Yusuf leaps to Chikatara's defence
By: Sammy Wejinya

Assistant coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Salisu Yusuf says “ill luck” was responsible for the failure of striker, Chisom Chikatara to put away any of the chances that came his way in Saturday’s 2016 Africa Nations Championship qualifier against Burkina Faso.
The Abia Warriors attacker was guilty of missing no less than three excellent opportunities against the Stallions in the second half at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
Salisu does not question the quality of the forward and believes he did not enjoy the rub of the green.
“I think it was down to ill luck that made him miss those chances.
“Our decision to bring in Chikatara and (Gbolahan) Salami late in the game was tactical because we wanted to attack with strength in the second half and we achieved that.
“If we had had a little more luck, we could have scored four goals at least,” he said.
The trainer then took the time to review the game which Nigeria won 2-0 courtesy of goals in each half by Bature Yaro and Salami.
“It was a tough game but we could have won 4-0. The boys did very well.
“The Burkinabes are good and could have scored here. Generally our boys have done very well but made some mistakes.
“There is never a perfect game in football so we will go back to the drawing board and try to rectify some of the mistakes we have made in the first leg,” he said.

Martins and Ogbeche recapturing the glow of youth

On the wrong side of thirty and outside of Europe's top five leagues, both marksmen are turning back the hands of time with splendid goalscoring featsCOMMENTBySolace Chukwu Follow on Twitter
What’s in a number?
Well, that depends. The significance of numerology varies from one individual to the next: we’ve all at some point in our lives been asked to pick a number between 1 and 10. The reason for whichever number leaps first out of the murky pond that is the human subconscious is a pursuit for far more specialized minds.
Pop culture has given us negative mental associations with the number 13, for example. However, for the professional footballer, the digits that hold a similar connotation of impending doom are 3 and 0. Thirty is the onset of dusk, the waning of the hearth, the cue for a curtain call.
However, there exist exceptions to this natural transition; mostly goalkeepers, for whom wisdom dictates that familiarity breeds the sort of contemptuous ease with which it is necessary to achieve consistency. Dino Zoff hoisted the World Cup at the age of 40: the beginning of life, as the saying aptly goes; by turning away from one spinning sphere and embracing another—a footballer never truly lives in the material world while active.
For outfielders, the exceptions are far fewer and the rationalizations more arcane. We have all secretly thought that once the fabled AC Milan defenders of yore: Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta pass on, we might glean some deep biological insight to the limits of the human body by studying them.
It would also be worthwhile to investigate just what makes Obafemi Martinsand Bartholomew Ogbechetick. While the former has found Major League Soccer conducive to the reawakening of his goalscoring touch, the latter has apparently discovered the elixir of youth in humble Leeuwarden.
https://static.goal.com/di/8C8043D05E0F0EA784E9B86348B75A04.jpg
Ogbeche |Has found his best form during his later years...
Indeed, at the ripe age of 30, Ogbeche is having the best scoring run of his professional career. Having promised so much in the early 2000s, his failure to deliver was not rewarded with patience at giants Paris Saint-Germain. A convoluted journey by way of Spain, France and England, has brought him to Cambuur, in their third season in the Dutch top-flight. His 50 appearances have yielded 22 goals since he moved to the club in January 2014, with the last of these coming in the 1-1 draw with AZ Alkmaar on Saturday.
With players who burn brightly in their youth, there is always the inclination to fizzle out too quickly; almost as though ability is alarmingly finite, to be rationed piecemeal and with great care.
https://static.goal.com/di/DDEC346F7E9B6AAFE906AE9BFC53E9B3.jpg
What makes Ogbeche’s case more remarkable though is that, having appeared to wane, he has been rekindled as though by a sudden gust of oxygen, sparkling beautifully in one last salvo.
The same can be said for Martins. Highly rated at a tender age, his big-money move to Newcastle in 2006 came as a consequence of his highly effective cameo displays with Italian giants Inter Milan. His three years on Tyneside yielded 35 goals in all competitions, hardly a disappointing return. However,he had the misfortune of inordinate expectation, having been draped in the vestments of retired club legend Alan Shearer. That, coupled with the €15 million fee paid for him, and the club’s relegation in 2009, meant he had to move on.
https://static.goal.com/di/21D8200AA28BB4C8E8D14A5C65546D65.jpg
Martins |Too much, too young...
He has now found his feet again, as well as the spring in his step (and somersaults) playing in the green of the Seattle Sounders, and the news of his goal return–14 for the season now, in 18 appearances–has been noised back home.
This abrupt eruption of form on the opposite sides of the Atlantic is all the more remarkable because longevity is not a trait often associated with Nigerian forwards.

Martins and Ogbeche recapturing the glow of youth

https://static.goal.com/di/93B7B541DF0267F162868BA09AD817A0.jpg
Already, there have been calls for both players to be reintegrated into the national team; for Ogbeche in particular, this would be remarkable, having last pulled on the (lemon) green and white (that atrocious kit from the World Cup in Korea/Japan has achieved infamy) in 2002. Thirteen years between call-ups is surely unprecedented.
However, there is reason to be cautious, and to assess whether or not both players fit the long-term direction of new coach Sunday Oliseh. So far, he has elected to ignore them but, as shown in deciding to omit Watford’s top-scorer Odion Ighalo last month, his considerations may be more arbitrary.
In any case, it will certainly be interesting to see just how much further these two can buck the trend, or whether this is simply a hot flush, a fleeting paroxysm of virility before the final fade to black.

Goal explores the 19 confirmed ties for the second round of African matches following an intense week of qualifiers
The international break has come to an end, and we now know all of the ties for the second round of Caf’s World Cup qualifiers.
The 40 teams that remain in contention will all be aware that a place at the global showcase in Russia is still some distance away, but for those who have advanced past the first round of qualifiers, the hope will still be burning brightly that they can run the gauntlet and steal a spot among the world’s finest in three summers’ time.
However, in the second round, the continent’s heavyweights are introduced, and the minnows that have sneaked through to this point will be under no illusion that tougher tests await them.
Nigeria, ranked 52nd, will face 135th-ranked Swaziland who defeated Djibouti 8-1 over two legs.
https://static.goal.com/di/0F56AB9E3FA9650BDEEAB98D55267B9B.jpg
Despite their troubles, Nigeria will be overwhelming favourites to beat Swaziland
The Comoros will be the lowest-ranked nation still standing in round two. Only four African nations—Somalia, Eritrea, Sao Tome e Principe—sit lower than the islanders in the Fifa World Ranking, withLes Coelecantesclassed 193rd in the world at the time of writing.
However, after seeing off Lesotho on away goals, Amir Abdou’s side can look forward to a glamour tie against Ghana.
We don’t expect Avram Grant and the Black Stars will have too many sleepless nights over that one!
https://static.goal.com/di/9582644C5E8D11F182F7024D846D880B.jpg
Ghana will likely be facing the lowest-ranked team left in the qualification process
Based on the world rankings, Tanzania have the toughest task of all of Africa’s nations.
The Taifa Stars impressed in the first round, and saw off Malawi, but their reward is a double header against Algeria.Les Fennecsmay have struggled at the 2015 Cup of Nations, but they remain Africa’s top-ranked side (19th in the world) and are overwhelming favourites to advance to the group stage.
Kenya and South Africa both also have testing challenges ahead.
https://static.goal.com/di/09B2255980BA09448F7D7C84E18C0182.jpg
Can Kenya overcome familiar failings to see off Cape Verde?
The Harambee Stars comfortably defeated Mauritius in the first round—mainly thanks to a first leg 5-2 triumph away—but some familiar failings were present in the return in Nairobi, and the East Africans will be outsiders to see off Cape Verde.
South Africa knew their fate before the first round, and are set to meet Angola in round two, with the first match on November 13 and the return leg four days later.
Will Shakes Mashaba and Bafana Bafana still be smiling after the second round?
Elsewhere, the battle between the 2015 Cup of Nations hosts Equatorial Guinea and the would-be 2015 Cup of Nations hosts Morocco will be fascinating to watch, while reigning champions Cote d’Ivoire should back themselves to see off fellow West Africans Liberia.

