crop in small-scale field plantations and Backyards. Backyard soil is very rich in organic matter and nutrients from household refuse which is dumped there. Such gar-dens are permanently in use for plantains which grow there luxuriantly, become very large and produce heavy bunches. They grow in groups or clusters as each bearing plant produces many suckers which are not pruned out. Human activity is limited to manuring, propping and harvesting.

The growing tip (or meristem) at the top of ·the corm continuously forms new leaves and later becomes the inflorescence. The corm produces many branches, called suckers, and the whole unit is often referred to as the “mat” or “stool”. After the plant crop has been harvested, the mother plant is cut down and the suckers are thinned. Although all suckers are followers or daughter plants, the cultivator selects one (the ratoon) to continue the next cycle of production. The second harvest from the plantain mat is called the first ratoon crop.Visit:www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng

The cultivation of plantain is underexploited due to inadequate provision of good quality propagation material. The negative influence of parasites also leads to the use of poor quality suckers, resulting in a growth cycle of over two years. The return on the effort put in by farmers is therefore unsatisfactory, leading to further discouragement among plantain growers. Fortunately, a number of intensive production techniques have been developed, including in vitro cultivation, typically used in research centres, and macropropagation using the plantlet from stem fragments (usually named the PIF technique) whereby the primary buds of entire suckers or fragments of corms are destroyed and axillary buds are exposed to high humidity to induce sprouts which are then harvested, hardened, and distributed. PIF has met with great success among small-scale farmers because it is relatively easy to produce large numbers of plantlets in a short time. One sucker can produce between 10 and 50 plantlets, depending on the variety of plantain and the experience of the farmer.

A multiplication plot, which is planted only for the production of suckers and not to produce bunches. Plant density (2 m x 2 m) is much higher than in production fields and suckers are obtained by either decapitation or false decapitation. Both methods consist of removing the growing point. In the first method, the pseudo-stem is removed to get to the growing point. Only a small hole or window is cut for the second method. The foliage can remain active for up to 3 months after the removal of the meristem by the second method. Learn Mor By Clifford on :www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng
