SIR ALEX FERGUSON REVEALS HIS BIGGEST MISTAKE AT MAN UTD

The Scot believes his decision to announce his retirement at the start of the 2001-02 season had a major impact on the mentality of his staff and players

Sir Alex Ferguson admits one of his biggest mistakes at Manchester United was revealing that he would retire in 2002 before the season had finished.

The Scot subsequently reversed his decision to call time on his reign at Old Trafford but eventually retired in 2013 having won 38 trophies with the club.

“It's important to listen to your staff. In 2005, that period we didn't win anything, just before that I had an attempted retirement, and I think that affected everyone,” Ferguson told ESPN.

“It was a mistake, and my wife and my three sons changed my attitude towards it and I started to think.

“The biggest mistake I made was announcing it at the start of the [2001-02] season, and I think a lot of them had put their tools away; they thought, 'Oh, the manager's leaving,' but when I changed my mind in the January, I started thinking about United again and how we could get back on top.

“After that is when [Wayne] Rooney and [Cristiano] Ronaldo came to the club and we had to regenerate everyone. The youth side of it, the scouts; we'd gone to sleep. Strangely enough, the period from there on has been glorious; it's been fantastic with the numbers of league titles we won.

“The moments you don't win anything register very strongly with Manchester United.”

Possibly the same reason we went low after he departed. It was hard to come to terms with reality.

We will need 'new Ronaldo' and 'new Rooney' to take us back to top. Martial might be one already. Can Memphis be the second?

and those idiotic cretinous chelsea vermins want to compare lampard to scholes. ryan giggs started playing for united in 90/91, he retired in 13/14......it would surprise you that frank lampard played more minutes in the premier league than giggs.

people often forget lampard had obscene number of minutes under his belt. add it to the 58 penalties he scored in the premier league and you would see his stats are not close to being remarkable. he's at least 10 tiers below scholes in terms of ability.

The only people that would rate Lampard over Scholes are the shekpe vermins. I didn't even bother with the argument. It's like saying Lampard is better than Xavi club-wise coz of his goals. Any day Lampard is compared with Scholes amongst neutral fans and ex-footballers worldwide, Scholesy Baba will wipe the floor with Lamp's name!! If midfield generals like Xavi, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Edgar Davids and co, could pick the Ginger Fella, who the fúck cares about Shekpe vermins' opinions? Imagine one of them saying coz Scholes is a football pundit and has column in a newspaper, he sought the limelight. Maybe he expected Scholes to get holed up in his room playing PS4 all the days of his remaining life before he'll agree Scholes never sought the limelight. Illiteracy is a disease!!

"Paul Scholes had the best football brain I'd ever seen in a kid. Let's face it. Paul Scholes is in a class of its own." - Brian Kidd

"He's always one of those people others talk about. Even playing at Real Madrid, the players always say to me 'what's he like'? They respect him as a footballer, and to have that respect from some of those players is great." - David Beckham

"Paul Scholes has been the best England midfield player for 30-odd years. You'd probably have to go back to Bobby Charlton to find someone who could do as much as Scholes. When the ball arrives at his feet he could tell you where every player on that pitch is at that moment. His awareness is superb." - Gordon Strachan

"I'm saddened because I think we as spectators, not only in this country but right through out Europe and the rest of the
World, will be missing one hell of a footballer." - Ray Wilkins

"What United have got that Chelsea haven't is Paul Scholes. I think he is different to anything else in English football." - Kevin Keegan

"There is not a better midfield player in the world." - Sam Allardyce

"Scholes is undoubtedly the best midfielder of hi generation." - Zinedine Zidane

"I can't understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it's because he doesn't seek the limelight like some of the other 'stars'." - Thierry Henry

"The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy -Scholes." - Patrick Vieira

"He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League."
- Cesc Fabregas

"I really rate Paul Scholes, because he hasn't got the high profile of many of the Manchester United players, he doesn't get too much attention, but he is one very good player. He is an intelligent player, he works hard and he scores some great goals. He is not flamboyant and is a quiet lad off the pitch but he is a tremendous asset to Manchester United and to England. He has already got my vote as player of the year." - Tony Adams

"Every one of us (midfielders) is just trying to become as good as him. Everyone can learn from Paul Scholes." - Edgar Davids

"I'm more an admirer of Paul Scholes than I am of Ronaldo. Ronaldo is a fantastic player, but he has 10 other great players around him every week. Scholes is one of the most complete footballers I've ever seen. His one-touch play is phenomenal. Whenever I have played against him, I never felt I could get close to him." - Eidur Gudjohnsen

"If you ask footballers to pick out the player they most admire, so many of them will pick Paul Scholes. He can tackle, and his passing and shooting is of the highest level. He’s the most consistent and naturally gifted player we’ve had for a long, long time." - Alan Shearer