Ikeme Benched; Onazi, Oboabona, Ekong, Oshaniwa In Action

https://www.completesportsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/AMA310366.jpg
By James Agberebi:
Super Eagles keeper, Carl Ikeme, was an unused substitute for Wolverhampton Wanderers in their 4-2 away loss to Derby County on Sunday.
Ikeme, who was in goal for the Super Eagles during the international break, has appeared three times for Wolves this season.
In Serie A, Ogenyi Onazi made his second appearance for Lazio but couldn’t prevent them from losing 2-1 away to Sassuolo. Onazi was to later come off for Balde Diao Keita in the 46th minute of the encounter.
Godfrey Oboabona made a 90 minute appearance for Rizespor in their Turkish league encounter against Besiktas. But a 63rd minute Ricardo Quaresma condemned Rizespor to a 1-0 defeat.
Also in Turkey, Raheem Lawal was in the starting 11 for Eskisehirspor in their 1-0 away loss to Akhisar Belediye. Lawal was substituted for Alpaslan Ozturk in the 61st minute.
Former Ashdod defender, Juwon Oshaniwa, started in Hearts’ 1-0 away win against Dundee United in a Scottish league clash. Oshaniwa later made way for Liam Smith in the 71st minute.
Gent’s on-loan defender, William Troost-Ekong, featured for 90 minutes in Haugesund’s 2-0 loss to Lillestrom in Norway. It was Ekong’s 11th league appearance for Haugesund this term.
Former Flying Eagles star, Michael Olaitan, was in action for FC Twente as they beat NEC Nijmegen 1-0 in the Dutch Erdivisie. Olaitan was later substituted for Thomas Agyepong in the 65th minute.
Still in the Dutch league, Nigerian striker, Abiola Dauda, replaced Chelsea’s on-loan player Dominic Solanke, as Vitesse thrashed home side PEC Zwolle 5-1. Solanke scored one of the goals for Vitesse.
In the Belgian league, Nigerian forward, Joseph Akpala, was introduced in the 47th minute for Knowledge Musona but was unable to rescue at least a point for Oostende who lost 1-0 to Club Brugge. His Nigerian team-mate, Saviour Godwin, was an unused substitute.
One-cap Super Eagles forward, Imoh Ezekiel, made a 90 minute appearance for Anderlecht in their 4-0 thumping of Zulte-Waregem. Ezekiel was however booked as early as the 13th minute.
In Sweden, vormer Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder, Dickson Etuhu, was in action for 90 minutes for AIK as they defeated Halmstad 1-0. But it wasn’t a day to remember for former Flying Eagles star, John Owoeri, whose side Aatvidaberg were thrashed 6-0 by Falkenbergs.

https://www.completesportsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/IMG_20151019_005925.jpg
By James Agberebi:
Nigerian striker, Obafemi Martins, was on target for Seattle Sounders as they forced Houston Dynamo to a 1-1 draw in their Major League Soccer clash late on Sunday night.
The result eliminated Dynamo from the play-offs, while it left the Sounders still in the hunt for a spot.
The game which was played at the BBVA Compass Stadium, saw Dynamo take the lead in the 65th minute through Ricardo Clark.
But with eight minutes remaining, Martins, who has been in good scoring form, struck to earn Seattle Sounders a share of the spoils.
Martins has now scored 15 league goals in 21 games for Seattle Sounders in the current campaign.
He has also found the back of the net six times in his last eight games.
Meanwhile, former Enyimba midfielder, Rasheed Olabiyi, was an unused substitute for Houston Dynamo in the encounter. He has so far featured seven times this season.

