Dadehmola:It then begs the question, Under what circumstances do stats become relevant in assessing player(s) effectiveness? |

elampiro:while rooney developed into a jack of all trade, master of none. rooney is a street footballer.....no tactical nous or any football intelligence. he has the first touch of clifford orji. rooney is a liability.... then in your other comment, you were comparing rooney to shearer & henry. shearer scored 260PL goals, rooney would be 70 by the time he breaks shearer's record. |

StarBoard:Stats could be very very misleading... How many times would we see mediocre players like Cleverley & Mikel come up with impressive numbers, despite their abysmal performances?? Why do scouts & managers travel long distances to watch certain players that are of interest to them when they can as well monitor the stats from the comfort of their homes (the fact that they even prefer watching them live & not on TV buttresses the fact that "seeing is believing" .For me, I'd rather pay more attention to what I see. I might then consider some basic numerical parameters but trust me, the former is more important to me. |

StarBoard:Because Judging by stats alone, the likes of James Beatie, Andy Johnson, Darren Bent and Kevin Phillips would lay claims to being world class strikers at a point in their career. |

coogar:no matter the clauses of any contract signed in the world, i believe both parties can terminate it. its just a question of aggregating every every into monetary decimals & everyone goes home happy. the same was done for Anderson i think. yeah i know it is not feasible in Rooney's case cuz he's national captain & whatnot - its tantamount to disgrace of some sort, but i think both representatives should hit the negotiating deck again; review the terms vis-a-vis his output, don't touch his almighty wages he can keep it. Rooney himself should grow some conscience & ask for a gaddamn break! |

Dadehmola:This is my interpretation. Since the game took a foothold of some sorts in the US via MLS I think the game got hooked on stats. If you follow North American sports you would know what I'm saying. The NBA NFL NHL are stat driven. The audience to those sports yearn for stats and devour them religiously. To make the game "viewable"(for lack of a better description) over there football/soccer had to incorporate the stat thing that has somehow found its way into mainstream/European journalism. Assist hardly came up as a measure for evaluating strikers for example; but these days it is the tie breaker in competitions for the golden boot. But we've gotten to the stage where every pundit has adopted stats in his repertoire and you and I are being left behind in trying to view the game the good old fashioned way we know it. I tend to agree with your position, I'm just thinking that it's a kind of way that the game has evolved into-stat driven. |

coogar:Zero over Zero. As for the record. It doesn't matter when Rooney breaks shearer's record. Or whether he even breaks it. What the stats says is that Rooney at 30 did what others could not do at that age. Goals and assists. |

elampiro:he started when others didn't start - so what's the big deal? shearer was already 22 before the premier league started. rooney had a good 6 years head start. thierry henry was also already 22 when he joined the premier league. henry & shearer had already scored 23 league goals each in before they started scoring in the premier league. so what's the big deal in rooney's dodgy records? so rooney shouldn't be expected to score more premier league goals than two players who played only 8 seasons in the competition before they were 30? are you actually aware rooney is now in his 14th season & he's not even 30 yet? ![]() elampawa.......see how easy it is for me to tear rooney's appalling records into shreds. only elampiro would compare goals scored in 14 seasons by rooney to the ones scored in only 8 seasons by henry/shearer. you ought to admit it - rooney is a massive liability and his goalscoring record is a fraud! |

If Rooney has any sense, he'd hang up his boots now while people still celebrate him for wat he's achieved for club and country. His poor displays of recent ll only draw more criticism coz a lot of football fans ve short memories. https://giant.gfycat.com/CleverNewHarvestmouse.gif Remembering Rooney at his best |

elampiro:simple analysis destroyed your rooney image. shearer & henry scored more league goals before age 30 than rooney did. there was a football league before the PL started in 92/93 & shearer had 23 league goals then. henry had already scored 23 league goals as well before arriving in england. add it to the tally on your image & it's clear that rooney's stat is a fraud. he's shytë & he will never be a world class player that the british media want him to desperately become. |

I just couldn't help but notice the cult-like action I am seeing here whereby there is gang up against some people while whatever some people says is regarded as the gospel truth. I am very sure that if coogar wakes up tomorrow and proclaim rooney as the best, 90% of the people here will change their mind and agree with him. While almost everyone sees whatever elampiro says as opata and are so eager to Insult him. Maybe it's because coogar has a toxic tongue. Imagine those those guys insulting elampiro over his observation on wednesday match even when he was quoting respectable sport site, yet people are still falling in line to support those guys. SMH |

n0m0705:No one is ganging up on any1, even Coogar gets his own share of e-bashing when he says his version of opata. Just that Elamps has been known to say his more blatantly and frequently. Its usually all done in jest anyway, i doubt if no body agrees with Elampiro at all sometimes, we just want him to see our points too. |