"He’s the best one or two-touch passer in the country. He sees the game unlike any other player." - Terry Venables

"There isn’t a player of his mould anywhere else in the world." - Glenn Hoddle

"He's always in the right position, always seems to be at the end of the box when the ball drops in. The complete midfielder - when he's fit, he's the best. Some go missing but he's in the right place at the right time. He's my favourite player of all-time, unbelievable. If you give him a chance it's a goal, isn't it?" - Micah Richards

"Some of Paul Scholes' tackles come in so late they arrive yesterday." - Clive Tyldesley

"He knows how to do everything, and he is the one who directs the way his team plays. On top of that, he has indestructible mental strength, and he is a genuine competitor." - Thierry Henry

"An all-round midfielder who possesses quality and character in abundance." - Marcello Lippi

"I tell anyone who asks me - Scholes is the best English player." - Laurent Blanc

"Paul Scholes would have been one of my first choices for putting together a great team - that goes to show how highly I have always rated him. He would have been one of the first players I’d have bought, given the chance." - Marcello Lippi

"Out of everyone at Manchester United, I would pick out Scholes - he is the best midfielder of his generation, I would
have loved to have played alongside him." - Pep Guardiola

"Scholes? Fantastic! Why isn’t he playing for England? It is crazy. Only in England. Scholes is a great, great player. So experienced and still, for me, one of the best in the world in
midfield. Manchester United are lucky to have him." - Jose Mourinho

“In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.” -Xavi

"When he passes the ball it stays passed. The ball goes exactly where he wants it to. I have always loved him for that. I played against him once or twice and he is an absolute genius. He is a role model for anyone who wants to play football. He is a joy to watch. In fact, I wish he was 21, then I could see his career all over again." - Ian Holloway

"I want to pass like him. Who taught him how to do that?" - Ronaldinho

"At La Masia, his name was mentioned a lot. He’s a teacher." - Messi

"Nobody on this planet had a range of passing like Paul Scholes. Training every day was a pleasure just watching him. Unbelievable career" - Michael Owen

"If he was playing with me, I would have scored so many more." - Pele

"My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder." - Zinedine Zidane

"I’m star-struck when I see Paul Scholes because you never see him. On the pitch you can’t catch him. Off the pitch he disappears." - Luis Figo

"I’m not the best, Paul Scholes is." - Edgar Davids

Jose Mourinho has been given a suspended one-match stadium ban and fined £50,000 by the F.A.

The charge comes after the Chelshite manager admitted a breach of FA rules in relation to post-match media comments.

MOAN-rinho was charged for misconduct following the Southampton game at Stamford Bridge on October 3rd....Sky sports.

Its always nice to see that the plonkers senseless rants are always punished by the authorities similar to the way we tend to punish the putrid musings of his fellow shekpite loving zombies on this thread!

Scholes played in a stadium with over 70K fans, with many cameras on him. How much more few cameras on him in football studio? I'm an introvert doesn't mean I can't stand in front of a camera. I've stood in front of cameras to make speeches, it doesn't stop me from being an introvert or extremely secluded type while growing up. Anyway, I'm not here to argue this over-flogged issue. I've only ever argued who the better player was once in this thread and that didn't even happen this year.

Of course I think Lampard is by far the better player. Let's not forget that in his last season for Chelsea, he played in the pivot and still finished as our highest goal scorer(That's for The claims that Lampard should be expected to score because he played in an advanced position)

HOWEVER, my discussion with Coogar was based on his dubious claims that he could prove that Scholes was the better using stats.

Hence our debate was not about who the better player was, but rather the METHOD used to come to this conclusion- an argument that only Coogar and I seemed to understand.

The 'limelight' statement is interesting because of the tense used to describe the situation. Coogar described Scholes as someone who continues to shun public attention...a description which is clearly at odds with Mr Scholes chosen career.

If we however choose to limit the period covered by the 'limelight' statement to just Scholes playing career, it is absolutely correct...

But it then begs another question, what limelight was Lampard courting when he was voted the second best player in the world?

Answer on a postcard please....

So lampards plan was to be voted 2nd? How is that an achievement? Dude I saw the stats thingy between you and cougar and if you remember I told you I was not going to get into all that further math you guys were on about because "stats don't make the player rather the player makes the stats"! When I rate players I rate them based on their abilities, standing in the game, achievements, respect from peers and things that actually HAVE TO DO WITH THE GAME OF FOOTBALL! And not by how many miles he ran in a league match or how many assists he gave in a standout season? Or let me put it this way if you compared Zidane and lamps, I'm sure lampard scored more goals, penalties and played more matches than zidane? But who is the better player between them? I can see your fingers heading towards your "z key" for your answer!