Super Eagles and Celtic defender, Efe Ambrose, says he is committed to the Scottish champions despite struggling to pin down a regualr spot at the club this season amid a barrage of criticism, Comple tesportsnigeria.com can report.
Ambrose, who scored for Nigeria against Cameroon in last Sunday’s international friendly encounter in Brussels, Belgium, has played second fiddle to Dedyrick Boyata this season.
The former Kaduna United player has also come in for plenty of criticism after a series of errors for the Bhoys. His most recent one came against Fenerbache in the Europa League.
He has however said he is not contemplating leaving Parkhead and says manager Ronny Deila’s faith in him is the biggest factor behind his commitment.
“I never think about that because I always have believe in myself,” he told Scotsman.com.
“The best way to fight criticism is to deal with it and stay strong.
“You don’t run away from it, you face it and I have a manager who really believes in my ability.”

Moses out of Chelsea tie

Nigeria international, Victor Moses is technically out of Saturday’s London derby between West Ham and Chelsea because of certain clauses in his loan contract with the Hammers.
Moses is still a member of Chelsea Football Club, having signed a new four-year deal, prelude to his move to West Ham. Under the loan agreement, the loanee is forbidden from playing against his parent club, in this instance for Moses, Chelsea.
Moses was happy to return to Selhurst Park, and assist West Ham win for the fifth time in the Premier League this season. The Nigerian international will however return to play for west ham in its game against Watford at the end of the month.
Moses was in action for 74 minutes before making way for Mauro Zarate, and was involved in the Hammers opening goal netted by Carl Jenkinson.
“Great to be back at Selhurst Park yesterday and great win lads were brilliant! Thanks for the support, ” Victor Moses said via social media on Sunday morning.
Moses cut his footballing teeth with Crystal Palace , spending nine years with the Eagles before transferring to Wigan Athletic inJanuary 2010 after scoring 11 league goals for the Londoners.

CHAN: Home-Based Eagles Can Make Nigeria Proud — Maigari

https://leadership.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/maigari_6-300x225.gif
Former Chairman of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari said on Sunday that the home-based Super Eagles team had potentials to do well in the African Nations Championship qualifiers.
Maigari told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the Eagles 2-0 win over Stallions of Burkina Faso was a good result and should be sustained.
He said the home-based Eagles gave a good account of themselves in the match and the goal margin could have been more if they converted all the chances they had.
“ It was a very good match and good result,, even though we lost several scoring chances.
“ But, I am not worried because this is a starting point in the qualifiers and I believe the team will do better in future matches,“ he said.
Maigari urged the team to be committed, determined and put more life in the game to win the second leg match against the Burkinabes.
“ I am hopeful that the team will do well in the second leg match. They have potential to create chances and score goals.“ he said.
Maigari also urged Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh to use home-based players in the new national team.
He said Nigeria was blessed with good talents playing in the local league who could be part of the Super Eagles. (NAN)

Nigeria axe Emenike for World Cup qualifiers

https://africanfootball.com/bp_images/2015/10/Samm_1_September_5.jpg
Emenike - Looks set to be dropped by Oliseh for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Swaziland
There are very strong indications that Sunday Oliseh Oliseh will axe Emmanuel Emenike from next month’s World Cup qualifier against Swaziland after the striker failed to deliver in four matches under the new Eagles coach.
Oliseh is a big admirer of Emenike after he top scored at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa, but he has now gone more than two years without a goal for the three-time African champions.
His last goal was in Ethiopia in October 2013 in a final 2014 World Cup play-off.
A top source close to the team revealed: “Oliseh is disappointed Emenike has not justified the confidence he has in him.
“He has been given his chance by the coach, who is now seriously considering Odion Ighalo to lead his attack against Swaziland next month.”
Watford striker Ighalo responded to his snub by the Eagles coach for his first set of call-ups by scoring in a 3-0 win over Cameroon in Brussels.
It was his second goal for the Eagles after he fired his first against Chad in Kaduna in June.
Nigeria and Swaziland will battle for a place in the third round of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The two legs are slated for between November 9 and 17 with the overall winners to a third round to be played on a mini-league basis.

