Osun tertiary institutions end five-month strike

…sign MoU with government

Tertiary institutions in Osun state have ended their five month old industrial strike action after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of the state.

Signing the MoU at the Governor Office in Osogbo, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola pledged that his administration will not relent in its efforts to make life meaningful for the people and the welfare of its workforce.

Government and Staffers of the institutions, during the MoU signing having recognised that the current financial challenge resulting from dwindling revenue from the Federation accounts will continue to affect the payment of salaries, pensions and critical expenditures of government, decided to put an end to the strike.

Governor Aregbesola speaking through his Chief-of-Staff, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, ‎told the staff of the tertiary institutions in the state that the government has no plan of merging or scrappin any of the state owned institutions.

The governor called for the cooperation of the workers in moving the state forward as it enters a new phase of looking inward at how to increase the finances of the state and depend less on the Federal allocation.‎

He expressed satisfaction over what he described as a high sense of maturity displayed by the leadership of the union, pledging that the government would do all it could to fulfil her side of the agreement.
‎According to the governor: “The issue of merger has never been raised by this government. Nobody is going to merge any of the schools. The speculation is only being peddled by people who want to fan embers of discord.

“I can assure you that nobody will be victimised, the governor himself is a comrade who is never vindictive. For him to have given his words that you will be paid some days after you resume work shows he is not vindictive.

“I want to use this opportunity to charge you to be committed to our Internally Generated Revenue and assist the government in blocking leakages. We should all face the reality of the situation we have in the country.There is a glut in the oil industry and we need to look inward.

“We need to really increase our internal revenue for us to be able to meet our obligations, government cannot do it alone, so this is the kind of support that we need from our institutions, as our financial situations improve every other part will be considered.”

Earlier, representatives of the union in all the four state owned tertiary institutions, namely; Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Osun State College of Technology, Esa-oke, Osun State Colleges of Education in Ila Orangun and Ilesa, the State Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council of the union,

Comrade Olusoji Fasipe commended Governor Aregbesola for his rare understanding and patience despite the condition attached to the industrial action.

He urged the government not to renege on its promises of paying them within the stipulated seven days of resumption, adding that the strike has been suspended in line with the agreement made with the government

He said the union was always on the side of government, assuring that the union would do all it could to support the administration in repositioning its economy as it is faced with financial challenges.

“We are ready to do our best to ensure that the state economy is revamped. We have friendly and fatherly people in government and they have been playing the role as expected and it is our belief that they would not relent in giving us more support.

“We suspend this strike based on the agreement reached with the government to pay our salaries within seven days of resumption. We are optimistic and we are returning to work because our governor emphatically promised to pay our salaries within seven days,” Comrade Fadipe said.

For those who do not know,this is the Official GDP of all southwest states.

GDP in the Southwestern Region of Nigeria
The Region contributes about 35% of the country’s GDP estimated at $180bn, out of which Lagos State contributes 72% at $129bn and other States sharing the remaining $51bn.

Ekiti ---------- N3.5bn
Lagos ------- N129bn
Ogun -------- N5.3bn
Ondo -------- N28.32bn
Osun -------- N3.54bn
Oyo --------- N8.85bn

Need to start paying close attention to ondo. Didn't know that her GDP is the second highest in SW.

Abuja is a ghost town. If Nigeria ceases to exist today, Abuja Wil be worst hit. No vibrant private sector at all.

For starters, in my opinion the completion and modernisation of the Lagos - Ibadan expressway should be prioritised. It remains the gateway to the rest of the SW. Why can't resources be pulled together by our leaders to finish this eyesore

Lagos-Ibadan road is a Federal road. I doubt if the states have what it takes to dabble into it right now. The FG will not even allow it especially that the project has been awarded already.

The Oyo state Governor Senator Abiola Ajimobi has reiterated the readiness of his administration to partner with South Africa in the areas of Agriculture, trade and Investment.
Governor Ajimobi stated this while receiving the South African consul-General Ambassador MOKGETHI SAM MONAISA and his team at the Governor office Agodi Ibadan.
The Governor who describe the State as a strategic location for investors explained that Oyo State is blessed with natural endowment such as arable land, large deposit of marble and granite which he said would attract Investors from South Africa.
He added that his administration is committed to structuring an agricultural relationship with South Africa which he said would add value to the agricultural production capability of the State.
He expressed readiness to leverage on the visit of the ambassador to establish a concrete relationship with South African investors.
Earlier in his remarks the South African consul-General Ambassador Sam Monaisa said the South African Government would be willing to partner with Oyo State in the areas of Education, Agriculture, Trade and Investment.
He pointed out that the existing relationship that has lingered over the years coupled with the economic advantages in Oyo State will compel South Africa to initiate a bilateral relationship with Oyo State Government.

How recent is this news please?

I have been disappointed in Ajimobi. I am more worried for Oyo state's immediate future prospects.

I think it was discussed but it seems this current administration is not interested in implementing the confab report.Another reason why i hate Nigerian politics

I think the constitution has to be changed in order to implement resource control, Which makes it quite complex.

I know it's a federal road but it is of such critical importance that it cannot be neglected......let the states approach the Feds and get a reimbursement afterwards - is my point.

His best is not enough.
He can do better I heard he did well in his first tenure.

Lagos and Ogun States are Giants.

We also have big guys Oyo and Ondo States(they can take care of themselves to certain extent).

Then we have Small Guys, the Osun and Ekiti States. These two states give me concern. We have solid minerals in these two states that we can invest into and earn cool money for the states.

As for the cocoa farming, the solution is rebirth. We need to uproot the old trees and plant new ones. The new hybrid plant yields about 2.5tonnes of cocoa beans in just 3years(actually it's 2.5years).

We need to make the two states work, things are not working in the two states and it saddens my heart that my Dear State(Osun State) is fast becoming an Almajiri State. Too bad for us in Osun State.

Things shall be better. We have low sulphur content gold deposit in huge quantity in my state, it's just that we haven't gotten a serious investor.

We shall get there, God help us.
