I would have gladly done the same if I were in his shoes. We are talking about 1999 or 2000 here? Yoruba films ke! Yoruba films were making peanuts and little or no room for growth, the Igbo film makers completely changed the game which gave room for stars like Jim Iyke, Geni and so on., kudos Desmond hopefully your political career will be meaningful and not just a showcase.

Desmond is saying yoruba has no place in nollywood.

Nollywood is a creation of Yoruba.

Television, film industry, home movies were all pioneered by Yoruba in Nigeria, before others joined..

And who is dragging Sola and Desmond with him? You just like to write for writing sake just to be noticed and for cheap LIKES you will get. It doesn't make sense, just because of LIKES some people will just throw away their sense and be senseless.

You removed fine name like Olusola from your name because of one stupid Nollywood movies and Igbo producers. Why is he so fake like many of us? But now that you want to join Politics and need the help of the people, you quickly remember Olusola.

Why would a sane person replace Olusola with Desmond? I'm proud to have a yoruba name "Oluwatosin" I will never substitute it for anything in this world, I'm proud of my culture and where I'm coming from. Why should I be ashamed of my name because of Igbo producers? Too bad!!!

Owu never catch you, that's why you're yarning like this. The man had to survive. Besides, his mother is Igbo. Nothing wrong with what he did.

These people should grow up.
He is a politician now so he still want to be heard.
His career as an actor will go down seriously.

LOL. The movie industry sector referred to as 'Nollywood' actually started out as an Igbo-speaking movie industry in the 80s with epic movies such as Ahanna, Nneka the Pretty Serpent etc. and then in the late 90s, the switch to the English movie industry was made and the movie industry has ever grown since then, merging with the Yoruba movie industry and also incorporating other minority movie industries such as the Ibibio/Efik and Bini/Ishan movie industries. The Yorubas did start acting theatrical plays and stage plays, however they did not give birth to what is known today as Nollywood. Nollywood started out as an Igbo-speaking movie industry. Please know your history.

I think I remember Segun Arinze saying one time that Arinze is not his real name but, just like Desmond Elliot, an Igbo name he had to adopt when he joined Nollywood. He was born in Onitsha to an Igbo mother and his maternal Igbo connection may have helped him in Nollywood. Omotola also has also mentioned being given an Igbo name when she joined Nollywood which movie producers used to call her Ugonma instead of her real name. Her husband is half Edo half Igbo, also having an Igbo mother.

Yeas, I’ve heard those things like producers telling people to change to Igbo names. I don’t think anybody will risk telling me that to my face because they know that I might talk. I might say we have talked about it because we joke about it. People say I look like an Igbo girl. They gave me names like Ugonma. Instead of calling me Omotola they call me Ugonma in the movies. I don’t have any problems with it because my husband is half Igbo. I don’t see it as a slight on my person but as a continuation of who I am. I understand also that people think I’m Igbo because when I went to the market in those days people used to speak Igbo to me.

Nwadiana, don't mind those asking why remove sola to answer Desmond, just to nick a role in nollywood, they are all indomie generation, still been fed by their parents, cos they are not hustlers and can't understand, explain from now to tomorrow, but what matters the end result was perfect and lucrative.

Olusola is Kevin's last name and as we all know last names are not that easily changed, first names are. I don't see that many options Kevin has to change his last name, Olusola. What I should be asking you is, why is he going by the name 'Kevin'? Why is he not going by his Yoruba native name 'Oluwole'?