Cameroon stutter at home against Congo

The highly anticipated 2016 CAF African Championships (CHAN) first leg clash between Cameroon and Congo ended in a 0-0 draw in Cameroon on Sunday afternoon.
Although it was expected that the Indomitable Lions would take their home advantage and manage to get a positive result against Congo, the match failed to produce the spark it promised to.
At half time, both sides were held to a dull 0-0 draw and the second stanza was seen as a chance for both sides to turn the tables around.
However, the Red Devils also failed to grab a lead away from home as they were seeking to score away hoping to finish the clash at home next week.
Despite making strides to get goals, the second half could also not produce a winner with both nations settling for a dull goalless draw.
The 'Diables Rouges' are scheduled to host Volke Finke and his men next week hoping to take advantage of their home ground and get a win and book their spot in next year’s tournament in Rwanda.
The return leg is next weekend.

Ghana sealed a 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in Kumasi on Sunday, in the first leg of their 2016 African Nations Championship’s Zone West B qualifying tie.
Joel Femeyeh scored a double to give the local Black Stars a comfortable cushion ahead of their return clash in Abidjan.
The striker, who plays for Division One League side Asokwa Deportivo, leveled for the local Black Stars just on the nick of half-time, feeding on Patrick Asmah’s assist to cancel out Ibrahim Sangare’s opener on 33 minutes.
After the break, Ghana looked lively after head coach Maxwell Konadu introduced Nuhu Fuseini upfront.
Another substitute Kwesi Donsu came off the bench and struck the woodwork.
With a minute left to the end of regulation time, Femeyeh weaved his magic again and planted a firm one past the Ivory Coast goalkeeper.
Ghana will have to defend the slim advantage going into the return leg in Abidjan in a fortnight.
The winner over the two legs will pick the sole qualification slot from Zone West B to the finals of the African Nations Championships in Rwanda next year.

Zimbabwe took advantage over the struggling Likoena of Lesotho beating them 3-1 in their 2016 CAF African Championships qualifier clash on Sunday afternoon at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo.
A brace by Roderick Mutuma and one goal from Danisa Phiri were enough to hand the hosts the deserved victory in front of the home crowd.
Calisto Pasuwa’s men netted first when Mutuma converted from the penalty spot handing the Warriors an early lead in the 48th minute just after their return from the tunnel.
In the 56th minute, the Dynamos player doubled their lead, thus ensuring they are in control of the proceedings, killing the hopes of Seephephe Matete’s side getting a win.
Nevertheless, in an aim to bounce back in the game, Tsepo Seturumane pulled one back in the 63rd minute, but it wasn’t enough to keep them in the game.
With nine minutes to go to the end of the qualifier, Phiri finished Likoena’s hopes of making a comeback in the match when he scored.
Following the loss, Lesotho will have to go back to the drawing board and rectify their errors to ensure they bag a win when they host Zimbabwe next week at home.

Tunisia will be desperate for a victory over Libya when they host them on Monday night.
The African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualification first round first-leg encounter will take place at the Stade Olympique de Radès.
As things stand at the moment, the Eagles of Carthage are rooted at the bottom of the Northern Zone qualification Group with one only point.
Morocco are leading the three-team group having collected four points, while Libya are on three points. All three teams have played two games each.
Tunisia need to collect maximum points against Libya in order to stand a good chance of cementing their spot in the top two positions, and qualify for the 2016 Chan tournament in Rwanda.
The Eagles of Carthage will look to the likes of Fakhreddine Ben Youssef, Mohamed Ali Moncer, and Karim Aouadhi, who scored in their 1-1 draw with Morocco in a group game four months ago.
Meanwhile, Libya need to maintain their position in the top two positions in the group so that they can qualify for the 2016 Chan tournament.
The Mediterranean Knights have already edged out Tunisia 1-0 thanks to Al Khritli's second-half strike in their first group encounter.
However, they were hammered 3-0 by Morocco in their next group match away at the Stade Mohamed V, Casablanca.
Libya are the defending Chan champions have won the last tournament in 2014 which was hosted by South Africa.
Algerian referee Redouane Necib will be in charge of the encounter between Tunisia and Libya.