Coogar, use these values to judge. Henry 284 in 581 games, even he played in a shitty MLS league, Rooney 236 in 492 , zlatan 270 in 459, Alan Shearer 283 in 559 yet Rooney is labeled a fraud. Please do the conversions. Rooney is the only member of the mentioned names who played less as the arrow head of the team's attack. How is Rooney a fraud. |
| Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by nyabinghi(m): 6:38am On Oct 24, 2015 |
shearer scored 30 in 63 for England, Rooney scored 50 in 107, how is Shearer's return better, if Rooney had played as a centre forward all his years, he would have been United all time scorer since. |
| Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by nyabinghi(m): 6:40am On Oct 24, 2015 |
Rooney has declined every one knows that but to label him a fraud, is a fraud itself. He has scored 6 goals for United this season even in his shitty state. Depay should be carrying the team since Rooney has been faltering but Depay has defrauded United with this shitty displays. |
| Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by parrotibaba(m): 8:29am On Oct 24, 2015 |
Everybody including elamps himself knows that Rooney has been more sh!t than sh!t itself. So all this arguments r useless. We should focus on better things like our match on Sunday n how we should approach the game. I think with the right setup we should be able to win this game cos city is weak without Aguero and Silva. Against Sevilla they struggled badly so if we can mark out Debruyne then we will nullify their attacking threat. I expect a win for us. |
| Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by chrisley024(m): 8:29am On Oct 24, 2015 |
nyabinghi:And why do you think this team should depend on Depay? I think it falls on Mata and Rooney to be carrying this team. |
| Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by chrisley024(m): 8:38am On Oct 24, 2015 |
parrotibaba:Yeah, their CF Gameiro lost them the match with his consistent missing of chances. City played mainly from the flanks so if our fullbacks can sit up with our wide players tracking back, we would nullify their attack and win if our attack play quick, direct and convert their chances. |

nyabinghi:i cannot use those values to judge. they are misleading. until you show me the number of minutes played, the number of games played is useless. i have already showed you guys giggs played more games than lampard but lampard played more minutes than giggs. only amateurs use goals/games ratio to analyse players. i could play 5 games but spent only 20 mins on the pitch, you could play one game & spend 90 mins on the pitch. nyabinghi: rooney has a very good goals record for a player who has played behind ruud, saha, chicharito how many trophies did shearer lift for club and countryrooney doesn't have a good goals record & the positions he's played have nothing to do with his mediocre goalscoring ability. we have seen mata & martial score several goals in the PL this season without playing up top. is ronaldo a centre forward? has messi consistently played as a centre forward? where have you ever seen them make excuses that their withdrawn position is the reason they don't score plenty of goals? a mediocre player is a mediocre player, abeg! nyabinghi:give us the number of minutes shearer played. the number of games is misleading. nyabinghi:rooney is a fraud! and gimme a minute to expose this fraud this morning.....take your time & follow rooney's program of mediocrity aided by his country's media houses. •plays as a #9 for 5 matches without contributing anything. media: "we think his best position is no.10". •plays 5 matches as a #10 without contributing. media: "we would like to see him get a run of games as a #9." •plays another 4 matches as a #9 before he finally scores. media: "rooney proves his critics wrong. this shows he's still a world class player." •next 2 matches he's back to his usual piss-poor "retirement-worthy" level. media: "rooney has lost a bit of pace, but he can still deliver those fantastic passes in a midfield role." •rooney ends up being our worst player after a few games in midfield. media: "rooney is constantly being played out of position." •rooney goes on a long drought without scoring. he ran at a pace of 0.25mph but he works his socks off! media: "no matter where you play him, he will still work his socks off. he's still essential to the team." •rooney is back in a striker role, but he still continues to underperform week in week out. media: "rooney gets no service. on top of that, we need more english players around him as he can't understand those foreign players." rinse & repeat!!!! _________________________ |

StarBoard:No doubt about this... The crux of the matter is the loop-sided nature /unreliability of Stats-driven punditry. Yeah, some Stats might tally with certain obvious facts/qualities of certain players. However, the inconsistencies associated with those stats during multiple comparisons have... & would always be an issue. We have seen instances whereby a "top player" X is adjudged to be better than another "top player Y" by certain parameters, only for us to realize that one rookie Z is actually better than both players (judging by these same parameters)...making mockery of whatever debate going on. For me, the round-leather game is too complex for stats to serve as a major tool when evaluating a player's qualities & performances. A Neural Network with different parameters (in their hundreds or thousands) may work better in players statistical analysis but for me, I'd rely more on what I see with my two korokoro eyes. darefestus:...and lampard shíts on zidane everyday of the week. |

Rooney is going thru a sort of "footballing menopause"! He's currently the most uninspiring captain in world football! Its a travesty that he keeps getting games! Great player? Yes! Legend? Yes, but NOT CURRENTLY! Quote me anywhere! #dropwazza! |