Lamps is better than Scholes to only Shekpe fans. EOD.

I also see that you refused to answer my 1st question Sinizia...

Coogar

You paid peanuts for Depay because he is not a galactico like Ozil and we dont need to make money on shirts to realise we have had a ROI on him, dumbfu..ck!
You are talking about satisfaction? Only you and maybe a handful of shameless others, right? Majority of United fans who bought shirts did so before Depay's terrible run kicked off.... I maintain that and you cant tell anyone here majority are satisfied with Depay's current run of form, it is inexplicably stu..pid to try to tell us that!
I have no time to read the rest of the crap you typed above right now....... I will be back from you, let me get this paperchase move outta the way! grin grin grin

So lampards plan was to be voted 2nd? How is that an achievement?

How is that NOT an achievement? Have you ever been adjudged the second best in the world at your chosen profession? Anyway, you guys need to pay attention to a discussion or dont quote me at all. Coogar quoted Xavi et al to prop up his argument. I used his Balon D'or award to counter that. Simple

This is completely irrelevant to the discourse. If you cant stay on track, then don't bother quoting me. As previously mentioned. neither of the belligerents involved in the discussion were arguing who the better player was. In fact, if you go through my post history during the debate, not once do I claim that Lampard is the better player....

Lampard scored more goals and copped more assists than Xavi. But You wont see a Barca fan trying to use stats to prove that Xavi was the better midfielder. And that was the point of the entire discussion.

I would have been very surprised if you could actually back your own assertion with a logical comeback.

HOWEVER, my discussion with coogar was based on his dubious claims that he could prove that Scholes was the better using stats.

you are a disgrace to everything that sucks oxygen for even attempting to lie that statistics haven't proven scholes is the better player.

on open play goals scored.....scholes was the better player. lampard scored a whooping 42 penalty kicks in the premier league. scholes scored only one for united. ratio 42:1 tells me lampard's stats are padded up with awoof penalties.

if we include city's games, lampard scored 176 goals in 48,868 mins in the premier league. however, 42 of them goals were from the spot. so lampard scored 134 goals(excluding penalties)

134 goals in 48,868 mins(lampard)

scholes scored 107PL goals of which only one was a penalty.

106 goals in 36,086 mins(scholes)

it took lampard 364 mins to score a goal.
it took scholes 340 mins to score a goal.

Aah! You have made me very happy with the bolded! Glad we've got that sorted! And erm speaking of staying on track I don't play football so comparing my profession to a footballing achievement makes no sense since in some professions 2nd is actually an achievement, BUT NOT AS REGARDS SOCCER AWARDS OR DURING LEAGUE TITLE CHASES! And lastly you should take your girly moan about not being quoted whenever you go back HOME to your shekpite thread, this is RED ARMY TERRITORY bruv, and I QUOTE whoever the _fuck I like when I like, especially if its a quote from a gayner or a shekpite! That's why its a forum! You would do it too if your teams brand were half as prestigious as MINE so get familiar! Shalom!

because xavi has not scored 42 penalty kicks in la liga. what kinda player scores that many penalty kicks to pad up his stats? a mediocre one!!!

Nani 77 assists in 147 appearances = 0.52 assists per appearance
Ryan Giggs 283 asssists in 632 appearances = 0.45 assists per appearance
Ashley Young 109 assists in 244 appearances = 0.45 assists per appearnces

Nani>>>>>Giggs

Young=Giggs

This is what happens when dumbos like coogar are allowed anywhere near statistics.

Do the calculations per minute and don't be surprised when your calculator tells you Ashley Young is better than Giggs before turning itself off in protest.

You clearly dont work for a living otherwise you would understand that being voted as the 2nd best in the world regardless of the profession is a very big deal.

The rest of this is just BS. Some of you think that following a club means that you have be obnoxious twats all the time. Get familiar with what? I've attended several games at OT and my team weren't even playing. Go to the curry mile on derby day and see both sets of fans mingling like it's nothing.

You need to grow up. I understand you're trying to make a name as a nairaland brawler though....good luck with that

please, stop being idiötic.....

number of appearances do not reflect the number of minutes spent on the pitch. we have consistently schooled you on this fact and yet you keep on trying to be clever by half.

giggs(632 PL apps, 46,309 mins)
lampard(611 PL apps, 48,868 mins)

a plonker like you would generally assume because giggs had more apps, then he musta played more minutes but then stats show lampard has 2,500+ mins(close to 30 full matches on the pitch) more than giggs.

you have just proven my assertion that chelsea fans are the most idiotic set of fans on the solar system!

congratulations!!!!