Uganda's Frank Kalanda celebrates after scoring against Sudan
Uganda sealed a 2-0 win over Sudan in Kampala on Saturday, in the first leg of their 2016 African Nations Championship’s Central-East zone qualifying clash.
Down to ten men for more than thirty minutes, the locals however managed to claim all three points and keep a cleansheet.
Uganda started the better of the two sides at Nakivubo Stadium, with URA FC striker Frank ‘Machete’ Kalanda giving the local Cranes the lead after 15 minutes of play.
Vipers SC playmaker Farouk Miya came close to doubling their advantage after misfiring from close range just before the half-an-hour mark, before ultimately finding the back of the net in the 36th minute to send Uganda with a two-goal cushion into the break.
Sudan had the opportunity to pull a goal back after Mudather El Tahir was fouled inside the box by Hassan Waswa Dazo shortly after the restart, but Cranes’ keeper James Alitho saved Mudather’s penalty attempt.
However, Hassan Waswa Dazo’s rough challenge on the Al Hilal star striker left Uganda down to ten men with more than 30 minutes to go.
But while Express FC striker Samson Ceaser Okhuti failed to add misery to the visitors in the 69th minute, the Cranes managed to hold onto their two goal advantage until the final whistle.
Sudan will try to turn things around in front of their home crowd in Khartoum in the return leg, with the aggregate winners to book their place at the final tournament, which will take place in Rwanda from 16 January to 7 February 2016.

Zambia enjoyed a 3-0 thrashing of Mozambique in Ndola on Saturday, in the first leg of their 2016 African Nations Championship’s Southern zone qualifying tie.
The local Chipolopolo scored all three goals in the last 15 minutes of the match.
In a tight first half with few chances, Zambia could have broken the deadlock just before the break, but Mozambique keeper José Guirrugo denied both Charles Zulu and Paul Katema’s shots to keep his side in the game at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
However, Zesco United forward Winston Kalengo ultimately gave the Zambians the lead with 13 minutes to go.
Lusaka Dynamo’s Conlyde Luchanga doubled Zambia lead three minutes later, with midfielder Spencer Sautu hammering the final nail into the Mambas’ coffin on the stroke of full time to leave Mozambique facing an uphill task when they host their opponents in Maputo in the return leg.
The aggregate winners will book their place at the final tournament, featuring exclusively players from their respective national leagues, which will take place in Rwanda from 16 January to 7 February 2016.

South Africa have it all to do in the second leg of their 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Angola, following a 2-0 defeat to 'Palancas Negras' at Rand Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Mateus Galiano da Costa, veteran of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, opened the scoring 10 minutes after the interval before Manuel Afonso put the icing on the cake in second-half stoppage-time.
Bafana Bafana struggled to break down the Angolan defensive line in the opening exchanges, with the visitors registering the first shot in anger after 12 minutes - Osvaldo Diniz's shot comfortable kept out by Wayne Sandilands.
The hosts first shot at goal fell to an unlikely source, with SuperSport United midfielder Micheal Morton forcing Hipolito Damiao into a good save in the 33rd minute.
Angola, though, continued to enjoy the better of the chances, with Jacinto Dala seeing his header from Isaac Da Costa's corner-kick fly inches over the crossbar before Dario Cardoso's swerving effort was well saved by Sandilands on the cusp of half-time.
Thabo Senong introduced Percy Tau following the break and the Mamelodi Sundowns man almost had an immediate impact, with Nelson Fonseca forced into a superb last ditch tackle to deny the tricky midfielder in the 54th minute.
Angola opened the scoring a minute later through Matues da Costa, whose shot from range deflected off Thabo September and into the back of the net past a flailing Sandilands.
Bafana were almost gifted the equaliser five minutes after the hour, but Morton failed to capitilise with the goal at his mercy after Lyle Lakay saw his shot parried into the path of the former Maritzburg United captain.
Amigo Memela was unlucky to see his header from a Siyanda Zwane cross canon off the upright seven minutes from time, before Afonso wrapped things up for the visitors with a cool finish two minutes into added time.
The second-leg will take place in Luanda next weekend.
