omonnakoda: Oh. Was that before or after the nsibidi writing system and John Crows dictionary and a plethora of other indigenous writing systems and dictionaries? https://archive.org/details/memoirsoflatecap00crow "pre-1500s == A form of writing called nsibidi, using formalized pictograms, existed among the Igbo and neighboring groups. It died out, probably because it was popular among secret societies whose members did not want to discuss it publicly. In 1904, T. D. Maxwell, Acting District Commissioner in Calabar, was the first European to learn about the existence of nsibidi. Apart from nsibidi writing, the Igbo acculturated themselves effectively by informal methods (Oraka pp. 13,17). " "1841 == Another Norris expedition on the Niger. He took two missionary linguists from the staff of the CMS (Church Missionary Society) in Freetown, J. F. Schon and Samuel Ajayi Crowther (the latter a Yoruba-born ex-slave and teacher), along with twelve interpreters, including Igbo who came from emancipated slave families settled in Freetown. John Christopher Taylor and Simon Jonas were among these. No permanent mission was founded. Schon was interested in Igbo and Hausa. At a stopover in Aboh, he tried to communicate in Igbo but was disappointed that people did not understand him. He then abandoned Igbo study for some twenty years (Oraka p. 23)." http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/pritchett/00fwp/igbo/igbohistory.html Your tried though. What does a railway have to do with the discussion about the first partly modernised industry? 3 Likes |

@OP You are a shocking and hateful bigot with a pathological hatred of the Yorubas that I personally feel stems from the inferiority complex you feel toward the Yoruba ethnic group. You have certainly been 'mauled' on this thread you started with the belief your ignorant opinion, indoctrinated into you in your villages and communities, will be upheld. I.e the ridiculously ignorant falsehood, borne of bad belle, that "the Yorubas contribute nothing to Nigeria" whereas the reality, for those who deal with facts and reality, is that the Yorubas are arguably the most important and productive ethnic group in Nigeria. Let me heap more misery on your ignorant mind. Do you know what Unesco `world heritage sites are? Do your research. I can only tell you that merely two exist in Nigeria. One is the Osun Osogbo sacred grove in Osun State and the other is the Sukur cultural landscape in Adamawa. The Osun Osogbo yearly festival is attended by thousands yearly from every corner of the universe because of how highly respected the rich Yoruba culture and ethnographic deepness is. I chose this example , when I can cite at least 100 positives the Yorubas contribute to Nigeria, because it shows that a land and people God has blessed cannot be cursed by a repellent hater like you. Have you done anything deliberate in your region, of world class beauty and cultural/aesthetic appeal, to merit inclusion in the Unesco world heritage site list? Do you even have a culture deep and diverse enough to deliver what the Yorubas have given Nigeria before you open your bigoted mouth to ask what the SW "offer"? Silly hater. What do you, your people and region "offer" to Nigeria? I keep saying it that the problem of the Yorubas is that we are secure in ourselves and probably least braggarts in a nation of many ethnic groups with some suffering from deep insecurities, inferiority complex and identity crisis. To that end, we see no reason to wake up daily and proclaim our real worth which makes us very pivotally important to Nigeria. This is why someone like you given to empty braggadocio, borne of inferiority complex, can start a silly thread like this which ignores the overwhelming facts and reality on the ground that shows any neutral and fair-minded person that the Yorubas are a huge blessing and asset to Nigeria. I really despise prejudiced people and you need to learn to start appreciating others instead of waking up daily and trying to deny them credit for what they are and what they contribute to society merely because you have a hateful mind you do not want to repair. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/ Nigeria 9 Likes |

ezeagu:The problem with your folk is you are inveterate liars. What does nsibidi have to do with Eboes. You are so greedy and covetous. Nsibidi is a system belonging to and originating among people in secret societies in what is now Cross River and Cameroon. It was a SECRET only o members and not in anyway an Eboe thing. With your nature and left to you you woud rewrite history. Shameless people. At any rate it was an indigenous system which is commendable but I was a primitive system of writing in rudimentary stages of development with limited utility but it was not an Eboe phenomenon Now read the write up you provided which is calculated to present a half-truth to the ignorant .Typical Eboe lying There was no Nsibidi dictionary. The First Eboe dictionary was produced by Samuel Ajayi Crowther 6 Likes |

mightyhaze: Typical delusion of grandeur. Newsflash: The only thing you all dominate at is the art of noisemaking, especially here on NL. . In spite of your delusion, SW internet penetration is far ahead of the SE's (http://thenet.ng/2014/03/lagos-ibadan-and-kano-among-most-active-african-cities-on-twitter/), so much so that Smile 4G network, a South Africa owned and Igbo-managed internet ISP chose to launch its operations in in West-Africa/Nigeria at Ibadan instead of Enugu or Onitsha -- https://www.nairaland.com/1288759/smile-launches-ibadan-new-4g (I wonder why? ). While we are busy building viable industries, educational institutions of repute, and increasing our economies of scale (in short making our region ever more competitive and robust relative to other places in Africa), you all are still migrating en-masses out of your region and would rather stick to trading in fake imports -- imagine if the govt choses to place an embargo on your imports (both land and sea) I wonder what will become of you all, considering that you all are landlocked and depend on other regional borders even in the extreme case of smuggling your goods into the country. Your seeming 'domination' the transport sector was born out of necessity as a result of your people's migrant/nomadic nature since you all migrate out of your region than any other group in the country and therefore have to transport your migrants to and from your region at all times -- which is a further testmament to the fact that there simply aren't enough opportunities in Igboland to accomodate y'all, hence the need to depend on other regions for economic survival. Na only for una mind una dey 'dominate' anything. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/rivers-state-others-have-overtaken-s-east-in-commerce-industry/ 7 Likes 1 Share |
